Breaking SSS-Rank Heroines

Chapter 43: The Borrowed Robe

Jinhae

My lucky day.

Seolhwa lay with her chest exposed, her cover shredded.

The corridor curved left. The vault was around the bend. Ahyun's voice echoed from that direction, calling my name, calling Seol's name. Footsteps, closer.

I had seconds.

“I—I can explain,” Seol stammered. Her hands clawed at the ruined binding, trying to press the torn linen strips back over her breasts. The fabric was shredded beyond salvage. It fell away as fast as she gathered it.

Her eyes were wild. An eighteen-year-old girl whose entire world was collapsing.

I pulled my outer robe off. Blood from the claw marks across my chest smeared against the inside of the robe as I swung it around Seol's shoulders.

The dark fabric settled over her from collar to mid-thigh.

I pulled it closed across her front. My knuckles brushed the swell of her breast through the cloth. Her breath caught.

“Not now,” I said.

Her mouth opened.

“You have your reasons,” I continued. “We can talk after we're out of this maze. But right now, Ahyun is seconds from turning that corner, and if she sees—”

“I know.” She pulled the robe tighter. Her fingers were shaking.

“Can you stand?”

She nodded.

I took her arm and pulled her upright. She swayed. The tail strike had hit her across the chest hard enough to crack something.

She looked down at herself. My robe hung loose on her smaller frame. The dark gray fabric covered everything, but the shape beneath was wrong.

“I need—” She looked around. Found one of the longer strips of torn linen on the ground. “Turn around.”

I turned.

Behind me, the sound of fabric being rearranged. Quick, desperate motions.

She was using whatever remained of the binding and the spare cloth from my robe to flatten herself.

It took fifteen seconds.

“Done,” she said.

I turned back.

She stood in my robe, cinched at the waist with her own belt. The fabric was too broad in the shoulders, too long in the sleeves. She'd rolled the cuffs twice. The improvised binding beneath wasn't as thorough as her usual work, but it would hold.

She looked like a boy who'd borrowed his older brother's coat after a rough fight.

“Thank you,” she said quietly.

The words came out stripped of the clipped martial precision she usually wore like armor.

“Let's go,” I said.

We turned the corner into the vault and walked into a screaming match.

“—STOOD THERE!”

The Iron Serpent heiress stood in the center of the vault, both dao sheathed, her fists balled at her sides. Blood from a cut along her hairline had dried in a streak across her left cheek, and her long dark hair had half-escaped its severe knot. It hung around her shoulders in wild waves, a furious frame for an even more furious face.

The fury was for Baek Museong.

He stood six paces from her. His sword was sheathed. His white-and-gold robes were stained with dust and scored by claw marks along the left sleeve. His face was carefully arranged into controlled displeasure.

Weight on his back heel. The posture of a man who wanted to be anywhere else and was too proud to admit it.

“That's not what happened,” he said.

“I watched you!” Harin advanced a step. Her finger jabbed toward the corridor we'd entered through. “Your sister was on the ground! I had that thing's tail pinning me to the wall! And you were standing at the exit, deciding whether to run!”

“I was assessing the situation—”

“You were LEAVING!”

The word cracked across the vault.

Soyeon stood against the far wall. Her cracked spear leaned beside her. The gash above her eye had stopped bleeding, but the bruise was already purpling from brow to cheekbone. She watched her brother with an expression that was impossible to read.

“If those four hadn't shown up—” Harin pointed at us without looking. “If that swordsman hadn't started cutting tails, you and I both know what you would have done.”

“I would have engaged.”

“When? After the fox finished chewing through your sister's spine?”

Museong's jaw worked.

Nobody spoke.

He broke it by turning on his heel and walking toward the far corridor.

“We're done here,” he said over his shoulder.

Jinmu materialized from the shadows near the ceiling. The Shadow Lotus heir dropped to the floor without a sound, landing in a crouch behind Museong's right shoulder. She fell into step behind him.

The two of them disappeared into the corridor. The sound of Museong's boots on stone faded.

Harin stared after them. Her fists opened and closed twice. Then she exhaled through her teeth and turned toward us.

Her gaze swept the group. Landing on Seol first, taking in the borrowed robe, the blood on the sword still clutched in one hand. Then me, shirtless, three claw marks carved across my chest, blood drying in dark rivulets down my stomach.

Harin's eyes came back to me.

“Cheon Harin,” she said. “Iron Serpent Sect.” She bowed. “Thank you. If your team hadn't engaged when you did, Soyeon and I would have been dead.”

“Kang Jinhae,” I said. “Kang family. This is Seol, of the Haeun Sword House. Lee Seorin. And Ahyun.”

Harin's gaze lingered on Seorin.

Whatever she concluded, she kept it behind her teeth.

“Your friend needs treatment,” I said. I nodded toward Soyeon. “Ahyun is our healer.”

Harin glanced at Soyeon. The younger girl pressed her lips together and said nothing.

“Go,” Harin said to her.

I was already walking toward Soyeon.

She watched me approach with the same quiet wariness. Her cracked spear lay against the wall beside her. Her left hand was pressed against her ribs, holding something in place.

“May I?” I asked.

She hesitated. Then lowered her hand.

Her ribs were bruised along the left side. One, possibly two were cracked. The gash above her eye was shallow but long, extending from the eyebrow to the hairline.

“Ahyun,” I called. “You know what to do.”

Ahyun was already beside me. The medicine bag opened. Her hands moved with the practiced efficiency that came from years of training. The linen appeared, cut to size. The salve tin opened with a soft click.

“Please hold still,” Ahyun said softly. She touched Soyeon's jaw with two fingers, tilting the girl's head toward the light. “This might sting a little. I'm sorry.”

She cleaned the gash. Applied the salve. Wrapped the linen in a tight, neat bandage that held the wound edges closed.

“The ribs,” I said quietly.

Ahyun's hands moved to Soyeon's left side. She pressed gently. Soyeon winced.

“Two cracked,” Ahyun said. “We'll bind them properly once we're above ground. You'll need at least three weeks of rest.” She paused. Offered a small, apologetic smile. “Please be careful until then. If they shift, your lung could be in danger.”

Soyeon's face fell.

“Three weeks?”

“I'm sorry,” Ahyun said. “But I promise you'll heal well if you're patient.”

Soyeon closed her mouth.

Across the vault, Seorin had knelt beside Harin. The Iron Serpent heiress had a deep bruise along her forearm and a shallow cut across her left shoulder where one of the tails had caught her.

Seorin's hands were steady. She tore a strip of clean cloth from the lining of her own robe without being asked and pressed it against the shoulder wound.

“You don't have to—” Harin began.

“Hold still,” Seorin said.

Harin held still.

When Ahyun finished with Soyeon, I offered the younger Baek my hand.

“Can you walk?”

She took it. Tested her weight.

“Yes.”

“Then stay behind our formation. Seol leads, I navigate.”

Soyeon looked at me. The same searching gaze she'd given me upstairs.

“Thank you,” she said. “Again.”

“You can stop thanking me after we're out.”

Seol took the front. Both swords drawn, though the left arm moved stiffly where the tail had struck her shoulder. She didn't complain.

I fell in behind her.

“Second left,” I said. “Then straight for forty paces.”

The formation was loose, but the creatures were either dead or hiding. Nothing came at us. Light showed ahead.

“Exit,” I said.

We climbed.
