Chapter 415: Chapter 211: Descent of a Celestial God

The clear, happy giggles of a baby girl rang throughout the quiet stockade.

The villagers in the stockade snapped out of their shock.

"Xiangcai... My daughter..." Li Chunlei tossed aside his long spear and rushed to the watchtower, pulling his wife and daughter into a tight embrace.

He was a decisive and resolute man, but now his voice was choked with emotion as fat tears streamed unbidden from his eyes.

His wife and daughter had come within a hair’s breadth of being devoured by the vicious Gray Wolf Demon. How could he not be overwhelmed?

"My husband, am I still alive?" Xiangcai asked, her eyes dazed.

"Yes, alive. You’re alive and well," Li Chunlei chuckled, a goofy grin on his face.

"The Purple-clothed Guard! It was a Purple-clothed Guard from the Demon Suppression Department who slew the Wolf Demon!" someone shouted excitedly.

Only then did all the villagers turn to look at the stockade wall.

There, standing tall atop the wall, was a young man in purple robes.

He had refined features and a cool, stern expression. It was none other than Chen Cheng, who had just rushed over from Chen Family Gully.

"Greetings, Sir Purple-clothed Guard!"

...

One after another, the villagers fell to their knees and kowtowed.

If this Purple-clothed Guard hadn’t intervened, more than half of the villagers in Li Family Village would have likely perished.

"There is no need for such ceremony!" Chen Cheng said, waving his hand, his voice clear and resonant.

His gaze swept over the crowd before landing on Chen An and his two sons.

Chen An’s face was weathered by time, but he bore a faint resemblance to Chen Cheng’s memory of his late father, Chen Ping.

In a flash, Chen Cheng leaped down from the thirty-foot-high stockade wall. His movements were so effortless it was as if he were walking on level ground.

To the villagers, this feat was no different from watching a Celestial God descend from the heavens, and they were left even more astounded.

Seeing Chen Cheng walk slowly toward him, Chen An assumed the Purple-clothed Guard from the Demon Suppression Department wanted to question him and hurriedly gave a respectful bow.

"This old one is Chen An. Greetings, Sir Purple-clothed Guard."

He then made to pull his two sons down to kowtow again before their savior.

Chen Cheng stepped forward and gently held him up with one hand. Chen An felt his body go light, unable to kneel no matter how hard he tried.

"Uncle, there’s no need for such formalities," Chen Cheng said with a smile.

Startled by the address, Chen An was taken aback and studied Chen Cheng closely.

He noticed the young man’s refined features and saw a faint resemblance to his own brother, Chen Ping, in his eyes and brow.

"Sir... you are?"

Chen An asked, a mix of shock and delight in his voice.

Chen Cheng said, "Uncle, I’m Chen Cheng."

"Chen Cheng... You’re Ah Ping’s son, Ah Cheng?"

Joy instantly lit up Chen An’s face. He broke into a wide, beaming smile, and his eyes sparkled with delight.

"I am," Chen Cheng replied with a solemn nod.

"It really is you, Ah Cheng!" Chen An grabbed Chen Cheng’s arm and looked him over from head to toe, clucking his tongue in admiration.

"I can’t believe it! After all these years, you’ve grown so tall!

I went to Linji City over a decade ago, and you were just a little boy back then."

Chen An was grinning from ear to ear, gesturing with his hand to show how small Chen Cheng had been.

"Wonderful, just wonderful! The Chens’ have finally produced a great man!"

The two brothers, Chen Chong and Chen Rui, were also overjoyed. They edged closer, their faces alight with excitement.

Chen An introduced them one by one. "Ah Cheng, this is Ah Chong, and this is Ah Rui."

Chen Cheng clasped his hands in salute to his two cousins. "Greetings, cousins."

"Ah Cheng, you’re a high official. There’s no need for that," Chen Chong chuckled.

Chen Rui chimed in, "That’s right, that’s right. You’re a Purple-clothed Guard, Ah Cheng. Just call us by our names."

Chen An and his sons looked rather battered after their fierce battle with the Wolf Demon.

But they had survived, which greatly relieved Chen Cheng. He said to Chen Chong,

"Your wives were worried about you, so they rushed over as well. They’re just outside the stockade now.

Why don’t you go open the gates and let them in?"

"Chunhua and Ah Ru are here too? I told those two to stay and guard the house, but they just can’t sit still!" Chen Chong grumbled as he went to open the gate for Li Chunhua and Zhang Ru.

Meanwhile, Chen Cheng asked Chen An about the Gray Wolf Demon, and his uncle recounted the events in detail.

With his own nephew having slain the Wolf Demon with a single strike from afar, he was no longer afraid of any other Demon Beasts appearing.

When the other villagers learned that this Purple-clothed Guard from the Demon Suppression Department was actually one of the Chens, they all looked at Chen An and his sons with open envy.

’To think the Chens’ produced such an incredible figure. Their ancestors must be smiling down on them!’

The Gray Wolf Demon had just been slain and several villagers were dead, so this was clearly not the time for pleasantries or catching up.

The people of Li Family Village came over to pay their respects. Chen Cheng offered a few words of comfort, then had Chen Chong, Chen Rui, and Li Chunlei lead the others in dealing with the aftermath.

He and Chen An then went up onto the stockade wall.

"Uncle, are there any other Demon Beasts in the nearby forests?"

Chen Cheng asked.

’Since I’m here,’ he thought, ’I might as well kill all the Demon Beasts in the nearby forests and eliminate this threat for the villagers.’

Chen An thought for a moment before replying, "Demon Beasts tend to have their own territories. They don’t let other Demon Beasts trespass.

The forests for twenty to thirty li around here are the Gray Wolf Demons’ territory.

We thought there was only one Gray Wolf Demon. Who would have guessed there were actually two.

If you hadn’t arrived, we all would’ve been killed by those Wolf Demons today."

As he spoke, Chen An couldn’t help but sigh, overcome with emotion once again.

It was no wonder they hadn’t been able to determine the exact number of Wolf Demons.

When the Gray Wolf Demons showed up, the villagers barely had time to hide, let alone venture into the mountains to scout out their numbers.

"Around Qingxi Town, the Gray Wolf Demons in the forests near our Chen Family Gully are some of the worst Demon Beasts we have to deal with.
