Coiling Dragon: An Unconventional Transcendence.
Chapter 499: Prelude
Now that the Planar War had ended, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff had placed resolving the conflict between Linley and Light Chief Sovereign Augusta ahead of his battle with the Destruction Chief Sovereign.
Wasn't he making it obvious to everyone that he didn't take Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred seriously?
This, however, was indeed Orloff's oversight.
But Orloff had no choice.
Judging from the situation between Linley and Light Chief Sovereign Augusta just now, if he hadn't stepped in, Linley might really have attacked Augusta.
Thus, in the urgency of the moment, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff had put aside his battle with Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred in order to mediate the conflict between Linley and Light Chief Sovereign Augusta.
At the very least, he could stop Linley.
Orloff had already come to understand just how reckless Linley could be.
He had no intention of gambling one of his own lives on the possibility that Linley wouldn't attack Light Chief Sovereign Augusta.
"Linley, Augusta."
"I'm sorry, but the matter between the two of you will have to wait for a while."
"Of course, I also know that Chief Sovereign Linley is worried about that angel."
"Augusta, since I have stepped forward to mediate your dispute, that angel must eventually be handed over to Chief Sovereign Linley."
"Therefore, if Chief Sovereign Linley is concerned, you may go directly to the Light Divine Plane now and take that angel away."
"Afterward, return to the Celestial Realm, and then negotiate with Augusta over what price you should pay in exchange for Augusta granting that angel her freedom."
"What do you both think?"
Light Chief Sovereign Augusta's face darkened. He let out a cold snort.
"Hmph. I have no objections."
"But let me make one thing clear first. If Chief Sovereign Linley cannot offer a price that satisfies me, then I'm sorry—I can have that angel commit suicide at any time."
"Very well."
Linley nodded in agreement, then gratefully said to Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff,
"Lord Orloff, thank you."
After speaking, Linley transformed into a streak of yellow light and flew toward the Light Divine Plane.
Watching Linley depart, both Light Chief Sovereign Augusta and Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff inwardly breathed sighs of relief.
It couldn't be helped.
Although Augusta had spoken boldly earlier, he had genuinely feared that Linley would attack him regardless of the consequences.
It was precisely because of this that Augusta did not object when Orloff suggested allowing Linley to retrieve Lina first.
Indeed, among the angels, Lina was one of the few powerful angels with the strength of a Seven Star Fiend, second only to the angel commander who possessed the strength of a Prefect-level expert.
But to Augusta, Lina was not particularly important.
Angels with the strength of a Prefect were indeed extraordinarily rare, appearing perhaps only once in countless trillions of years.
However, angels at the Seven Star Fiend level would still appear two or three times every hundred million years or so.
Using a Seven Star Fiend-level angel to temporarily stabilize Linley was, in Augusta's view, a very worthwhile trade.
Of course, there was an even more important reason.
If Augusta refused to hand Lina over, there was a very high chance that Linley would completely lose control and kill him outright.
But once Lina had been taken away by Linley, Linley would have a weakness.
Before making a move against Augusta, he would have to worry about whether Augusta would order Lina to kill herself.
After dealing with the ticking time bomb that was Linley, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff finally turned his attention toward Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred.
"What is it, Orloff? Are you still looking for another excuse to avoid fighting?"
Seeing that Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff had temporarily settled the dispute between Linley and Augusta, Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred raised the spear in his hand and pointed it directly at Orloff.
"Wodred, fighting an opponent of equal strength is something that excites me as well."
"It's just that earlier, I encountered a matter that absolutely had to be resolved first. That is why I kept you waiting for so long."
"Now that it has been temporarily settled, I naturally am willing to fight you."
"In that case..."
"Come!"
With those words, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff extended his hand.
A white Sovereign artifact sword appeared in his grasp.
Publicly, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff had completed two Overgod Missions, granting him both a soul-protecting Overgod artifact and a physical defense Overgod artifact.
The other Chief Sovereigns of the Edicts, Linley included, all possessed offensive Overgod artifacts.
Thus, among the Chief Sovereigns of the Edicts, Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff was the only one without an offensive Overgod artifact.
"Hmph!"
Seeing the Sovereign artifact in Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff's hand, Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred snorted coldly.
He put away the black Overgod artifact spear he had been holding and replaced it with another black spear that looked almost identical to the previous one.
However, the aura surrounding this black spear was over a hundred times weaker than that of the previous one.
Like the white sword in Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff's hand, this black spear was also a Sovereign artifact.
"Orloff, since you don't possess an offensive Overgod artifact, I won't take advantage of you."
"I'll fight you using only a Sovereign artifact."
Although Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff possessed both a soul-protecting Overgod artifact and a physical defense Overgod artifact, raising his defenses to the absolute limit...
...throughout the entire Magic Universe, aside from Chief Sovereign Locke, there was probably no one capable of killing Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff.
Even if Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred used an offensive Overgod artifact, the result would be the same.
However, Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred had his own pride.
Although he knew that even with an offensive Overgod artifact he could not kill Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff, the primary purpose of this battle was to test the progress he had made through his cultivation over the years.
If he used his offensive Overgod artifact, his attacks would become unimaginably powerful, leaving Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff no choice but to rely entirely on his physical defense Overgod artifact to withstand them.
Therefore, Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred directly put away his offensive Overgod artifact and chose to fight using only a Sovereign artifact spear, just like Orloff.
Only in this way could both sides' offensive capabilities be brought onto the same level, allowing him to truly measure his actual strength.
Of course, if this were a battle to the death, it would be a different matter entirely.
Destruction Chief Sovereign Wodred wasn't foolish enough to abandon his advantage in a life-and-death battle.
He acted this way only because Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff lacked an offensive Overgod artifact. Wodred was confident that no matter how strong Orloff might be, he would never force him into a situation where he didn't even have time to draw his offensive Overgod artifact.
"Haha. Since you're not using your offensive Overgod artifact, then there's no need for me to wear my physical defense Overgod artifact while fighting you either."
As he spoke, the white robes covering Fate Chief Sovereign Orloff's body instantly changed. It seemed that he had retracted his physical defense Overgod artifact into his body and replaced it with a robe that was merely a Sovereign artifact.
