CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 304: THE COLOSSEUM OF DEATH

  • Next Chapter

The Dreadblade Captain roared, raising his massive, rot-dripping greatsword above his head as he prepared to crush the flesh of mortal men. He had led hundreds of vanguard breaches across shattered realms. He knew the sound of doomed soldiers, the frantic screams, the scent of panic-sweat, the desperate prayers to silent gods.

Instead, a deafening roar of thunderous applause and laughter echoed down from the high walls above.

The Dreadblade Captain’s crimson eyes darted upward beneath his bone helm, his corrupted core freezing in utter disbelief.

Along the elevated battlements of the horseshoe plaza, thousands of reserve cohorts, lodge brothers in beast-masks, and off-duty warriors sat on stone tiers as if watching a gladiatorial spectacle. They held wooden tankards of ale, leaned against the stone balustrades, and casually pointed down at the bloodbath below.

"Look at that spatial leap on the left! Beautiful form!" a Sabre-Tiger lodge veteran shouted, taking a heavy swig of beer.

"Not bad, but he missed the core by two inches!" a dark elf scout laughed from the upper balcony, throwing a piece of dried meat into his mouth. "Good one, brother! Slicers on the flank!"

The Dreadblade Captain’s mind recoiled in sheer, paralyzing horror. What... what is this place?

They had not invaded a realm cowering in fear. They had stumbled directly into an arena of monsters who viewed their terrifying rot-horde as nothing more than afternoon entertainment, a game of death crafted for their Sovereign's amusement.

Down on the blood-soaked stone, the Order of the Obsidian Feather moved not like an army, but like a murderous flock of ravens descending upon a carcass.

Practicing the aerial martial style of Ox-Neldë Muwan, the three thousand Black Crows flickered through sub-dimensional shadow folds. They zipped through the air at blinding, impossible trajectories, momentum shifting instantly without loss of kinetic force. Their heavy Macuahuitls, set with razor-sharp obsidian teeth, rotated on their wrists in unnatural, fluid angles, spinning three hundred and sixty degrees through spatial wrist-folds to deliver brutal, bone-shattering tearing strikes from blind spots.

Solar fire and spatial darkness erupted across the plaza in rhythmic bursts. Every sweep of a Macuahuitl severed corrupted limbs; every thrust of a Chimalli buckler rammed three obsidian claws straight into a Skulkin's chest-core, detonating divine light inside their marrow.

In less than fifteen minutes, the four thousand screeching Skulkins were reduced to a writhing, dying carpet of black flesh and smoldering ash.

Panicking, the Dreadblade Captain bellowed, swinging his fused greatsword in a frantic, wide arc to cleave his way toward the outer gate.

"Target lock," a cold voice echoed from space.

Ten Black Crow warriors materialized simultaneously around the giant brute, popping out of micro-rifts in folded space. They didn't offer a fair duel. Working in terrifying, predatory cohesion, four warriors thrust their clawed bucklers into his knees, shattering his joints, while two more drove their Macuahuitls into his elbows to pin his massive sword.

Before the Captain could belch a single wave of rot-miasma, the remaining four warriors swooped over his shoulders. Eight obsidian-toothed blades descended in a brutal, synchronized mob execution, severing his head, arms, and core channels in a single, blinding flash of solar-darkness light.

The Dreadblade Captain’s massive body crashed onto the stone floor, dead before it even hit the ground.

Above on the grand balcony, Supreme Commander Ix-K'an dropped to one knee before Caius's throne, flicking the black ichor off his Macuahuitl.

"The First Wave has been erased, My Sovereign," he reported, his voice steady beneath his crow helm. "Casualties stand at less than two percent, sixty wounded, fourteen fallen."

Caius leaned back on his throne, a satisfied smirk touching his lips as he tapped his fingers against the stone armrest. "A fine warm-up."

Before the blood on the floor could even cool, a high-pitched, rhythmic clicking sound resonated beneath the stone slabs.

Thousands of palm-sized Arachne spider-scouts and large, multi-legged brood-weavers poured out from subterranean vents along the walls like a dark, mechanical tide. Working with frightening, perfected efficiency, the drones swept the Plaza of Death.

Within minutes, they stripped the ruined, spiky rot-chitin armor from the corpses, segregating the metals into storage bins. Hundreds of small spider-scouts carved out the glowing, uncorrupted monster cores from the beasts' chests, carrying them off in silk-wrapped bundles to be processed for Caius's advancement. Finally, massive brood-weavers dragged the skeletal remains into central piles, where a squad of Crow mages doused them in streams of white-gold cleansing fire, burning the rot to pure, odorless white ash.

In less than ten minutes, the horseshoe arena was completely clear, the stone floor gleaming wet and empty.

The Arachne Princess leaned over Caius’s shoulder, her eight jewel-like eyes gleaming with hungry delight as she clicked her pedipalps.

"The stage is clean, my King..." she purred softly into his ear. "Shall we call for the second course?"
