Chapter 1157: Vice Commanders [GT Ranking Bonus Chapter]
"This way," the General stated, then took a step and blurred forward. He didn’t fly this time, as though flight was forbidden up here. As they ran through the buildings, Asher’s eyes fell on other Generals and various Captains moving through the area.
After a moment, they got to another building that had five floors. They stepped inside and ran up the stairs instead of walking before finally reaching the topmost floor. Asher and the General walked down what seemed to be a hallway before arriving at an average-sized door.
"You may go in without knocking," the General instructed, then turned and walked away, as he was done with his duties.
Asher pushed open the door and stepped inside with a calm expression. The moment he entered, his eyes fell on five people who turned their gazes towards him before he could even take in the room. Among the five people present, two of them were bald, while the other three had hair on their heads.
There was a singular table within the expansive room, along with three chairs. One was positioned at the end of the table and reserved for the owner of the chamber, while the other two were reserved for visitors. The walls held nothing: no paintings, no shelves containing ornaments and vases, or anything else. It was simply a plain room with a table and three chairs.
’What’s with Crownstar Life Rankers and not designing their offices?’ Asher thought to himself. ’I guess old age makes them desensitized to material things,’ he concluded.
Among the five people within the room, one wore a white uniform, with six stars visible on the left side of his chest. He had black hair, black pupils, and a handsome face. He was none other than Commander Damian Wargrave, the sole Overlord of the Algorith Frontier.
He sat with three people behind him, all of whom wore black uniforms with five stars on the left side of their chests. Two were men, while the other was a woman. Of the two men, one was bald. They were the Vice Commanders of the Algorith Frontier, and they answered only to the Commander.
As for the final person within the room, it was none other than Saitama Silverleaf. He sat opposite Damian, as he had been summoned as well. This was why the blue-haired General had been at the Cadet residence, as he had simply been waiting for Asher.
Stepping forward, Asher bowed and greeted them in the same way he had greeted the blue-haired General.
"I greet the Commander and Vice Commanders." His tone was calm and respectful, as usual, whenever he acknowledged someone’s Rank.
At his words, Damian’s black eyes remained on Asher for a moment before he replied, "Although we are meeting in an official capacity, you can go ahead and throw that formality of yours through the window. Family are the only ones here." A smile appeared on his lips as he added, "You can just call me Uncle Damian when we are alone or with these people." His tone was cool and welcoming.
Asher couldn’t help but stare at him in slight confusion. He had never spoken to Damian before, so he wondered where this sudden familiarity was coming from. But unknown to Asher, it was simply how Damian was. He wasn’t really a sucker for rules and formalities. If it weren’t for his three Vice Commanders, he might have run his own Frontier into the ground, logistically speaking.
’Also, isn’t the Third Elder from Grandfather’s generation? I should be calling him Granduncle or something along those lines,’ Asher thought to himself, but he never said anything on the matter, as it didn’t really matter to him.
His eyes shifted towards the three Vice Commanders behind Damian. As though sensing Asher’s gaze, Damian introduced them.
"This is Michaelson Novrak," he said, gesturing towards one of the Vice Commanders.
Gesturing towards the female Vice Commander, he continued, "And this is Vanessa Thorne."
The woman had red eyes and pink hair. She simply smiled and nodded at him.
Damian gestured towards the second male Vice Commander, who was bald, and spoke. "And this is Ryuk Silverleaf."
The man nodded his head with a smile on his face, a katana hanging from his waist.
"These three are my right hand throughout the Frontier. I’ve known them since my days at the Star Academy, as we were all in the same class," Damian explained calmly. "All in all, they can be considered minor friends," he added.
Vanessa Thorne rolled her eyes as she spoke. "Minor friends, my ass. Even major friends wouldn’t do the amount of work I do. I don’t get paid enough."
Ryuk Silverleaf turned towards her as he spoke. "It’s not too late to quit and join another Frontier, you know."
Vanessa’s eyes snapped towards Ryuk as she spoke. "Shut it, baldy. Nobody was talking to you."
Ryuk shrugged as he spoke. "You’ve been using that name since we were at the Star Academy, which was almost three centuries ago. I hope you don’t think it still gets to me."
"Hmph! I helped build this Frontier from the ground up, and you just want me to leave? In your dreams," Vanessa Thorne followed up, seemingly uncaring whether the name baldy still worked against Ryuk or not.
Asher simply watched them as he walked forward and sat beside Saitama. He then spoke, "So, your father is a Vice Commander. No wonder you seem to know this place better than the rest of us."
"And your uncle is the Commander," Saitama replied, as though it was nothing special that his father was a Vice Commander.
Asher didn’t say anything else. He turned towards Damian, who wore a tired expression as Ryuk and Vanessa bickered behind him.
’I guess one acts a certain way with friends, no matter how old they are,’ Asher thought to himself. He was sure that if he saw Vanessa outside, she would carry herself with a calm demeanor.
But here, she was arguing like a child, with the two of them going back and forth.
"Want to have a go?" Ryuk Silverleaf asked as he placed a hand on his katana, his demeanor changing into that of a sharp sword capable of cutting through anything.
Vanessa Thorne smirked as she replied, "This won’t be like two decades ago, when we ended in a draw." A thorn whip appeared in her hand, as though she was ready to start the fight right there.
"Can the both of you cut it out? There are children right here," Michaelson Novrak stated with a calm demeanor, as though he were the elder brother while Vanessa and Ryuk were the juniors.
The two of them stared at each other for a moment before breaking eye contact and refusing to push the matter any further.
Damian sighed, then focused his attention on Asher as he asked, "So, why did you join my Frontier?"
Personally, he was simply too curious. After all, his nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces had avoided this place as though it were a thorny rose of some sort.
Asher couldn’t understand why the man was asking this, but he replied nonetheless.
"Simply because I like your Calculator ability," he answered truthfully. "And I love the name of your Frontier, Algorith seems like the perfect fit," he added.
