Chapter 454: Chapter 232: Cable Car Accident?
"Xiaoxie’s physical exam results are excellent... It’s truly a miracle.
"That’s right, his complete blood count and five-panel chemistry screen are all within the standard range... Correct. His liver and kidney function, urinalysis, blood sugar, blood lipids, and blood pressure are all at normal levels. Not a single indicator is out of range.
"Yes, he now fully meets the criteria for discharge. Let me put it this way: in all my years as a doctor, this is the first time I’ve ever encountered someone this healthy. Most people have at least one or two indicators that are slightly off; that’s normal. For someone like Xiaoxie to have absolutely none is actually quite rare...
"No, it’s not that it’s abnormal. It was all analyzed by our equipment, so there’s no issue. Xiaoxie is remarkably healthy. His condition is much better now than it was before he woke up. To be honest, I can’t explain it either. Maybe it’s a blessing from the heavens? Haha, it’s not very professional for a doctor to say that, but sometimes modern medicine really can’t explain everything."
Inside the hospital room, the bespectacled attending physician patiently answered one after another of Xie Yuan’s mother’s questions. He showed no sign of impatience; in fact, he was beaming.
After all, having a patient awaken from a semi-vegetative state under his care was certainly something worth celebrating!
Wang Yafang held the various medical reports, reading them over and over. After caring for her son for so many days, she knew these reports like the back of her hand. She truly couldn’t find anything wrong, and she was overcome with excitement.
But she still had her doubts. How could her son, who had been unable to wake up and spent his days in the ICU, suddenly become healthier than an average person? Could there be a problem with the equipment?
The thought that this might be a false hope made her ask again, her voice tight with nervousness:
"Dr. Liu, are you sure your equipment isn’t broken?"
"It’s imported, meets national standards, and it’s the most advanced diagnostic machine we have—we just got it this year. There’s absolutely no problem with it."
Dr. Liu nodded emphatically.
He turned to look at Xie Yuan and said with a smile,
"Xiaoxie, after you’re discharged, you have to take good care of yourself. Be considerate of your parents, especially your mother. She’s been through so much taking care of you."
Xie Yuan looked at his mother, who was so much more haggard and gaunt than he remembered from his distant memories. He noticed the white hair that had suddenly appeared at her temples, and his nose tingled. He nodded repeatedly.
"I will. Dr. Liu... words aren’t enough to express my gratitude."
Dr. Liu chuckled.
"You sound like a hero from one of those martial arts stories, young man. Don’t worry about it; this is just my job. But after you’re discharged, remember to come in for regular follow-up checkups. And, if you don’t mind, there may be some interviews later... and some follow-up studies, for research. Don’t worry, it won’t be too frequent or interfere with your rest."
Seeing the hopeful look on Dr. Liu’s face, Xie Yuan nodded.
"No problem."
Just then, the door to the room swung open. A middle-aged man with thick glasses squeezed into the crowded space and began shaking hands with the surrounding medical staff.
"Thank you, thank you so much! Thank you!"
"Thank you all so much..."
The middle-aged man pushed his way to Xie Yuan’s bedside. An irrepressible smile broke across his otherwise reserved face.
"Are you all packed?"
Xie Yuan nodded.
"All packed, Dad. We can leave anytime."
"Alright!!"
The family of three packed up their bedding, thermos, washbasin, and everything else. Laden with bags of all sizes, they finally left the place they had called home for the past month.
When they reached the hospital entrance, the couple led Xie Yuan to a bus stop to wait for the number 3 bus.
His father, Xie Guoliang, hesitated for a moment, adjusted his glasses, and said softly,
"The car’s broken down for the past couple of days, so I’m afraid we’ll have to take the bus."
Xie Yuan smiled.
"Dad, what’s so hard about this? You and Mom are the ones who’ve had a tough time."
After smiling, he glanced at the route map on the bus stop sign and pursed his lips.
’I don’t remember our house being on the number 3 bus route.’
The bus arrived, and the three of them boarded. Xie Guoliang and Wang Yafang insisted on carrying everything, not letting Xie Yuan lift a single heavy object.
Xie Yuan was a little exasperated. He felt brimming with energy; he could have carried all their luggage by himself without breaking a sweat, but he was no match for his parents’ stubbornness.
Luckily, the bus wasn’t crowded, so they all found seats. The bus swayed along its route, and twenty minutes later, they were home.
But it wasn’t the home he remembered.
Staring at the unfamiliar, old-fashioned corridor-style apartment building before him, Xie Yuan fell silent and followed his parents up the narrow, gloomy staircase.
Xie Guoliang was a high school Chinese teacher. Now middle-aged, he didn’t exercise much, and carrying the large pile of luggage was already taking a toll on him.
He was standing on a landing, panting heavily, when the load on his back suddenly lightened. He turned in surprise to find that Xie Yuan had already taken both his and his wife’s bags and was now hoisting them onto his own back.
He said urgently,
"What are you doing? I can carry it. You..."
"Dad, what floor are we on? I’ll be up in a flash. If you keep talking, I’ll be too tired to move."
Xie Yuan cut him off.
Seeing his son’s decisive and calm demeanor, Xie Guoliang was taken aback. It felt a little... unfamiliar.
But he answered instinctively,
"Oh, right. Sixth floor, 602."
Hearing that, Xie Yuan started climbing, THUMP THUMP THUMP. Wang Yafang was still behind him, trying to steady the bags on his back.
"Mom, slow down! Stop pushing, I’ve got it."
He simply started taking the stairs three at a time and, in a flash, shot up to the door of 602. He stared at the rusty door number, his brow furrowed.
Two minutes later, Xie Guoliang and Wang Yafang finally made it up the stairs. When they saw Xie Yuan standing there, not even flushed or out of breath, they exchanged a look of pleasant surprise.
’It looks like our son has really made a full recovery... Is he even stronger than before?’
’The money we spent on the ICU wasn’t wasted.’
Wang Yafang took out her keys, opened the door, and let Xie Yuan go inside first.
Xie Yuan carried their things into the cramped, 1980s-style two-bedroom apartment. For some reason, the first thing he did was scan the surrounding walls.
’Hm, no holes in them.’
