CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 230: INTO THE ABYSS

  • Next Chapter

At the ragged edge of the known world, where the solid basalt cliffs fell away into the churning, endlessly shifting gray fog of the Mist, Caius stood looking out into the void. Beside him stood Old Bones, his broad-shouldered dark elf frame standing tall and rigid. On the brow of the sovereign, four sleek black mithril studs pulsed with a rhythmic, dark violet resonance, anchoring four mobile dimensions directly into his crown core.

Assembled behind them to see off their master was the complete high council of Castle Precipice: Grand Commander Teryn, Steward Vane, Archmage Orven, Patriarch Sereth, the multi-limbed, magnificent Humanoid Queen Mother Arachne, and the newly rotated Orc Commander for the year’s castle guard duty.

Caius turned his head slightly, his violet-gold eyes sweeping over his most loyal commanders.

"Take care of my castle and my land," Caius commanded, his voice crisp and carrying an undeniable, sovereign authority. "I embark on a journey into the uncharted unknown. I do not know when I will return. Beyond these borders, I search for answers, and for my mother, if she yet lives within these depths."

He raised a single gauntleted hand toward the sprawling horizon of his domain. "Protect this realm from invaders. Do not waste our strength or meddle in the mundane, petty affairs of mortal kingdoms. But if any foreign power dares to scheme against Castle Precipice, remember that the Thousand Eyes see all."

Caius glanced toward the Queen Mother Arachne, whose glowing compound eyes flickered in quiet acknowledgment. Across every major city and border territory, thousands of microscopic Arachne intel drones were already woven into the shadows, monitoring every breath of potential threats.

"When an enemy plots," Caius continued coldly, "you will strike with clinical precision before they can ever muster an army to march upon our gates."

In absolute, synchronized unison, Teryn, Vane, Orven, Sereth, the Queen Mother, and the Orc Commander dropped to one knee. Their voices boomed across the precipice, swearing an unbreakable oath to defend the kingdom, maintain the stasis rotation, and safeguard his sovereign seat until his eventual return.

Caius nodded, then turned to the dark elf beside him. "Enter the stud, Old Bones. I do not yet know what ambient horrors, spatial anomalies, or corruptions await us inside the mist."

"Understood, My Lord," Old Bones murmured dutifully. With a surge of thread magic, his physical form dissolved into a stream of silver-violet light, shooting straight into the first black mithril stud embedded upon Caius's brow.

Left alone at the boundary of the realm, Caius took one last look at the dark stronghold he had forged, his dark mantle billowing against the wild winds of the abyss. At twenty-five years of age, carrying an entire war machine upon his brow and a legendary elder at his side, Caius turned his back on the known world and stepped forward, disappearing completely into the endless gray ocean of the Mist.
