Bei Xier likely anticipated this, so she came early to help organize the servants’ work.

“Ping’er, go tell him to hang that lantern higher.”

“Hey, don’t place the table here, it’s blocking the way.”

“…”

In the courtyard, Bei Xier’s presence was practically everywhere.

The Old Madam and the Old Master were sitting on the sofa in the hall, watching the busy girl outside through the hall doors, finally finding a bit of solace in their hearts.

Unexpectedly, after aging, it wasn’t until now that they had such an obedient and sensible granddaughter.

Among all the children in the Bei Family, let’s not even mention the boys, each of them busy with their external affairs.

Yet most of the girls are spoiled and capricious, not willing to help out the family in any way.

“Old man, what do you think? I said this girl is good, didn’t I?”

The joy in the Old Madam’s words was easy to hear.

The Old Master nodded and reached out to hold the Old Madam’s hand in his palm, something in his gaze gently trembling.

“She’s just like You’er, isn’t she?”

The Old Madam’s hand suddenly trembled, her gaze fell on the Old Master’s face, a hint of reproach in her eyes.

“Why bring her up again? We agreed not to mention her anymore.”

The Old Master did not respond, his thoughts seemed to be drawn away.

“How great it would be if You’er were still here. You’er was also so obedient, so sensible.”

The past was stirred up, evoking emotions, and an indescribable mist covered the elderly man’s eyes.

The Old Madam beside him didn’t know how to comfort him.

After a while, when the Old Master’s emotions had slightly steadied,

she softly said, “You’er has been gone for so long, why can’t you let go?”

The Old Master looked at her, his eyes slightly reproaching.

“How could I let go? She was supposed to be my proudest daughter, but because of worldly conventions, we were separated by life and death.”

“Look at our two children now, what have they become?”

Perhaps because his emotions were ignited, for the first time he brought up past events in front of the Old Madam.

The Old Madam’s expression changed slightly, events not mentioned for years, yet today the Old Master chose to bring them up.

But whether the actions of the past were right or wrong, she still couldn’t judge them.

Even though a loving couple was torn apart, at least the reputation of the Bei Family was preserved.

The Old Madam gently exhaled, her gentle gaze fixed on the Old Master as she softly said, “Why bring these things up after so many years?”

“Although Feng Jin has become reclusive and keeps to himself, he always contributes to the Bei family’s medicine business.”

The Old Master shook his head, saying no more.

What he wanted wasn’t just a child who could only benefit the business.

Children should have a life of their own.

And evidently, the lives of Bei Qingyou and Bei Fengjin were ruined.

The two elders had always differed in opinions on this matter, with the Old Madam being traditional and more concerned about the Bei family’s reputation.

Whereas the Old Master regarded those as external things.

As long as everyone lived happily, that was enough.

After Bei Xier finished directing the courtyard servants, she stepped lightly into the hall.

“Grandfather, Grandmother.”

She walked over to the elders with a radiant smile, but upon noticing their seemingly odd expressions, she felt a bit uneasy.

She asked, “What’s the matter with you two?”

The Old Madam replied blandly, “Nothing, just reminiscing about some past events.”

“Xier, your second uncle’s family will arrive soon. Go and greet them when they come.”

Seeing her grandmother unwilling to elaborate, Bei Xier didn’t press further.

“Alright.”
