Be Gentle, My Master
Chapter 2409
Bei Fengjin didn’t seem to take Bei Qingyue’s probing questions much to heart.
He only said indifferently, “Friends. These two little ones like to come play chess with me and chat a bit.”
Friends? This “friendship” really did come right on cue.
A man who’s lived in seclusion for over a decade—what kind of friends could he possibly be with these two?
Looking at Baili Xia, a trace of disdain flashed through Bei Qingyue’s eyes.
“Feng Jin, since you put it that way, I might as well make my purpose clear.”
“I just want to verify one thing: when did this girl and her people get here?”
Her gaze swept over Wu Ming, who was sitting to the side calmly drinking tea.
She hadn’t wanted to speak to Feng Jin with this kind of attitude, but these two really were an eyesore to her.
Bei Fengjin lifted his cup, then replied, “They’ve been here all night.”
Bei Qingyue was blocked so thoroughly she was left speechless. With Bei Fengjin standing as a witness, they really couldn’t keep accusing Baili Xia of anything.
Instead, she grew more and more suspicious of what exactly the relationship between these two was.
In the middle of the night, the pair ran all the way to Jin Ye Pavilion—was it really just to talk and drink tea?
What was even stranger was that the Fifth Brother she had cautiously curried favor with for years had never been willing to say even half a sentence more to her.
Yet tonight, for the sake of this little girl, he had actually said so much to her.
Was this little girl really that important to him?
Bei Qingyue’s willow-leaf brows knitted slightly as she sized up Baili Xia, who sat there with an unchanged expression. To her surprise, there was a faint trace of jealousy in her heart.
But whatever the case, there were some things she still had to question face to face.
Carrying a hint of displeasure, her gaze swept over Baili Xia and Wu Ming once more. Bei Qingyue’s tone was still sour.
“If I remember correctly, Miss Baili came to the Bei Family with your Brother.”
“I don’t know where Mr. Mu Xiaoyao has gone. Why didn’t he come over with you tonight?”
Baili Xia’s heart gave a fierce jolt. Had she figured out that person was her Brother?
But then a calming look from the side shot over, settling her heart back down.
As long as she hadn’t produced any concrete evidence, Baili Xia must not show the slightest crack.
She lifted her head to meet Bei Qingyue’s gaze, curled her lips into a smile, her face completely unruffled.
“My Brother only came to Bei Miao with me because it was on the way, that’s all.”
“He came back this afternoon just to drop something off for me, then he left to handle some business at one of the Mu Group’s branch offices. Does Lady Yue have something she needs from him?”
Even though she knew full well that asking about Mu Xiaoyao’s whereabouts meant she suspected he had something to do with that black-clad man tonight,
Baili Xia was not stupid enough to dig a pit for herself and jump in.
The chill in Bei Qingyue’s eyes flickered and vanished. “Nothing in particular. I just didn’t see him, so I asked in passing.”
When she turned back to Bei Fengjin, the smile on her face had already returned to its usual form.
“Since that’s the case, I’ll take my leave first. Time is tight, I still need to check a few other places. I won’t disturb you any longer.”
With that, Bei Qingyue gave them a slight nod, then turned and strode toward the main doors first.
Seeing her leave, not only Nangong Qingqing, but also the dozen-odd subordinates behind them, quickly followed.
“Mother, are we really just letting it go like this?” Nangong Qingqing quickened her pace to come up beside Bei Qingyue, unable to help asking.
Even with Bei Fengjin testifying, that still couldn’t prove they had in fact stayed in Jin Ye Pavilion the whole time.
No one knew whether the few of them had colluded beforehand.
For Mother to just walk away like this was far too out of step with her usual way of doing things.
Bei Qingyue’s face darkened. “Your Uncle Fengjin has already spoken that far. What more is there for you to doubt?”
