Sophia and Dav made it up to the fifth level of the World Tree only to receive devastating news: there was no way home.

Issvako offers a way forward, but it requires them to follow in the footsteps of an old friend of the Wanderer’s, the Mage, Lady M’Beja, the best spellcaster Revanos has ever known. She didn’t return, and no one knows why.

No one even knows where she went, but Sophia and Dav know something they don’t: they have clues. The clues seem to come from the World Tree or even the Guide itself, and they seem to have been building since Sophia and Dav first set foot in the World Tree.

Someone other than Issvako seems to want the Mage or her destination found, and it seems all too likely that the Mage followed the same clues that Sophia and Dav now have. It’s something they can’t avoid if they want to go home, so all they can do is retrace the Mage’s trail and hope that they do not also disappear.

Or perhaps they should hope that they do - as long as it’s into the place they want to go.
