Be Gentle, My Master
Chapter 2378
Bei Fengjin never imagined that this one decision of his would later separate the two of them by life and death.
Back then You’er had been so anxious, wanting to leave with him—was it because she had already discovered she was pregnant?
Only now does Bei Fengjin realize just how much he missed out on back then.
He had only not wanted her to suffer with him; if he could persuade the Old Madam, then You’er wouldn’t have needed to choose between family and love.
He hadn’t known that even at that time, You’er was already trapped in that dilemma.
His You’er—just how much had she borne all alone…
Baili Xia’s gentle gaze rested on Bei Fengjin, seeing that he kept silent.
It seemed her words just now had stirred something in his heart.
She spoke again, lightly, “Dad, you’ve hidden yourself in the Bei Family for so long, and you’ve done quite a lot for them. That’s enough to repay the Old Madam for raising you.”
“You can’t go on like this anymore. Living this way is letting Mom down.”
Bei Fengjin’s gaze jerked up and landed on Baili Xia’s face.
He couldn’t understand—how was he letting You’er down?
Baili Xia saw that he was stirred by her words.
She went on, “How much do you know about what happened after Mom left?”
Bei Fengjin’s eyes unconsciously dimmed. He didn’t know.
He knew very little of what came after.
He only knew that You’er married Baili Sheng and left with him, and when she came back, it was already as bad news.
Baili Xia said, “Mom gave birth to me. That proves she never betrayed you. You were always in her heart.”
“But you don’t even know what she went through afterward, or how she died.”
“You shut yourself up in Jin Ye Pavilion, shut yourself away all these years, muddling through life in despair. Like this, can you say you’re worthy of her?”
Bei Fengjin’s body suddenly trembled, his gaze quivering slightly.
“Xiaxia…”
He called her softly.
Every word Baili Xia said was like a stone smashing into his heart, his chest so tight he could hardly breathe.
Why, all these years, had he never thought to investigate?
Just because the news of You’er’s death had hit him too hard and made him completely give up?
He only dared to secretly go to her Tomb of Clothes and Hat, or up Hongxia Mountain, to silently remember her.
“Dad, come with me and find out the truth about what happened back then, okay?”
More importantly, she hoped her father could let himself go, and in the future, stop sinking in despair.
She didn’t want to see him like this again, dazed and lost for another ten-plus years.
Wu Ming had been listening from the side the whole time.
At this point he couldn’t help but speak up. “For your woman, you should put down your pride and do anything for her, no matter what.”
“If you really love her, then go and get to the bottom of all of this.”
“Clear her name, and ease your own heart.”
Bei Fengjin’s gaze fell on Wu Ming, turning over his words in his mind.
Clear You’er’s name…
His gaze shifted back to Baili Xia, and his eyes returned to their usual indifference.
But Baili Xia could feel that the aura around him was different from before.
“I’ll go to the birthday banquet.”
In that faint voice was an unmistakable firmness. Baili Xia knew her father had made up his mind.
He would go with her to uncover the truth of the past.
Baili Xia nodded hard, reached out, and wrapped Bei Fengjin’s large hand in her own.
She lifted her eyes to him, thinking how much it must have hurt his heart when he and her mother were forcibly torn apart back then.
“Dad, what exactly happened back then? Why did Mom leave?”
Bei Fengjin’s fingertips twitched slightly. He had never been able to understand the reason You’er left back then.
Now that he’d met Baili Xia, he finally understood.
“She did it to protect us.”
