Chapter 216 - 213: Grand Canyon
Chapter 216: Chapter 213: Grand Canyon
That guy, Song Yiguo, had heard about some rare species and sent her here without even figuring out what it was.
He said he’d get in touch with her after receiving more information.
But deep in these mountains, cell phones had no signal. Since she arrived, they hadn’t been in contact at all.
Naturally, they still had no idea what that rare species was.
’Who would have thought it was that Little Grass?’
That thing could make someone lose all their abilities in an instant. Who could possibly get close?
In that case, she had no reason to hide it. "It’s a stalk of Little Grass..."
She even considerately described what the Little Grass looked like.
The other party was moved to tears with gratitude.
Perhaps because of the noise, a team of about a hundred people soon found them.
The team was from a small country in Southeast Asia, led by a forty-year-old woman named Buma.
Dressed in a military uniform, she had a valiant and heroic air about her.
Her skin, likely from constant sun exposure, was a healthy-looking bronze.
The two parties briefly exchanged information.
Buma’s team had only been in the mountains for a day. Aside from finding desiccated corpses, they hadn’t encountered anything else out of the ordinary.
When she heard that everyone was looking for a stalk of Little Grass, she expressed her thanks. "This electric fence of yours, is it to protect against that special Little Grass?"
When Chen Xing confirmed it was, Buma immediately ordered her people to find metal objects.
The next few days were different from before.
They frequently ran into other teams, all of whom now had their own electric fences, and the casualty rate dropped significantly.
They had expected to encounter the Little Grass often, but their team never saw it again.
They saw Buma’s team again several days later.
Chen Xing’s trio arrived at the edge of the Grand Canyon.
It was their first time in this area.
They thought they had already combed through the entire mountain forest several times, yet they had still somehow missed this place.
Looking down from the edge of the Grand Canyon, they saw fields of grass.
Chen Xing was speechless. ’It’s all that Little Grass, the kind that drains all of a person’s abilities.’
’If anyone goes down there, they’ll be torn to shreds, won’t they!?’
Just then, she spotted Buma’s team standing on the opposite side of the canyon.
The other team saw them too and gave them a nod.
Both sides then began making preparations to descend and retrieve the Little Grass.
Buma’s team had more people, so they started their operation immediately.
Their plan was to have someone rappel into the canyon, grab a Little Grass, and be pulled up before they passed out.
But it was easier said than done.
Several people tried and failed to grab any of the Little Grass.
In the end, they had to send down a speed-type Superpower User.
This time, he successfully grabbed a Little Grass.
Buma immediately ordered her team to pull the Superpower User up.
But just as he was being pulled halfway up, a long vine shot out from the canyon wall.
By the time Chen Xing shouted a warning, it was too late.
The rope snapped, and the Superpower User was dragged into the canyon, vanishing in an instant.
Buma immediately sent another person down.
Chen Xing wanted to stop them. She had seen the stalk of Little Grass wither just a few seconds after it was pulled from the soil.
Just then, another team appeared on a different side of the canyon, catching her attention.
It was a team from the United States military, and their leader, to her surprise, was Cadar.
She was wearing a red qipao and black leather boots. Standing out against the sea of green, she drew everyone’s gaze.
When she saw Chen Xing, a flicker of wariness entered her eyes.
Ever since the Hao Wenli incident, she had been curious how Chen Xing managed to survive such a devastating event.
Her former disdain had turned to caution; she no longer dared to underestimate her.
Still, that didn’t mean she liked her.
The various teams set up camp and began the work of harvesting the Little Grass.
A few days passed and more teams arrived, but none of them could successfully retrieve the Little Grass.
Chen Xing’s team, however, didn’t make a move. They just watched quietly.
They would wait for a team to succeed and then copy their method.
They had plenty of supplies and protection, so they weren’t worried about the delay.
No one knew that danger was slowly closing in.
The vine, having gone many days without absorbing any energy, was growing agitated. It was no longer content to wait for the Little Grass to do its work.
It slowly extended its long tendrils toward the teams camped by the canyon.
Instantly, screams and cries for help erupted around the canyon.
Everyone was so focused on getting the Little Grass that no one bothered to look.
Chen Xing’s trio, however, wanted to see what was happening and rushed over.
They saw countless long vines slaughtering a team of over a hundred, leaving only a few survivors.
The screaming had lasted less than a minute...
The electric fence was completely destroyed; it seemed to be useless.
Chen Xing didn’t approach. Instead, she picked an empty spot and threw a few bombs in that direction.
The vines quickly retreated, allowing a few people to escape with their lives.
The survivors’ faces were etched with terror. "Th-thank you!" they stammered, their hearts still pounding with fear.
It had all happened in the blink of an eye...
They had gathered together, worried it would be dangerous to spread out. How could they have imagined the vines would attack them?
"I think the electric fence only works on the Little Grass. It’s not powerful enough to hurt the vines!" Xiao Long speculated.
Chen Xing thought so too.
About ten minutes after the three of them returned to their camp, more cries for help came from another direction.
This team was farther away. By the time Chen Xing and her companions arrived, there were no survivors.
A quick count revealed it had also been a team of over a hundred people.
In the time that followed, teams were attacked intermittently.
By the end of the day, nearly all of the larger teams had been attacked.
For safety, the few remaining teams banded together with others.
When they woke up the next day, almost every team around the Grand Canyon had been attacked by the vines, with the exception of a few of the very largest groups.
The United States team and Buma’s team were also attacked, but both were powerful and equipped with heavy weaponry, so they didn’t suffer too badly.
"How come the vines haven’t come for us?" Wen Yan found it a little odd, not that he was hoping they would.
"The vines only attack large groups!" Chen Xing finally understood why the three of them had been safe this whole time.
’On the first night, the Little Grass approached us while we slept. I’m not sure if it succeeded or failed, but there were definitely other, much larger teams nearby at the time.’
’So we were lucky the vines didn’t consider us worth their while.’
’Maybe two or three people aren’t even a snack for the vines?’
’After all, it must absorb a significant amount of energy each time it feeds.’
As the number of teams dwindled and the vines attacked with increasing impunity, the remaining groups grew desperate.
Everyone was trying all sorts of methods, desperate to get just one Little Grass to take back with them.
Just then, Chen Xing’s attention was drawn to Buma’s team.
There was a young man in his early twenties. He wasn’t tall and had a fair-skinned face that didn’t look like it was from Southeast Asia.
He stood at the canyon’s edge and extended his palm toward the grassy fields below.
As he pulled his hand back, a stalk of Little Grass materialized in his palm.
