Beneath the Red Dragon
Chapter 892 - 158: Three Armies Rise with 100,000 Troops, Sweeping Seventy Cities Across Three Kingdoms (Part 1)
"Take down these Warriors, but don’t deliberately destroy those heavy Magic-guided Cannons and Alchemy weapons,"
Multi-armed Giant Mogyes roared at the Giants and the Monster Corps: "Once we enter the city, whoever dares slaughter the civilians at will, I’ll twist your head off!"
Multi-armed Giant Mogyes was not doing this out of any kindness or justice, nor out of any sense of order and Rule; he simply felt that that fellow Gogomola’s "lawn of leeks" theory suited his tastes perfectly.
"Boom!"
Continuous strikes fell upon the plains, "Mordain’s Fury" and various Heavy Cannons roaring with explosive shockwaves in midair before crashing down from the battlements of the small barbican in front of Dorabi City’s gate.
The moment these weapons hit the ground, they ploughed a thick layer off the entire stretch of land, furrowing the vast plains into pits and trenches.
Yet weapons of such power and large-scale saturation bombardment still could not shake the advancing pace of the Golden Empire’s Legions.
In Legion-level warfare, when facing such concentrated fire, almost no General with basic combat sense would choose a dense formation advance, for that usually meant horrific casualties.
But the Golden Empire’s Legions were different.
Under the Legion’s tightly organized defense, the dense attacks caused almost no damage; the hundreds of Clay Golems, manufactured as cannon fodder, were under the control of the Heroic Spirits of the Giant Dragon Hall and possessed the strict order of a Legion, forming an indestructible Golem dome-wall before the Golden Empire Warriors.
The Casters attached to the Legion had long since, through prolonged cooperation, learned to tacitly choose the most suitable protective buffing Magic for the Legion’s formations.
Of course, most crucial were those three most formidable Siege-breaking Golems, and the two Titan-level Golems that had been simply refitted by the Magic Research Department—using Mountain Steel as flesh and Armor, and the skeletal remains of two Legendary Titans once slain under the claws of the Ancestral Red Dragon Kalon Gogomola as their Shaping cores.
Strike after strike exploded upon those two Titan-level Golems, yet could not even sway their advancing steps; massive alchemical heavy bolts pierced through the Mountain Steel defenses, only to be jammed in the bones of the Legendary Titans.
The Titan-level Golems had not yet undergone modifications to their attack-energy circuits or Control System, and their weapon systems had not been installed; though their offensive power was not yet formidable, their defensive strength surpassed all.
And while Titan-level Golems were not as mighty as true Titans, they possessed the advantage of knowing neither fear of harm nor fear of pain; in the chaos of large-scale war, to precisely destroy a Golem’s energy core built upon a Legendary Titan’s frame was almost impossible.
"The war brain is already prepared; lift all power restrictions!"
At the voice of the war brain, several excited Heroic Spirits howled as they aimed the main cannon of the Siege-breaking Golem at that small barbican; a colossal beam of light reached the air above the wall in an instant, effortlessly piercing the barbican’s energy barrier.
Then the heavy siege Magic-guided Cannons, drawn by Demon Rhinoceroses and Dragon Beasts within the Golden Empire Legions, began to take position.
Amid the continuous bombardment, the entire barbican’s firepower was suppressed.
And when the giant ship-anchors dragged by the two Titan-level Golems crashed down, the barbican was forced to confront the Golden Empire’s Legions in close-quarters combat.
Meanwhile, Karon Gogomola stood tall beneath the Royal Banners of the Kings, merely gazing calmly at the distant battlefield.
The King of Frost Giants, Ragna Heg, just like Multi-armed Giant Mogyes, had forcibly destroyed a Watchtower held by a Legendary Warrior.
But unlike Mogyes, the Frost Giant King seemed intent on capturing this Legendary Warrior alive, and so the two sides were still locked in struggle.
Sun Elf Serilus also appeared to harbor the intention of taking his opponent alive, repeatedly cutting off the retreat of that Holy Knight who sought to flee the battlefield.
Just then, a powerful rumble rose from the earth; Karon turned his head, and in the distant plains, densely packed cavalry Legions began to appear.
Those cavalry Legions bore banners of every hue; in the distance they first moved at a slow walk, then began to trot, gradually accelerating.
"It seems those Nobility long ago left a heavy cavalry Legion, capable of changing the course of battle, in advance on the battlefield’s flank,"
Elf Princess Agani Isabel stood behind Karon, gazing at the Legion Warriors who stood immovable around Emperor Karon Gogomola, then said with a laugh: "A pity they have underestimated the strength of the Golden Empire and the Allied Kings Army!"
"This is no longer a war that the Mortal World’s kingdoms can overturn! Will Your Majesty Gogomola give the order to annihilate that Noble cavalry Legion here? Our Elven Sword Dancers and Demon Archer Corps Warriors are already finding it hard to hold themselves back!"
Karon Gogomola smiled faintly; even when he smiled, the draconic planes of his cheeks made him appear especially ferocious.
"Though I sit in person upon the field, I am not the General in direct command of the Legion. How things are to be done depends on those Generals’ wisdom."
Karon Gogomola did not possess particularly profound understanding of war, but all he needed was to make the correct choices within war.
The Golden Empire lacked any so-called peerless commanders for the ages, but it did have Generals whose courage was unstoppable and whose leadership was sound.
As an Emperor, he disliked micromanagement and had no need of it; he need only convey the correct strategic objectives, and there would naturally be those who would accomplish that correct strategic intent for him.
Elf Princess Agani Isabel nodded, then glanced at the motionless Legion Warriors around them.
Through the slits in their helmets’ Face Armor, these soldiers of the Golden Empire showed not a trace of expression.
These rear-guard soldiers gripped their weapons, silently forming a tight formation around the Dragon Emperor; not a single soldier turned to look at the massed, surging tide of Noble Heavy Armor Knight Corps in the distance, rushing toward them like dark clouds.
As the Heavy Shield and Long Spear Legion, these Warriors were not suited to storm the terrain-complex Dorabi City, and so remained in the rear.
And though Agani Isabel knew little of military matters, she at least understood that to charge cavalry head-on against a tightly arrayed Heavy Shield and Long Spear Legion on the plains was an act of folly.
No matter how formidable the cavalry Legion, it needed to execute tactical penetrations, flanking charges, and segmentation maneuvers, seeking opportunities from the sides, not charging straight into the enemy’s formation.
Those Nobility had not anticipated that the seemingly unbreakable Marino Defense Line would also fail to achieve its intended tactical purpose.
Centaur Chiron merely gave a slight wave of his hand, and those silent Death Knights had already begun to spread out to both sides, as though intending to leave the entire front of the reserve Legion and the hundreds of thousands strong Civilian Labor Camp bare to the oncoming Heavy Armor Knight Corps, which were slowly gathering speed.
Agani Isabel shook her head, glanced at the young Giant Dragons still flitting about the camp and peering in all directions, and knew in her heart that the annihilation of this Noble Legion was already a foregone conclusion.
What interested her more now was why Karon Gogomola had brought even the hatchlings of the Gogomola Dragon Group to his side in such a war.
This was utterly at odds with the impression all beings in the Icaria World held of the Giant Dragon Race; though Dragons came in every temperament, even those most doting upon their offspring rarely did this—forever using their own actions to subtly teach and influence those hatchlings.
"Gogomola doesn’t seem like a Giant Dragon who’s fond of hatchlings either," Agani looked at the Dragon Descendant before her, growing somewhat curious as to what form the blood-descended offspring of this Dragon would take when they were born.
