Pei Xiuhai let out a dark laugh.

"I’ve also heard that you’ve made some terrible decisions in the past."

Lu Yucai froze for a moment, seemingly unable to believe what he had just heard.

Pei Xiuhai, however, was secretly pleased.

He recalled a vague rumor he had heard from a soldier who had joined Fair Shallow Land after previously serving under Lu Yucai.

According to that soldier, Lu Yucai had once made a disastrous decision that resulted in the deaths of several people. The incident had eventually developed into a major scandal, costing Lu Yucai his position at the time.

Pei Xiuhai hadn’t paid much attention to the rumor back then. However, seeing Lu Yucai’s reaction now, he couldn’t help laughing inwardly.

’Perfect. It seems that rumor might actually be true.’

He immediately began thinking about reporting the matter to the base leader. If he could use Lu Yucai’s past against him, he might finally get him removed from his position.

"Anyway, if you’re incapable of making decisions, you shouldn’t walk around acting as though you’re the only person who knows how to make the right ones."

With that, Pei Xiuhai turned and walked away.

Once outside, he headed straight toward the command office.

He made no effort to conceal his hostility. Although he had initially considered himself capable of leading the military, Lu Yucai’s sudden appointment had taken that opportunity away from him.

Perhaps he might even have respected Lu Yucai if the latter hadn’t had such a questionable past.

Pei Xiuhai genuinely believed that allowing Lu Yucai to lead the army was dangerous. If the man repeated the same mistakes he had supposedly made before, Fair Shallow Land’s military could suffer devastating losses or even be wiped out entirely.

With that thought in mind, he began filing complaints.

By the time he finished, he had submitted more than ten separate complaints against Lu Yucai.

After completing her research, Ni Mengxue returned to her office and began reviewing the reports submitted to her.

When she came across Pei Xiuhai’s complaints, her brows furrowed.

’Isn’t this a little too much?’

Pei Xiuhai had clearly gone overboard.

She couldn’t help worrying about Lu Yucai. For a moment, she even considered visiting him to see how things were going.

However, before she could make a decision, Lu Yucai arrived at their home.

Ni Mengxue immediately approached him. She gently cupped his face in her hands and studied his tired expression.

"What happened? You look exhausted. Did someone say something to you?"

Lu Yucai looked at her.

Perhaps he would have hidden such matters from her in the past, but things were different now. He no longer wanted to keep anything from her.

He spoke softly.

"The soldiers aren’t listening to me. They’re too divided, and there’s too much discord within the military."

Ni Mengxue frowned.

"Do you want me to give them a warning?"

Lu Yucai shook his head and pulled her into his arms.

Lu Yucai held Ni Mengxue gently and spoke in a low voice.

"You know, I’m still afraid that I’ll make the wrong decision. I’m still struggling with a lot of negative emotions. Before, I might genuinely have wanted to give up on everything. But now, Mengxue, I want to give us a chance."

The moment Ni Mengxue had become so domineering, Lu Yucai had felt his heart pounding uncontrollably. For the first time in a long while, he had felt the urge to give this world another chance. He wanted to give himself another chance, too.

He hadn’t completely overcome his negative thoughts, but at least now he wanted to try.

Ni Mengxue looked at him and asked, "Then, should I give those soldiers a warning?"

Lu Yucai shook his head.

"There’s no need. A warning might not be effective. If they’re already determined to make things difficult for me, words won’t change their minds. I want to show them what I’m capable of and earn their respect through my actions."

Ni Mengxue’s eyes flickered as she looked at the confidence radiating from him.

He was so damn attractive at that moment that she couldn’t stop herself. Leaning forward, she kissed him.

Lu Yucai responded with equal passion.

It would have been a lie to claim that he didn’t have feelings for Ni Mengxue. He had long since fallen for her, and this time, he didn’t hold himself back.

After they finally pulled apart, Ni Mengxue looked at him with a playful smile.

"I never thought you could be so wild."

Lu Yucai gazed into her eyes and replied in a dreamy voice, "I can be even wilder if you give me the chance."

Ni Mengxue suddenly wished her period would end immediately. She couldn’t help cursing this troublesome body.

’Damn this body!’

It had a serious menstrual disorder. What should have lasted seven days at most had now stretched beyond twelve days. She had already tried looking for a solution and even asked the system whether it had any medicine available.

Unfortunately, the system had informed her that the medicine-buying department wouldn’t unlock until she reached Level Five.

All she could do was sigh and wait.

Although she had basic medical knowledge, treating the condition would still require at least six months of strict management before it could be completely cured. Back in her interstellar world, even an SCP-rated medical condition like this was entirely treatable. However, finding a solution in her current circumstances was proving much more difficult.

While she was lost in thought, Lu Yucai hugged her again, burying his head against her lap as he held her hand.

"Mengxue, once we have our baby, I’ll resign from my position."

Ni Mengxue immediately straightened and pulled away slightly. She looked at him seriously.

"There’s no need for that. We can both take care of our children."

However, Lu Yucai shook his head.

"I love my career, of course, but I would love having a child even more. Besides, you’re the best person to lead this base. You’ll be busy managing everything, so I’ll take care of our children during that time."
