Child of Destiny

Chapter 2221 - 2221: Siege of the Oath City

...

Alucard, who was assigned to be the commanding personnel of the West Wall of the city, wanted to complain about his current position.

Unfortunately, he could not do anything about it since Diablo, who was one of the strongest among the people guarding this side, had to focus on defending the walls instead. After all, one of them was a marksman, who could fight from a long distance, while the other was a thief, who focused more on assassination.

Watching the army of demonic creatures marching toward the city walls, Alucard squinted his eyes a little before raising his hand. "Range players, get ready!"

Following his command, everyone immediately made their move.

Gunners, particularly the Snipers and Gunslingers, positioned themselves at the cut-out sections of the top walls and took their aim.

The Archers were slightly behind them, nocking their arrows at the bow before aiming upwards for an arc trajectory for their attacks.

Mages, who were standing on a much elevated platform, started chanting their spells and prepared them ahead of time.

Alucard squinted his eyes, gauging the distance of the opposing forces and waiting for them to reach the most ideal distance for their attack. After all, it would be a waste of mana and energy if their attack missed their targets because of the distance.

The first wave of the attack was one of the important factors when dealing with siege battles.

If the defenders were able to chunk out a large number of their opponents, they would have a much easier time protecting the city walls.

On the other hand, if the attacking side managed to get near the walls without losing much of their forces, then they would have more people attacking the walls and put more pressure on the opposing side.

However, these were just one of the main aspects of siege battles. Issues like how to climb the walls or destroy the gates were also one of these aspects. Most of the time, siege tools and weapons were used on these occasions, such as traditional long ladders and siege towers for climbing or battering rams for attacking the gates.

There was also the involvement of more offensive siege weapons that could either destroy the walls or annihilate the opposing side through firepower – ballista, catapult, trebuchet, mangonel, and even magic cannons fell into this category.

This was how a regular siege took place. Unfortunately, this was not an ordinary battle since the opposing side were demons.

They did not use any tools to climb those walls, since they could just use their sharp claws to dig into them during the climb or attack from a distance with their powerful demonic spells.

On the other hand, it was quite unfortunate for the Oath City to have any defensive siege weapons to protect itself. After all, it was nothing but an inferior capital city of a remote and small kingdom.

This was why gauging the distance was extremely important for the first collision.

"Hold your fire!" Alucard remained calm, especially when the current situation triggered all the knowledge and training that he had been doing in the real world.

As someone who hailed from a military background, situations like these were extremely normal.

He completely ignored the tension in the air, especially when he understood that he had put a proper rein over everyone, particularly their emotions.

There were a few impatient ones who wanted to launch their attacks as soon as possible, but they managed to restrain themselves after recalling the identity of their current commander.

That guy was one of the famous members of the Empyrean Talons, which was filled with monstrous individuals and freaks of nature. Moreover, he was one of the strongest ones among the group, so they did not dare to outright question his methods and decisions.

When Alucard finally saw the opposing side step into a certain invisible line, he finally issued his command. "Marksmen, fire!"

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

Having waited for this command for what felt like a decade, everyone immediately unleashed a barrage of attacks without holding anything back.

Boom!

Trails of light produced by magic bullets and magic arrows hailed from the sky and started bombarding the incoming horde of demonic creatures.

Even if not all the attacks could kill most of these enemies within an instant, the continuous barrage of bullets and arrows made them fall one after another.

Roar! Roar! Roar!

Regardless, the horde of demonic monsters still maintained the majority of their momentum, charging straight at the city walls as fast and aggressively as they could.

Seeing that they had finally reached the second invisible in Alucard's eyes, which was also within the range of the mages.

"Mages, now!" Alucard then immediately signaled all the mages to release all their spells, who then released their magic and sent out multiple magical attacks at once.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Boom! Boom! Boom!

As the class of mass destruction, their attacks were much more destructive and covered a much larger area. In turn, their spells killed a much larger number of demonic creatures, further weakening their forces.

Unfortunately, the opposing side had extremely overwhelming numbers, which still managed to break through the barrage of spells that were even resonating with one another and supposed to further strengthen each other.

Roar! Roar! Roar!

The marksmen and mages were already feeling the pressure of these demonic creatures sprinting toward them when the situation had gotten even worse.

Shriek! Shriek! Shriek!

A flock of demonic birds and other flying demonic creatures appeared in the sky and flew straight to the walls.

Fortunately, no one panicked at the sudden development, making them hear the next commands from Alucard.

"Marksmen, step away from the crenels of the walls and focus on shooting down those disgusting birds! Knights and Berserkers, take over the position that they have left and prepare to throw down anyone who climbs the wall!"

"First to Third Mage Units, continue firing at the horde on the ground. Fourth and Sixth Mage Units, help the marksmen deal with those flying demons! The rest will remain on standby and wait for the other units to run out of mana!"

"Priests, cast barrier and repel evil to protect everyone and prevent anyone from getting caught by those flying demons!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Roar!

Shriek!

The battle raged on, becoming much more intense as time went by.

Due to the diverted attention of the mages, the firepower directed on the ground had greatly weakened, giving the demonic creatures there the opportunity to find gaps in their attacks and finally reach the city walls.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

From there, they started using different methods to climb the walls. Some used their sharp claws to dig into the concrete wall and made their way to the top whale others used some sticky substance that made them stuck on the wall before climbing up. The rest then piled up together until they built up a rampart high enough to reach the top of the walls.

Roar! Roar! Roar!

Bang! Bang! Bang!

From then on, the knights, berserkers, swordsmen, thieves, and any other melee class took over the stage. They started fighting against the demonic creatures that were attempting to climb, either killing them with the best of their abilities or throwing and pushing them down the city walls.

The situation was quite chaotic, but it was not that dire yet. At the very least, the side of the players was still holding on despite all the pressure that they were facing.

"Who would think that you would have some talent at commanding troops?" commented Diablo after seeing Alucard busied himself with commanding everyone.

The corner of Alucard's mouth could not help but twitch when he heard this before replying. "It is just a regular tactic used in siege battles. There is nothing special about it."

He then gave the other party a deep frown before asking. "I seem to remember that you have quite an important job. Aren't you supposed to hunt the remaining demonic players hiding within the horde?"

"It is fine. They have not made any moves yet, especially when it is still too early for them to make their appearance," replied Diablo while observing the ongoing battle.

"I will be lending you a hand here at least until that shrimp (Mister Jiang) and his people have found the core altar," he added.

Hearing this, Alucard could not help but ask. "Are you sure about that one? Given that you guys have already scaled through the entire regions surrounding the Oath City, and have yet to find any traces of it, I doubt that this so-called main altar exists."

"Hades and Poseidon seem to have agreed to this conclusion as well," he added with a solemn tone.

"No. There is still a place that we have yet to check-…" Diablo paused for a moment before correcting himself. "…-or should I say 'overlooked'. And this time, it is surely the place that we are looking for."
