Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Chapter 60: FORGE Wanted the Trait. I Ate It Instead.

  • Next Chapter

Predation appeared.

«"Trait assimilation initiated."

"Toxin Adaptation"

Compatibility: 82%

Host hepatic structure modification in progress.

Blood filtration adaptation in progress.

Existing foreign toxin detected.

Trait calibration opportunity identified.»

Raven straightened slightly.

That was new.

The venom still circulating through his body was being used as a reference.

His pulse increased.

The numbness around the bite briefly worsened instead of disappearing.

Roland noticed.

"Your hand."

Raven looked down.

Two fingers were trembling.

Predatory Regeneration and the new Trait were reacting at the same time.

«Calibration exposure: Glassfang neurotoxin

Exposure severity: LOW

Adaptation response initiated.

Estimated resistance improvement against related compounds: MINOR»

Raven flexed his fingers.

Sensation returned faster.

Interesting.

Valeria was still watching him.

"Did it work?"

"It’s working."

"That didn’t look comfortable."

"It didn’t need to be."

"You always say things like that right up until your own body tries to kill you."

"So far, it hasn’t won."

"An impressive statistic considering we haven’t even known each other for two weeks."

The heat gradually faded.

Finally, another notification appeared.

«"Trait acquired: Toxin Adaptation"

Type: Passive / Adaptive

Current Grade: LOW

Effects:

— Increased resistance to common biological toxins

— Accelerated toxin filtration

— Improved survival against low-dose neurotoxins and hemotoxins

— Survived toxin exposure may produce limited future adaptation

WARNING

Resistance is not immunity.

High toxin concentrations may overwhelm adaptation.

Unknown toxins may remain lethal.

Certain magical, spiritual, and corrosive agents are unaffected.»

Raven read the warning carefully.

That was the important part.

Resistance didn’t mean immunity.

A bulletproof vest didn’t make someone immune to bullets.

Toxin Adaptation worked on the same principle.

Better odds.

Nothing more.

Raven closed the interface.

"Done."

Roland watched him.

"That’s it?"

"Were you expecting horns?"

"With the things you do, I don’t know what to expect anymore."

Valeria tilted her head slightly.

"What exactly did you get?"

Raven explained it as simply as possible.

"My body will process biological toxins faster. Exposure I survive can improve my resistance to similar compounds."

Roland looked genuinely impressed.

"That’s absurdly useful here."

"Yes."

Valeria focused on a different part.

"’Exposure you survive.’"

"Correct."

"So poison can still kill you."

"Yes."

"I wanted to make sure you remembered that part."

Raven cleaned the knife.

"I just read it."

"I don’t have much faith in your relationship with warnings."

"I read them."

"And then you do exactly what they warn you against."

"Only when the benefit outweighs the risk."

Roland muttered:

"That explains far too much."

Raven ignored him and opened FORGE again.

The HARVEST option was gone.

The Glassfang corpse still contained useful materials, but the specific gland had been committed to Predation.

«"Trait source consumed."

"Toxin Adaptation" unavailable for FORGE from this specimen.

Remaining viable materials:

Transparent Dermis — 74%

Venom Compression Sac — 86%

Thermal Nodes — 63%»

There it was.

The cost.

Real.

Irreversible.

Raven couldn’t change his mind now.

He had chosen to strengthen himself instead of preserving that possibility for a future object.

And that was fine.

FORGE didn’t exist to replace Predation.

It existed beside it.

That distinction mattered.

"Regret it?" Valeria asked.

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"I can find another Glassfang."

Roland slowly looked around the forest.

"Don’t say that here."

Raven raised his head.

On a branch almost fifty feet away stood a transparent figure.

Small.

Watching them.

Raven pointed.

"There’s another one."

Roland looked.

"I hate you a little."

"Valeria said the same thing."

"You’re forming bonds," she said.

Raven stood.

"That sounds more dangerous than the venom."

They didn’t kill the second Glassfang.

It retreated before they could approach and vanished between the leaves.

Raven let it go.

He already had what he needed.

That decision seemed to surprise Roland more than watching Raven eat part of the first one.

They continued following the wasps’ route.

For the next half hour, Raven paid attention to his body.

Toxin Adaptation produced no obvious physical improvement.

It didn’t increase his strength.

Didn’t give him a new sense.

Didn’t cause any visible changes.

Good.

He had no intention of becoming a collection of random mutations simply because the system classified them as useful.

Internally, however, something had changed.

Subtle.

The headache that had started after the bite disappeared.

The numbness vanished completely, and Predatory Regeneration stopped consuming a noticeable amount of energy fighting the venom, though the hunger remained.

The Trait had already reduced one of the costs of surviving Sablewood.

It had been worth it.

Valeria eventually began walking a little closer.

"I’m still thinking about the choice."

Raven looked at her.

"That sounds dangerous."

"FORGE or Predation."

"What about them?"

"If you find something unique, you may only get one chance. A Bloodline. A rare Skill. Something that could make you much stronger or become an exceptional weapon."

"Yes."

"And you’ll have to destroy one possibility to preserve the other."

Raven considered it.

"Probably."

"Doesn’t that bother you?"

"No."

Valeria looked at him.

Raven continued before she could complain about the answer.

"Limitations make decisions matter. If I could eat every Trait and then copy it into all my weapons, I wouldn’t need judgment. Just corpses."

Valeria remained silent for several seconds.

"Most people would prefer unlimited power."

"Most people have never seen what happens when a system removes consequences for people with authority."

Valeria’s expression shifted slightly.

Earth.

His government.

Black Hound.

Raven didn’t elaborate.

She didn’t ask.

"If something improves my odds of survival enough, I eat it," Raven continued. "If it’s worth more outside my body, I preserve it. If both options are good, I decide which one I need more."

"Cold."

"Efficient."

"They aren’t opposites."

Raven gave her a brief look.

"You’re learning."

"Careful. That almost sounded like a compliment."

"Don’t ruin it."

They went another hundred yards before Roland stopped so abruptly Raven nearly walked into him.

This time, the reason was obvious.

A tree ahead of them was covered in bodies.

Not human.

Animals.

Dozens.

Small mammals, lizards, insects, and two creatures Raven didn’t recognize were stuck to the trunk by a dark resin-like substance.

Some were still alive.

One twitched.

A black figure landed against the bark.

Arc Needle Wasp.

Large.

Much larger than the juvenile.

Maybe sixteen inches.

Blue lines pulsed through its abdomen.

Another landed above it.

Then a third.

Raven remained motionless.

FORGE reacted.

«"Arc Needle Wasp detected."

Specimen 1: Level 12 — Mature Worker

Specimen 2: Level 13 — Mature Worker

Specimen 3: Level 11 — Mature Worker

"Impulse Spark" density: HIGHER than previous specimen.

Prototype Rifle component viability: POTENTIAL»

Raven’s attention sharpened.

Finally.

"They’re adults," Valeria whispered.

"Yes."

Roland pointed very slowly toward the tree.

"That’s not the nest."

Raven looked at him.

"What is it?"

"Pantry."

One of the paralyzed animals twitched again.

A wasp placed its mandibles against the creature and tore away a strip of flesh while it was still alive.

Valeria’s expression tightened slightly.

"Charming."

Raven studied the workers.

Three adults.

Manageable.

Probably.

Then he saw movement behind the tree.

Another black silhouette.

Then another.

Five.

Seven.

Ten.

They moved in and out of the vegetation along a constant route.

Raven followed the direction.

East.

Deeper into Sablewood.

"If that’s only a feeding site," Roland whispered, "the colony is close."

Raven counted.

Twelve workers in less than thirty seconds.

The rifle needed one intact organ.

Only one.

He could attack here, isolate a worker, and leave.

That was the sensible option.

Predator’s Instinct produced faint pressure as several wasps shifted their posture.

Not hostile yet.

But alert.

Raven slowly backed away.

Valeria followed.

So did Roland.

They didn’t stop retreating until the tree vanished behind the vegetation.

Only then did Roland breathe normally again.

"I thought you were going to attack."

"Too many."

Valeria looked impressed.

"Two reasonable decisions in one day. Maybe Toxin Adaptation really did alter your personality."

"I’ll ask Predation to remove it."

She smiled.

Raven pulled out the map.

The mature workers were here.

That meant he’d found what he needed.

With the right position, bait, and a plan for extracting the organ, they could separate one the next day without alerting the entire colony.

Simple.

Raven had learned to distrust that word.

FORGE displayed the project.

«"PROJECT: PROTOTYPE RIFLE"

Completion: 0.8%

Functional Components Acquired: 0 / 5

Nearby compatible source detected:

Mature Arc Needle Wasp — "Impulse Spark"

Estimated component compatibility: UNKNOWN pending harvest»

Raven closed the interface.

He had already made one choice that day.

The Glassfang’s ability had ended up inside him.

The next useful ability wouldn’t.

Predation existed to keep Raven alive.

FORGE was supposed to make survival stop depending on letting monsters get close enough to bite him.

He looked toward the feeding ground, now hidden behind the trees.

Tomorrow, he’d find out whether the rifle was really worth deliberately giving up a Trait.

And for the first time since FORGE had awakened, Raven understood exactly what the Authority was going to demand from him.

Not materials.

Decisions.
