Be Gentle, My Master
Chapter 1153
Tang Jixin nodded repeatedly to the Old Madam’s words, not daring to utter a single word of disobedience.
Her gaze, however, still occasionally drifted toward Baili Xia, as if she was constantly on guard, fearing that she might harm her son.
Baili Xia couldn’t quite describe her feelings towards the people of this family.
She only knew that once you enter a wealthy family, it’s as deep as the ocean; seeing Tang Jixin’s state, she always felt a sense of powerlessness.
Finally, the Old Madam noticed a strange face in the crowd.
“Who might this be…” she narrowed her eyes, though already seventy years of age, her gaze was still sharp.
“She is my cousin and also my student,” Nangong Xu stepped out from behind her.
Walking to Baili Xia’s side, he held her hand and led her back to the Old Madam: “Xiaxia, hurry and pay your respects to the Old Madam.”
“Hello Old Madam, my name is Baili Xia, everyone calls me Xiaxia,” Baili Xia hurriedly said in a gentle voice.
It was evident that the Old Madam held an extremely high status here; at least, everyone in the room was very deferential towards her.
Even though Bei Tianyou did not bow and scrape before his grandmother like the others, he was certainly very respectful.
But who knew, in the Bei Family, did the Old Madam have more power, or was it the old master who was more powerful?
Hearing that she was Nangong Xu’s cousin, the Old Madam’s mood seemed to lighten considerably, her eyes softening with pleasure as she looked at Baili Xia.
Evaluating Baili Xia, she nodded repeatedly: “The young girl is really quite pretty, and clean.”
That makeup-free face was fresh and clean, transparent and pure, just the kind the elderly most admire.
Compared to those who paint their faces with all sorts of colors, the Old Madam preferred Baili Xia’s naturally beautiful features.
Their Bei Family had been making medicine for generations, and had deep research into all kinds of medicines, even including cosmetics.
The Old Madam could tell at a glance whether Baili Xia had used cosmetics or not.
“Girl, come here and let Grandma have a good look at you,” the Old Madam said with a smile.
The surrounding people all gasped; they had never seen the Old Madam so amiable and gentle with a stranger before.
Baili Xia also felt a little flustered, the Old Madam had just been raging, but now she was speaking to her so kindly.
The sudden change in attitude really left people caught off guard.
Especially since Tang Jixin, who had been scolded just moments ago, still stood off to the side with her head lowered.
But how could she not go over when the Old Madam asked her to?
Even though she felt doubtful, she obediently walked over.
The Old Madam took her small hand and gently kneaded it in her palm.
Having drawn closer, she thoroughly scrutinized Baili Xia’s features and in an instant, something flickered in her heart.
But, it passed too swiftly, she hadn’t even savored what it was before it was gone.
Holding Baili Xia’s hand, she found herself somewhat reluctant to let go.
Baili Xia felt uncomfortable under her gaze, and even those standing nearby exchanged puzzled looks.
What was the Old Madam doing, holding onto the young girl’s hand without letting go, and her gaze upon the girl seemed to hide many things.
Finally, because of looking at Baili Xia, even a thin mist began to well up in her eyes.
“Grandma…” Bei Tianyou approached and gently clasped both of their hands.
It was only then that the Old Madam seemed to snap back to reality, releasing Baili Xia.
Looking at Baili Xia again, her eyes had started to redden slightly.
“Resemblance, such a remarkable resemblance…” she murmured softly, her heart sour and bitter.
Truly very much like her beloved youngest daughter.
But Qingyou was long gone from this world; however much alike, it was just her yearning for her daughter!
