"Yes, but now I’m back." Avery Jane took a sip of her soy milk. She had a job interview today. She glanced at herself, wearing the simplest leggings and a long cotton T-shirt. She didn’t have any extra money to buy a formal outfit, hoping that she wouldn’t look too shabby now. Life’s encounters are just that magical. A few days ago, she was still living in a fairy-tale-like castle, surrounded by servants. Even a bowl of soy milk she drank probably had each bean meticulously selected. Now she sat in front of a small stall, drinking a bowl of soy milk costing two dollars. There was no time to lament life. She desperately needed to find a job to support herself first.

The largest luxury mall in the city, housing numerous global brands, with flagship stores displaying their unique styles, leaving a deep impression. "We’re in the men’s clothing department. It’s eight hours a day, shift work. You can’t sit down during work; can you do it?" The supervisor, a woman in her early thirties, dressed in a tidy black suit skirt, appeared rigorous and meticulous. However, she spoke kindly, and Avery Jane nodded.

This girl was very beautiful, so much so that no one could rival her in this mall famous for its beautiful saleswomen. For such a girl, finding a wealthy partner or marrying a rich man is an extremely simple thing. Yet, she wore the cheapest clothes and had a clear, transparent gaze. She liked such girls. However, standing for eight hours a day, she wasn’t sure if the girl could handle it. She seemed fragile, but men loved it. Even if the brand was well-known, in a competitive environment, it still depended on the saleswomen’s skills. With Avery Jane standing out, effortlessly, many men would foolishly spend money in the store to please her.

"I can do it." Avery Jane nodded eagerly. The benefits here were decent. If she got the job, her life would have some stability.

"Okay, both of the previous saleswomen left suddenly due to pregnancy. You can start work tomorrow, right? Also, come directly to me when you arrive. I’ll guide you for a while. Actually, we’re not busy here. After all, the clothes are expensive, not like a supermarket; we have some regular customers. You’ll adapt quickly." The supervisor looked Avery Jane up and down. "Makeup, you must wear makeup starting from tomorrow. That’s basic." Her discerning eyes scrutinized Avery Jane’s face. Although it was flawlessly beautiful, it was too pale, resembling a sickly beauty. This made her a bit worried; it would be unbearable if she kept taking sick leave.

"Okay." Avery Jane nodded obediently.

Hopefully, this job can last longer. The head office’s first requirement for hiring is beauty, but pretty girls never stay long. Even with high salaries, they still end up with a wealthy man. Nowadays, it’s hard to understand what these young women are thinking—one of them even settled for a man in his fifties right after leaving.

Two streets away was the Hughes Clan. The towering building pierced the bustling center like a sharp sword. Avery Jane looked up at the top floor, the place she once knew well, her eyes suddenly reddening. Those people, that life had drifted far away from her, like a dream from a past life......

The study remained shrouded in darkness, tears silently welling up from his eyes, brazenly flowing down his sharp, cold face. No matter how strong the liquor, it couldn’t make him forget. Pressing his fingers against his lips, he bit down hard, tasting blood in his mouth. It was another unbearable night. He wanted to call her name, but it was as if needles were stabbing his throat, making him unable to speak. His longing for her was beyond any remedy.

When he woke, he thought of her; when he ate, he thought of her. At night, the longing overwhelmed him, hopelessly so. From the first moment he laid eyes on her, he couldn’t control the images replaying over and over in his mind. Lucas Yates, you should be happy. I took away your eyes, but you brought Avery Jane into those eyes and robbed me of my heart. How can a person live without a heart?
