Chapter 86: Thoughts on Going Premium

Chapter 86: Thoughts on Going Premium

This book will be going premium at midnight tomorrow.

First off, thank you, everyone. This book has only made it this far because of your support.

When it comes to web novels, I’m a newcomer, but not a complete beginner.

I started trying my hand at writing back in college and even got contracts for two books. But the quality was terrible, and neither of them made it to the premium stage. They were both dropped after about a hundred thousand characters.

Later, I had to give it up because of work.

This year, my job changed. I was transferred to a relatively relaxed department. Now that I’m getting older, I’ve lost the ambition to climb the corporate ladder, so I decided to pick up my childhood dream again.

Before starting this book, I had two ideas. One of them is the book you’re reading now.

The other was a book inspired by the character settings and plot conflicts of that Water Monkey novel.

I wrote about thirty thousand characters for both of them.

After thinking it over for a long time, I finally chose to publish this one.

For a newcomer, imitation is the easiest way to get results.

But if you want to improve quickly, you have to forge your own path.

Even if the tropes and plot points might seem cliché by today’s web novel standards, most of the story is my own creation, which gives me more creative freedom.

By struggling through a book like this and making all the inevitable mistakes, I can actually learn and improve.

Writing this book up to this point, I’ve received a lot of criticism—surprisingly so.

Early on, it really affected my mood. Sometimes I’d sit in front of my computer without any desire to write a single word.

I could only console myself by asking: what was my original reason for writing this book?

To get it to the premium stage!

If the results aren’t good, I’ll wrap it up at around five or six hundred thousand characters and then go write the other book.

If I can just get 1,000 average subscriptions, I’ll keep writing until it’s over one and a half million characters long. That was the novel’s estimated length when I signed the contract.

Even bestsellers and books with tens of thousands of subscribers get plenty of hate. So, for a near-beginner like me, who’s just hoping to get to premium with 1,000 average subs, it’s completely normal to get a lot of criticism for not handling the payoff or building anticipation well.

And so, with that kind of Ah Q-style self-consolation, I’ve managed to keep going.

In the end, while some people criticize it, others enjoy it.

There are still so many readers quietly supporting me. Thank you!

My sincerest thanks!

My sincerest thanks!

My sincerest thanks!

Since this is my first time doing this, I still have to figure out the process, so the update right after midnight might be a little slow. But I promise I won’t short you on Chapters.
