The banquet hall in the front courtyard was ablaze with lights, filled with wine and laughter, music and dancing.

It was said that a very important guest would be arriving tonight.

Normally, the girls were especially excited about things like this.

But Baili Xia didn’t feel any excitement at all.

Because tonight, she had something extremely important to do.

As for who would show up at the banquet, she couldn’t care less.

As night fell, Bei Tianyou instructed the servants to prepare a simple dinner for them.

Although the banquet would certainly be filled with gourmet food, for these wealthy ladies, such events were meant for showcasing their charms.

Eating wasn’t entirely out of the question, but it definitely hurt their image.

There were still some girls who lingered around the food section, but generally, they’d only eat a bite or two to save face.

Baili Xia didn’t care about these things; she could eat freely at the banquet.

But she wouldn’t be staying long at tonight’s event, so she had to make sure to eat her fill beforehand.

After all, eating well meant she’d have the energy to do other things later at night.

Mu Xiaoyao remained silent, focusing solely on his meal.

After the whole “heatstroke” incident, someone who didn’t like talking much to begin with had become even more reserved.

Nangong Xu had spent the entire afternoon over in the main house, staying by Lord Bei’s side.

This trip was initially meant for treating Bei Tianyou, but unexpectedly, it turned him into the Bei Family’s personal physician.

The Old Madam adored him to no end, and now even Lord Bei was relying on him.

It seemed studying medicine was truly wise—good at medical skills, good-looking, with a killer figure—one was well-received anywhere.

If only he could be a bit more adaptable, countless opportunities lay before him.

But unfortunately, for Nangong Xu, perhaps having a medical room and remaining by Mu Xiaojiu’s side was the best future he could envision for himself.

When he returned, Mu Xiaoyao and Baili Xia were just finishing their meal.

Seeing him come in, Baili Xia promptly served him a bowl of rice and even prepared the chopsticks.

This was the sitting room in the western wing.

After Nangong Xu washed his hands and came back, he sat down at the table and began eating on his own.

From the looks of it, he seemed a bit tired.

“How is Lord Bei doing?” Baili Xia had been waiting for him to return.

Only when he had eaten most of his meal did she speak up.

“Does he have any major health issues? Is it serious?”

As soon as they heard that the Ghost Doctor, Mr.

Nangong, was here, Lord Bei immediately had someone summon him to the main house, as if there was some urgent matter.

In her heart, Baili Xia felt a bit worried.

For some unexplainable reason, this bond of closeness made her oddly protective.

“His heart isn’t great; it’s an old issue, a condition of the wealthy.” Nangong Xu didn’t go into detail.

However, conditions like this were actually very common among the elderly.

“Probably because he’s been experimenting on developing medications.

Over the years, the excessive use of medicines has built up toxins in his body.”

“Has his health always been poor?

Otherwise, why would he resort to overmedication?”

“He probably didn’t have any major issues in the past.

Honestly, it’s like you girls, always taking tonics and beauty-enhancing supplements out of habit.”

Nangong Xu set down his chopsticks, took the soup bowl, and sipped a couple of mouthfuls before continuing, “Medicine always has side effects.

Don’t be fooled into thinking beauty pills or anti-aging tonics are completely harmless.”

“Good thing I’m naturally gorgeous and don’t rely on that stuff,” Baili Xia said with a smile.

In reality, she was feeling a little nervous tonight.

Whenever she started talking too much, it was clear she was trying to mask her unease.

Was this girl going to take action tonight?

Nangong Xu’s gaze shifted toward Mu Xiaoyao.

Mu Xiaoyao didn’t say anything, just nodded slightly.

But Nangong Xu reminded him, “She’ll need to attend the banquet tonight.”
