Beg Me Like You Mean It, Captain
Chapter 207: The Medical Records Prove it
Reid stared at the screen, his lips pursed tightly. He could feel every bone in his body rattling, his blood running both hot and cold.
They definitely did not see this situation coming. If that had... Maybe I would’ve done all I could to keep him off the ice for the final quarter.
It was too late to regret now. He could only hope that it all worked out better.
Five minutes later, the double doors of the medical suite were pushed open once again.
Marina walked in, wearing a sharp grey trench coat, her expression an impenetrable mask of ice. Beside her walked a tall, sharp-eyed man in a tailored suit holding a leather briefcase—Audrey Stevens, one of the top sports litigators in the state.
Following right behind them was Dr. Aris, a private medical specialist Marina had brought along to officially authenticate the files.
Coach Devin spun around, glaring at the newcomers. "Who the hell are you? This room is restricted to team personnel—"
"I am Audrey Stevens, legal counsel representing Kain Evans and Reid McCoy," the attorney announced, his voice smooth, commanding, and echoing with absolute authority as he stepped between Devin and the bed. "And this is Kain’s legal healthcare proxy and sister, Marina Evans."
Audrey opened his briefcase with a loud snap, pulling out a thick sheaf of authenticated medical records and setting them directly onto the stainless-steel tray next to the attending doctor.
"Effective immediately," he stated clearly, looking Devin and the League representatives straight in the eye, "no one in this facility interviews, questions, or examines Kain Evans without my presence. Any attempt to question my client while he is suffering from severe physical trauma and acute biological shock will be treated as a violation of his rights and met with an immediate injunction."
Devin blinked, caught completely off guard by the sudden legal stonewall. "A legal proxy? Audrey, his body just released—"
"Step aside," Stanley commanded, holding up his official badge as he stared down at Coach Devin. He was the League’s Senior Vice President of Player Operations, flanked by two official League reps.
His eyes lingered on the sweet, suffocating scent of orchids still hanging in the sterile air.
"This game is suspended indefinitely, and this facility is now under official League investigation. I need answers right now. Mr. Evans, you have ten seconds to explain why an unregistered Omega is playing on an NHL roster under a Beta contract."
Marina stepped forward, sliding smoothly between Marcus and my trauma bed. She took my cold, trembling hand in hers, her gloved fingers squeezing tight as her razor-sharp eyes locked onto the League official.
"My client will not be answering any questions while in acute biological shock," Audrey announced calmly, stepping up beside Marina. "All inquiries will go through his legal proxy and medical team."
Stanley narrowed his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest as he turned to Marina. "Fine. Then you answer, Miss Evans. Is your brother claiming he hid his sub-gender for ten years to fraudulently secure a professional contract?"
"Kain Evans did not lie to your League," Marina said confidently, her voice dropping into a tight, deadly calm. "He was a Beta when he signed his contract ten years ago. But something occurred a few weeks ago which prompted a second, late-onset presentation—a secondary manifestation that altered his biology and turned him into an Omega."
Stanley let out a short, harsh scoff, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. "A second presentation? Is this supposed to be a joke? Sub-genders lock in during adolescence. You don’t just wake up an Omega at twenty-five years old after playing a decade as a Beta."
Before Stanley could push further, Dr. Aris stepped forward, opening a leather binder and pulling out a set of authenticated medical journals and private hospital logs.
"It is no joke, Mr. Stanley," Dr. Aris spoke up, his voice steady, academic, and unshakeable. "While exceedingly rare and suppressed from public medical journals to keep sports classification simple, there are documented cases in high-density Alpha environments. Mr. Evans has become one of those rare cases. His Beta system was forced into a secondary Omega presentation due to prolonged, extreme exposure to Alpha pheromones, especially during an Alpha’s rut heat a few weeks back. So, yes, he was a Beta up until a few weeks ago. What happened tonight on the ice is a tragic biological anomaly brought on by severe hormonal shock and physical trauma."
Stanley stared at the documents, his rigid posture faltering for a fraction of a second as he absorbed the certified stamps on the research logs.
"My brother is innocent," Marina cut in, her voice ringing out through the quiet room, "save for the fact that he did not immediately disclose his secondary presentation to the League when it happened."
She paused, sweeping a cold look across the League reps and Coach Devin.
"I advised him against disclosing it immediately," Marina continued smoothly. "Because without concrete medical evidence proving that such a phenomenon is biologically possible, I knew your League would instantly dub him a liar and strip his career away. I have spent the last few weeks searching private servers for these exact source files, and I finally secured them tonight. If anyone in this organization attempts to slander my brother’s legacy or revoke his titles before reviewing these certified medical archives, we will see you in federal court."
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Stanley looked between the lawyer, the doctor, and the thick sheaf of evidence, his jaw tight as he realized the League was facing a legal minefield instead of a simple fraud case.
Coach Devin, who had been standing frozen near the counter, suddenly stepped forward, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Wait a minute," Devin rasped, his face red as he processed Marina’s words. "You said this was caused by exposure to an Alpha’s rut heat? Does that mean my Captain has been seeing an Alpha in secret despite being registered as a Beta?"
"It would appear you’re not in the loop, Coach Devin," Marina said, turning her head slightly toward him with a cool, unbothered expression. "But in fact, yes. While they didn’t make their relationship public, we can’t exactly say it didn’t happen. On the day this Alpha went into an unexpected, extreme rut, my brother was there with him. And as a result of that prolonged exposure, his system shifted."
Devin’s chest heaved, his eyes wide with rising anger and frustration. "Who is this Alpha?" he demanded, slamming his hand down on the edge of the stainless-steel tray. "Who is the bastard that turned my star Captain into an Omega right in the middle of the Finals?!"
Marina didn’t flinch. Slowly, a faint, razor-sharp smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. She turned her gaze past Devin, looking straight into the shadowed corner of the room where Reid was standing guard.
"It’s none other than your star rookie, Coach," Marina said smoothly. "Reid McCoy."
