[BL]The Matchmaker Guide Doesn't Want Love
Chapter 211: Ch 211: Are you not going to Regret? - Part 1
Noah rested for a few hours before he decided that he could not sleep anymore. And coincidentally, it was time to take the next specimen for the experiment as well, so he headed towards the child-rearing facility.
The children he was looking after were sitting in their cell, and they looked up at him with curious eyes, waiting for him to say anything to them. But for some reason, it was hard for Noah to look these kids in the eyes.
The reason these kids were in the cages once more was because the experiment that had been paused before due to a lack of resources had been opened up again after the state saw Alan and Daniel’s potential.
The Esper-Guide pair was making waves and had gotten so famous that they had become household names.
At the same time, they had shown no desire to talk about their past or have anything to do with it. And that included him as well.
Not that it bothered him or anything. It had been a long time since he had even talked to one of them.
Anyway, for now, it was crucial to check up on the kids he was looking after. Most of them were civilian kids left here in hopes of turning them into high-class espers and guides. But so far, most kids had gotten sick because of the experiment.
As Noah passed through the corridor of these children, he could not help but feel like his every move was being noticed by these curious eyes. The kids were looking and judging him, making him feel self-conscious.
Not that these kids could see him through the one-way mirror anyway.
Finally, he stopped in front of the cage which contained the specimen for today’s experiment, and he knocked on the one-way mirror to inform them that he was here.
The oldest specimen walked towards the glass and placed his hand on it, indicating that he had heard Noah. And the door to that room opened, allowing the oldest kid to walk out.
"I am here to send the person who was scheduled for the experiment today to the office before I head to bed. Can you bring your roommate out?"
Noah asked the oldest, who hesitated before looking at him with pleading eyes.
"Our youngest is sick. He has been for some time, but every time we tell someone, they brush it off. Can he be exempted from the experiment?"
The kid asked, knowing fully well what happened to someone who was sick and could no longer participate in an experiment. It was not the first time this had happened.
And Noah felt sorry for the sick kid.
But he could not show mercy even then.
"I apologise, but we cannot do that this time. The head researcher’s time and resources are limited, and we are being pressured by the higher-ups and your parents as well. So let’s not make it any more difficult than it needs to be."
Noah’s heart felt like it was sinking when he said these words. Even he knew that it was bullshit, and yet, he could not stop his mouth from spouting them out.
He looked at the disheartened kid with a sorry look on his face, and the kid looked back with a small but defeated smile.
"I see. I guess you are right. I will bring our youngest out and send him with you. But promise me that you will bring him back."
There was no light in the kid’s eyes when he begged Noah to keep the other kid safe and sound. But there was a hint of trust behind that gaze that stunned Noah.
He felt like he had to keep that trust at all costs. And yet, there was little he could actually do to help out here.
"I... will do my best. Now, shall we go?"
Noah extended his hand towards the kid, and the kid hesitated but took that hand.
From here on, all Noah needed to do was deliver this kid to the head professor’s team, but he hesitated to leave the kid be. His instincts told him that he should stay with the kid and check up on him.
The kid looked up, his face pale and lifeless. There was no questioning in Noah’s mind whether the kid was sick or not. Those feverish eyes said everything there was to say about this kid.
But this kid was not awake. Rather, he looked like he was rejecting awakening.
Noah had a feeling that something terrible might happen to this kid if he pushed himself, but he chose to ignore that feeling and continue forward anyway.
So he knocked on the lab’s door and felt his head hurting. His hands felt sweaty, and in his heart, he knew that what he was doing was wrong. He was likely making a mistake from which he would not be able to come back.
However, his body refused to listen to him, and he kept moving towards the lab’s door.
He knocked on it and was allowed inside by the lab’s automatic sensor.
The scientists barely spared him a glance before they looked at the kid he had brought with curious eyes and decided to grab him harshly.
The kid was not able to keep up and stumbled, causing Noah to immediately try and stabilise him.
"Hey, be careful with this kid. He is sick right now. In fact, it would be better if you don’t experiment on him at all."
Noah pointed out, causing the scientists to look at him like he was losing his mind.
Finally, one of them sighed and turned to look at Noah right in the eyes.
"Subject Noah, you have no right to stop us. This kid’s parents volunteered him into this programme. Whatever happens next is legal and his responsibility. Please stay out of it if you know what is good for you."
That was a threat, and it made Noah flinch. He felt like he had to protest, but no words came out of his mouth.
In the end, he simply sat back with a stunned look on his face.
