Chen Xing glanced at the stairs. There were at least a few dozen people still up there.

So, she pretended to pull a heavy iron chain, the kind with a padlock, from her satchel. She tossed it to Carson. "Once everyone is inside, lock the door!"

With that, she pushed against the crowd and went up.

To anyone else, this was undoubtedly a suicide mission.

But for Chen Xing, it was a trivial matter.

These monsters seemed numerous, but they weren’t particularly lethal. She could handle them.

Reaching the top, Chen Xing successfully blocked all the monsters, buying time for the crowd to run down.

Carson was sweating with anxiety. Seeing that everyone was inside but Chen Xing was still up there, he shouted frantically, "Hurry back! You’re the only one left!"

"Lock the door and get out of here!" Chen Xing didn’t even turn her head as she began her slaughter.

She had noticed long ago that there were no security cameras in this place.

That was why the patrol team had dared to lock the doors so brazenly.

It was only a few dozen Lizard Monsters, so it wasn’t difficult for Chen Xing to kill them.

But she couldn’t hold out against the constant flood of monsters. She worried that if this dragged on, she would attract the patrol team.

So, with a flick of her hand, she killed the few Lizard Monsters in front of her, collected their Crystal Cores, and ran downstairs.

Carson, who she thought had already left, was still there. Seeing her return, he immediately unlocked the chained door.

Once Chen Xing was inside, he locked it again.

The Lizard Monsters were quite adept at killing people, but they weren’t strong enough to break down the heavy iron door.

Chen Xing and Carson immediately vanished from the Lizard Monsters’ sight.

All the exits were blocked. People were crowded at their respective entrances, shouting.

What could all that shouting do besides attract more monsters?

Seeing that these people were no longer in immediate danger, Chen Xing didn’t feel the need to step up.

She went to find her own exit.

There were quite a few people at her exit, too, pounding on the door and crying.

’Looks like going this way isn’t wise, either.’

Carson had been following Chen Xing the whole time. When he saw her hesitate instead of approaching the exit, he understood that she couldn’t get out either.

He pointed ahead. "My place is in a remote area, so there probably aren’t many people. Do you want to come with me and hide out for a bit? Don’t worry, I mean you no harm!"

Chen Xing agreed that she needed to hide.

’I just killed so many monsters; someone is bound to notice this area soon.’

So she followed the young Black man.

His home was indeed remote.

It was at the northernmost edge of the city. As they got closer, there was almost no one around.

The exit was sealed.

Perhaps because they knew that not even monsters bothered coming this way, the lock wasn’t very heavy-duty.

Chen Xing gave it a pull and it opened. She locked it again behind them.

After going up three floors and through a small corridor, they entered a large building.

The building was clean, much better than the place Chen Xing was renting.

After opening the door to the innermost apartment on the fourth floor, Chen Xing saw a living room that was surprisingly large.

"Before the apocalypse, I was a basketball player, so my family was pretty well-off," Carson explained. "This area is a bit remote and not many people live here, so you can stay here without worry."

Chen Xing looked at the huge poster on the wall.

The Carson in the photo seemed to have more meat on his bones, unlike the gaunt man he was now.

"I’m sorry, besides water, I don’t have anything to offer you," Carson said, a little embarrassed.

He was truly on his last legs, about to run out of food and supplies.

He had no other choice today but to go out and see if he could find a way to get some food.

It was hard to even find work now, especially for him as a Black man.

Racial discrimination hadn’t improved even in the apocalypse; in fact, it had gotten worse.

He had originally planned to go home and find something else he could trade, but he’d almost lost his life on the way.

Chen Xing took out a number of items from her satchel and placed them on the table.

Carson was speechless.

He grew even more embarrassed.

Chen Xing pushed a red bean bun into his hands. "It’s fine. We’re in this together."

Carson accepted her kind offer.

His place was much better than her rental.

It had running water and electricity.

Carson gave her a bedroom where everything inside was brand new.

The night passed without incident.

The next day, however, Chen Xing came out to find Carson staring at his phone with a grim expression.

Chen Xing was still in her Baling woman disguise. "What’s wrong?"

Carson handed her the phone. "I don’t know who it was, but someone recorded you killing the monsters. The Great Commander has issued a notice for your arrest!"

They had a city-wide network where they could see the latest news at any time. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

"You were helping everyone, but the Great Commander says you harmed the public interest? What kind of Great Commander is he? When we were in danger, I didn’t see him send any troops to save us. But when someone does step up to help, suddenly they’re in the wrong?"

Chen Xing was used to this sort of thing and wasn’t angry at all.

’It’s not like this is the first time I’ve been a wanted person, anyway.’

’Looks like... it’s time for me to show my true face.’

’I haven’t been able to find Hao Wenli after all this time. The only thing to do is make her come find me!’

Chen Xing changed her clothes and emerged with her Eastern features revealed. "Actually, I’m from the East..." She didn’t elaborate, only saying that she was here looking for someone.

To avoid causing trouble for Carson, she prepared to leave immediately.

But how could Carson be the type of person to forget a kindness?

He figured she must have had an important reason for changing her identity to get in, so he said, "It’s dangerous for you to go out like this. Hide here for a couple of days. These notices will die down soon."

Chen Xing didn’t stand on ceremony.

During this time, her rental apartment was searched several times.
