Black Phoenix Heir
Chapter 152 — Return To The Library
A few hours later, Monklalusa had finally stopped looking at Victor as though he were some fascinating specimen that needed to be dissected immediately.
The ancient Lava Rock Monkey had spent a considerable amount of time examining Victor's inner world and soul, trying to determine exactly what allowed his presence to affect the curse.
Victor's Core was normal.
His Spiritual Energy was unusual in some ways, but nothing immediately stood out as something capable of interfering with a curse that had remained for more than seven thousand years.
There was only one possibility.
His flame.
The problem was that neither of them understood how.
Victor had even attempted to focus his Black Flame directly into Monklalusa's body.
The result was noticeable.
The curse reacted.
It shifted slightly whenever the Black Flame came into contact with it.
But that was all.
The curse was simply too powerful.
Monklalusa eventually came to a simple conclusion.
Victor needed time.
His Black Phoenix Flame would have to grow considerably stronger before it could actually purify the curse directly.
Lyra's situation was different.
Because of the Soul Bond, she wasn't merely being exposed to Victor's flame occasionally.
She was connected to him.
A portion of his Soul Power and Black Phoenix Flame was constantly linked to her through their bond.
That meant the curse was being weakened continuously.
It couldn't repair itself fast enough to completely counteract the effect.
Monklalusa believed that if Victor continued growing stronger, there would eventually come a point where his flame could directly purify the curse.
It might take years.
But that didn't bother him.
He had already waited seven thousand years.
What were a few more?
With that conclusion reached, Monklalusa returned to the cultivation chamber.
He walked back toward the lava pool, sat down, and began cultivating in silence.
For the first time in hours, Victor had some peace.
He sat quietly for a moment.
Then his thoughts returned to the curse.
Why does my Black Flame have the ability to degrade it?
It wasn't a normal curse.
Monklalusa had spent thousands of years trying to understand it.
And yet, somehow, Victor's Black Phoenix Flame could make it weaken.
What exactly was the Black Phoenix Clan?
Victor lowered his gaze.
Who were they?
The more he learned about his bloodline, the more questions appeared.
He had already discovered that the Black Phoenix Clan possessed ancient knowledge.
Now even their flame could affect a curse that had remained untouched for thousands of years.
Victor couldn't help but wonder where his Black Phoenix Flame had actually come from.
I'll figure it out eventually.
Understanding the Black Phoenix Clan had officially become another one of his goals.
Then another thought suddenly struck him.
Victor's eyes widened.
Crap It's been a couple of months since I last visited Jack.
1
He hadn't even realized how long it had been.
So much had happened.
The tribe.
The crypt.
The Lava Rock Monkey Clan.
The Shadow Fox Clan.
Lyra's execution.
There had barely been enough time to breathe.
But Victor knew none of those excuses would matter to Jack.
He could already imagine the Library Spirit's expression.
He might have reverted back to Lonely Jack.
1
Victor shook his head.
I better visit Jack.
He turned toward Lyra.
"I'm going to cultivate for a little while."
"Okay."
Victor stood and walked back into the cultivation chamber.
Lyra watched him for a moment.
Then she looked toward the chamber.
The curse was still degrading whenever she remained close to him.
There was no reason to waste the opportunity.
She stood and followed him inside.
Victor sat down and closed his eyes.
A moment later, he noticed someone sitting beside him.
He opened one eye.
Lyra was already seated next to him.
Victor stared at her for a second.
Then he closed his eyes again.
He focused on the Black Flame within his Inner World.
His consciousness gradually sank inward.
Then—
His spiritual body appeared inside the Library.
The enormous structure floated before him, just as it always had.
For a brief moment, Victor simply looked around.
Then a familiar voice echoed through the library.
"Oh, ho, ho, ho!"
Victor winced.
"Look who finally decided to visit me!"
Jack's voice echoed throughout the enormous library.
"You just decided to forget about me for a long time, didn't you, Victor?"
Victor looked up.
Jack was already there.
As expected.
Victor sighed.
"I'm sorry. There was a lot going on. I didn't really have time to enter the Library."
"You didn't even have five minutes?"
Jack's voice was filled with exaggerated outrage.
"Not even five minutes to come in and say hello? You forced me to start talking to myself again!"
1
Victor Just listened.
"Do you know what it's like to have a conversation with yourself?"
1
Victor shook his head.
"I'm sorry, Jack."
Jack remained silent for several seconds.
Then he sighed.
"Fine."
Victor knew better than to push his luck.
Instead, he began explaining everything that had happened.
Jack listened quietly.
When Victor finished explaining the Soul Bond, Jack nodded.
"I felt that connection form with your soul."
Victor raised an eyebrow.
"You did?"
"I was wondering what it was."
Jack looked thoughtful.
"But that explains quite a bit."
He paused.
"I also noticed your Soul Power suddenly increased at an incredible rate. Then you gained access to new areas of the Library."
Victor's eyes widened.
"Wait. I did?"
Jack nodded.
He had been so focused on everything happening outside that he hadn't realized the Library itself had changed.
"What did I gain access to?"
Jack smiled.
"You unlocked another Knowledge Trial."
Victor's interest immediately increased.
"What kind?"
Jack gestured toward the enormous shelves.
"Knowledge concerning Tier Two alchemical plants, along with beasts around the Beast Soldier level that can be used as alchemical ingredients and materials."
Victor paused.
He had been expecting something a little more immediately useful.
Still…
Knowledge was knowledge.
And he had already learned how valuable the Library could be.
Victor nodded.
"I'll take it."
Jack smiled.
Victor then remembered something else.
"Jack."
"Hm?"
"I know you're not allowed to tell me much about the Black Phoenix Clan."
Jack's expression became slightly more serious.
"But can you tell me anything about my Black Flame?"
Victor looked directly at him.
"Why is it able to purify the curse?"
Jack thought about it for a moment.
"The Black Phoenix Flame has always possessed an extremely strong purification nature."
Victor listened carefully.
"Out of all the flames in the world, it's one of the purest."
Jack raised a finger.
"Because of that purity, it has an extraordinary ability to cleanse and purify things."
Victor nodded slowly.
That made sense.
Jack continued.
"But to make full use of that purification ability, your flame needs to reach Tier Three."
Victor's expression stiffened.
Jack continued.
"My guess is that the only reason it's working so effectively on Lyra is because your souls are connected."
He pointed toward Victor.
"She has a constant connection to your Black Flame through the Soul Bond. Your flame doesn't have to overpower the curse all at once. It's constantly wearing it down."
Victor nodded.
"Yeah. That makes sense."
He thought about it for a moment.
There was something else he hadn't done in a long time.
Alchemy.
Victor had been so busy that he'd almost completely forgotten about it.
The last time his Soul Power had increased significantly, he hadn't trusted entering the Library because Lyra had still been his enemy.
Now she was back.
And the connection between them had returned.
Victor's eyes slowly brightened.
This might actually be the perfect time.
He hadn't practiced alchemy in far too long.
And now he had access to the Library again.
Victor turned toward him.
"I think I'm going to—"
A sound suddenly came from behind him.
Victor stopped.
His smile disappeared.
He slowly turned his head.
Something had just made noise in the library.
And whatever it was…
It wasn't supposed to be there.
