Chapter 128: The Test Result
Chapter 128: The Test Result
Kaden’s POV
I kept walking back and forth across the floor of my bedroom, my jaw clenched tightly. My mind was spinning out of control as I waited for the results.
This has to be a mistake, I thought, running a rough hand through my hair. Rebecca wouldn’t dare take those pills. She knows what is at stake. She knows the punishment is death.
But then, a dark, heavy doubt crept into my mind, ruining my hope. On second thought... why wouldn’t she do it? I was a monster in her eyes. I had locked her away, shamed her in front of the pack elders, and treated her like an object. Why would she ever want to have my child? To her, having my baby meant she was bearing a child for a monster. It made perfect sense that she would try to protect herself from me.
The thought that she had played me for a fool burned through my veins like fire. I had shown her kindness even when I shouldn’t have, and she had paid me back by secretly ruining my chance for an heir.
A sharp, heavy knock broke the silence of the room.
"Enter!" I shouted.
The heavy wood doors pushed open, and Beta Logan stepped inside, followed closely by Doctor Bernard and Doctor Crystal. Both of the new doctors looked very pale, keeping their eyes firmly on the floor.
"Well?" I demanded, my voice dropping into a deadly, scarily low tone. "What did you find?"
Doctor Bernard swallowed hard, stepping forward with a shaking hand as he held out his medical report. "Alpha King... Doctor Thomas was completely right. The tests are clear. The results are completely positive."
My heart dropped like a stone into a dark hole.
"Your breeder has been taking very strong birth control hormones for over three weeks now," Doctor Crystal added, her voice full of fear. "The dose is very high. If Doctor Thomas hadn’t run that test this morning, you would have never known. But Alpha... that is not the only bad news. There is a big problem."
I turned on her, my dark aura flaring so angrily that both doctors took a step back at the same time. "Speak!"
"The strength of the medicine she has been taking has completely messed up her internal system," Doctor Bernard explained quickly, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Her hormone levels are totally destroyed. It has badly hurt her chances of getting pregnant. Alpha, first she needs to tell us the exact name of the pills she took so we know what we are dealing with. We need to start a strong hormone treatment on her right away."
"And if the treatment fails?" I hissed, the air in the room turning freezing cold.
Doctor Crystal looked up, her eyes filled with real fear. "If the treatment works, we can balance her hormones and fix her system. But if the treatment doesn’t work... then I am afraid she will be permanently barren. She will never be able to get pregnant."
Permanently barren. The words echoed in my head, completely breaking the last bit of my control. The plan was ruined. My bloodline was in danger. And the woman I had foolishly started to feel softly for had destroyed everything.
A blinding, white-hot fury took over my entire body. I didn’t say a single word to Logan or the doctors. I stormed out of my room, my robe flying behind me like smoke as I practically ran through the hallways toward her wing. Every step I took felt like thunder shaking the palace.
I reached the double doors of her room and slammed them open with so much force they rattled loudly against the stone walls.
Rebecca was sitting on the edge of the bed, her face pale and stained with tears. The moment she saw me, her blue eyes widened in pure terror.
Before she could even react, I seized her by the shoulders, hauled her effortlessly off the bed, and slammed her against the cold stone wall with enough force to knock the breath from her lungs.
A sharp cry escaped her lips as her back struck the cold stone. Her feet dangled helplessly several inches above the floor, kicking desperately for something to stand on. Her tiny fingers wrapped around my wrists, trying with all her strength to loosen my crushing grip, but I didn’t move an inch.
"We made a deal!" I shouted directly into her face, my voice booming so loudly the glass jars on the table shattered. My grip on her arms was tight like iron, pinning her firmly in place as I glared into her frightened eyes. "I let you live, and you agreed to bear my child! How dare you take me for a fool, Rebecca?!"
"I didn’t do it!" Rebecca screamed back, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her pale face. She was shaking hard against the stone wall, but she looked straight into my eyes. "I swear to you, Alpha Kaden, I have never taken any pills! I want to live! Why would I do something that would make you kill me?"
"Because you hate me!" I roared, my grip tightening on her arms. I was sure I had injured her. "Every time you look at me, all you see is a monster! You’d rather destroy your own womb than carry my child!"
"No! Please listen to me!" she sobbed, gasping for breath under my heavy weight. "I haven’t taken any pills since I woke up from my coma! Stephanie knows! Ask her! She brings me my food every single day!"
"The doctor said the drugs have been in your system for more than two weeks!" I roared back, my voice shaking the entire room. "More than two weeks, Rebecca! You have been doing this since before you even went into a coma!"
"No! It’s a lie! I didn’t do it!" she wailed, her body trembling violently under my hands.
I stared into her tear-filled blue eyes, my chest heaving as a heavy, painful weight pressed down on my heart. The betrayal felt like a physical blade twisting in my chest. I couldn’t even look at her anymore without wanting to tear something apart.
With a low growl, I let go of her arms. Rebecca instantly slid down the wall, collapsing onto the floor in a small, shaking heap, weeping into her hands.
Slowly, I turned my furious gaze toward the corner of the room.
Stephanie was standing there, completely frozen, her face white with horror. The moment my green eyes locked onto her, she let out a small, terrified gasp.
In a fraction of a second, I crossed the room. Before she could even try to run or beg for mercy, I slammed my hand out, grabbing Stephanie tightly by the throat and pinning her against the wooden closet.
"Alpha! Please!" Stephanie choked out, her hands clawing desperately at my iron grip, her small legs dangling off the floor.
"Shut up!" I hissed, my face inches from hers as my wolf clawed at my mind, demanding blood. "You think I forgot, Stephanie? You think I am a fool?"
I squeezed her neck a little tighter, watching her eyes widen in pure terror.
"You were the one who gave Rebecca those sleeping pills before!" I reminded her, my voice dropping into a deadly, vicious whisper. "I already know what you are capable of. I let you live back then, and this is how you pay me back? You helped her get those birth control pills, didn’t you? You are the one smuggling the medicine into my palace!"
From the floor, Rebecca let out a breathless scream. "No! Alpha Kaden, stop! She didn’t do it!"
I ignored her, keeping my eyes locked on the gasping maid in my grip. "This is teamwork," I growled, a bitter, angry smile touching my lips. "The two of you have been working together from the very start. She didn’t want to bear my child, and you helped her!"
