Chapter 267

Alex finally reached Celine’s side and immediately dropped to his knees beside her.

"Celine!"

He carefully turned her over, trying not to cause any unnecessary movement that might worsen her injuries and make things even worse than it is already. Her pale face looked frighteningly paler than before, and several strands of her black hair were stuck to her cheeks. There was even dried blood around the corner of her mouth, while her clothes were torn in several places, revealing the terrible injuries beneath them.

For a moment, Alex felt his heart tighten. He had seen countless terrible things since becoming an Awakened, and he had even killed without hesitation when the situation demanded it. Yet seeing Celine lying helplessly in front of him was something else entirely.

Sure he didn’t fully love her yet, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t his woman. And as his woman he was responsible for her, so seeing her so hurt all because he didn’t come in time had him hating himself for it.

"Celine, can you hear me?"

Sadly there was no response from her. Alex swallowed hard and quickly placed two fingers against her neck, searching for a pulse. When he felt the faint beat beneath her skin, his tense shoulders finally relaxed, and he released a long breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.

Thank goodness. She was still breathing.

Although her breathing was weak and her condition appeared terrible, at least she was alive. That was what mattered most to him right now. Alex carefully brushed the hair away from her face, studying her injuries with a troubled expression.

"I’m sorry I didn’t come in time if not you wouldn’t have been this injured."

His voice was barely above a whisper, but the coldness in his eyes was unmistakable.

He wanted nothing more than to find George right now and tear the bastard apart with his own hands. Unfortunately, the man had escaped through that strange portal, and Alex had no idea where to begin looking for him.

There was nothing he could do about that for the moment.

His attention returned to Celine, as long as her injuries weren’t beyond what the potion could repair, a single sip should be more than enough to stabilize her and fix her up, good as new.

Just then someone’s voice came from behind him.

"Alex."

He looked up to see Phil approaching him with his expression looking very serious. More serious than he had even seen on the man’s face. Carl and the other member of the squad remained a short distance away, keeping watch over their surroundings while examining the destruction both he, George and Celine had left behind from their battle.

Phil stopped beside Alex and glanced at the unconscious Celine before looking back at him.

"With the way you’re acting over her, she seems like someone close to you. Is she going to be okay?"

"She should be fine after I heal her," Alex answered.

Phil nodded, though the concern on his face didn’t disappear.

"What happened here? We received reports of a massive disturbance, and by the time we arrived, the entire area looked like a war zone. There are destroyed buildings everywhere, and as for the damage around here it looks completely insane. I can’t even begin imagining how tough it had to be"

He paused, studying Alex’s bloodstained clothes.

"And you look like you’ve been through hell yourself."

Alex couldn’t help giving a bitter smile.

"Is it really that obvious? But fine I’ll tell you what happened."

He glanced toward the place where George had disappeared, then began explaining what had happened.

He told Phil that George had targeted Celine and him. That when he arrived, George had attempted to kill them both, leading to a fierce confrontation that ended with the man escaping through a portal the moment he saw the helicopter approaching.

Alex also explained that George had a connection to the late Marcus and had been trying to acquire his properties and assets. Apparently, the deaths of several people involved in that affair had disrupted his plans, and he wasn’t willing to let the matter go.

As for the mole George had mentioned, Alex explained that the man had been one of George’s associates and that their earlier actions had contributed to his death.

Of course, Alex carefully concealed several details.

He didn’t mention the full extent of his abilities, nor did he explain that he was now the owner of Marcus’s properties. He also avoided talking about how one of his abilities had been responsible for killing innocent people all because of the manipulation of that sick bastard.

There were certain things he preferred to keep to himself until he understood them better.

Phil listened without interrupting, with his expression growing increasingly grim as Alex continued. By the time he finally finished, Phil rubbed his forehead and released a long sigh he had been holding in for quite sometime now.

"That certainly explains some things, but it also raises a few questions."

"Such as?"

"How did you manage to survive against someone like him for so long?"

Alex gave him a tired look.

"Are you asking because you’re worried about me, or because you’re disappointed that I didn’t manage to kill him?"

"Both, actually."

Alex almost laughed.

"At least you’re honest."

Phil didn’t respond to the joke. Instead, he folded his arms and looked toward the ruined battlefield.

"As far as I know, George isn’t some ordinary Awakened. We’ve been hunting that man for years now, and he has always managed to escape from some of the most capable Awakened in the Bureau. The fact that you managed to keep him occupied long enough for us to arrive is already something worth acknowledging."

Alex raised an eyebrow but didn’t dwell on it. Then all of a minute he remembered something and asked with a bit of suspicion.

"Speaking of which, how did you know who George was? And how did you know he was here? You arrived remarkably quickly."
