Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 310 - 307: You Remind Me of an Old Friend
Chapter 310: Chapter 307: You Remind Me of an Old Friend
After seizing the supplies, half the Superpower Users had left to escort the goods.
Song Yiguo, wanting to leave nothing to chance, had immediately called for another group of Superpower Users.
This would not only ensure their safety but also provide enough manpower to handle any other valuable items they might find.
But... there was now a very serious problem.
Namely, the supplies they had on hand were scarce—nowhere near enough to feed so many people.
Chen Xing glanced at her own pitifully small storage space.
’If this were my old space,’ she thought, ’the overflowing bounty of ripe fruits and vegetables alone would have been enough to feed these people for days.’
Left with no other choice, she took a few Superpower Users to a dilapidated, empty building and secretly took out everything from Cheng Fang’s storage space.
It didn’t look like much, but if they were frugal, it would be enough to feed Song Yiguo’s team for three days.
The Superpower Users couldn’t believe they had found so many supplies in a random, dilapidated building.
That night, snow blanketed the sky, burying the ground under a full meter of powder.
Song Yiguo’s Superpower Team was endlessly grateful to Chen Xing.
If she hadn’t found so many supplies, they feared they would have starved to death in the blizzard.
Chen Xing stood by the window, gazing at the snow-covered landscape.
’Weather like this, with snow falling so heavily, is perfect for hiding in a warm room, wrapped in a blanket and sipping hot coffee.’
Song Yiguo had been invited out early that morning and wasn’t around.
She heard the door of the adjacent room open.
A few seconds later, voices echoed from the hallway.
Then, a knock came at her door. "Xing Yue, Bishop Louis requests to see you!"
Chen Xing slipped on a padded jacket and turned off the heater, which had been cranked up high.
She controlled the power, and it was limited to her room.
Lou was dressed in heavy clothing, followed by a soldier carrying a case.
He first gave Chen Xing a gentlemanly bow. "Forgive the intrusion."
The soldier followed him inside, placed the case on the table, and then reluctantly left the room.
Their quarters were like an icebox, a stark contrast to the warmth here.
It seemed even clergymen were susceptible to the cold. As Bishop Louis entered the room, he was enveloped in a wave of heat that brought a rosy flush to his cheeks.
He pushed the case forward. "Here are the remaining five hundred Advanced Crystal Cores. Once again, I thank you, Lady Xing Yue, for saving my life."
"Alright." Chen Xing accepted it gladly.
She didn’t care what his motives were.
All that mattered was that she had the Crystal Cores in hand.
A thousand Crystal Cores wasn’t a huge amount to her, but... if she couldn’t return, it would be enough to trade for a considerable amount of supplies.
"I wonder if Lady Xing Yue has any intention of joining another team? If so, we would welcome you with open arms. We would do our utmost to meet any and all of your requests." Having finally found an opportunity, Lou naturally tried to recruit her.
Song Yiguo kept a tight watch on her, making it difficult to find a chance to speak with Chen Xing alone.
"Song Yiguo won’t let me leave," Chen Xing said, using him as a convenient excuse.
Lou’s expression fell.
’He’s right,’ Lou thought. ’Who would let such a treasure go?’
’It seems pretending to be bitten by a zombie just to get close to her has yielded no progress, aside from exchanging a few more words than anyone else. Instead, I’m out one thousand Advanced Crystal Cores.’
’Still... just getting acquainted with her is significant progress in itself.’
’Given time, I’m confident I can convince her to join our team willingly.’
After Lou left, Chen Xing put the Crystal Cores away.
She had other plans for these thousand Crystal Cores.
However, before she could even sit down, there was another knock on the door. "Xing Yue, Miss Cheng Fang is here to see you!"
Chen Xing was speechless. ’Is she here to confirm if I’m... me?’
After a moment’s pause, she opened the door, her expression a mask of indifference.
Cheng Fang’s face was deathly pale, the pain from her severed finger apparently still tormenting her.
"What is it?" Her tone was dismissive and cold.
Cheng Fang flinched the moment she heard her voice.
’The voice... it’s exactly like Chen Xing’s...’
’How is that possible?’
Cheng Fang blinked, her mind reeling. "You, you... You remind me so much of an old friend!"
’Old friend?’
’If the time were right, I’d spit in her face.’
"Then you must be mistaken," Chen Xing said curtly, moving to close the door.
"Ah—" In her haste, Cheng Fang used her injured hand to block the door.
The sudden movement sent a jolt of pain so intense that sweat began to stream down her face.
Chen Xing glanced at the bandaged hand. It seemed to have been treated.
But... tragically, the finger hadn’t been reattached.
"Your name is Xing Yue, right?" Enduring the pain and her anger, Cheng Fang maintained a pleasant demeanor.
Chen Xing simply looked at her without speaking, a silent confirmation.
"You’re so much like a friend of mine, really! So... I can’t help but feel drawn to you." Cheng Fang broke into a disarmingly charming smile.
It was precisely that smile that had made Chen Xing act like a fool, following her for so many years only to be betrayed and killed in the end.
"I don’t like making friends." Chen Xing’s tone was lukewarm, but her words created an impassable distance.
’How could this tactic not be working?’ Cheng Fang wondered.
’But... in that one moment, she knew. The person standing before her was definitely not the Chen Xing she remembered.’
’That Chen Xing was a weak, brainless fool. She would never have dared to speak to anyone with such an arrogant tone.’
Just as the situation grew awkward, a door down the hall opened and Cadar stepped out.
Her complexion was also terrible. Her eyes were sunken, as if she hadn’t slept at all.
Seeing Cheng Fang shamelessly trying to cozy up to someone, she couldn’t help but taunt, "She clearly doesn’t want a friend like you, yet you’re still so thick-skinned. Did you do something to wrong that ’old friend’ of yours? Are you trying to absolve your guilt with this one?"
Cadar’s words struck a nerve, piercing straight through Cheng Fang’s composure.
"Miss Cadar, I was just looking for you!" Cheng Fang ignored the taunt.
’Since the other items are gone, I have to keep searching for the remaining jewelry.’
Cadar had only stepped out to let off some steam; she never expected Cheng Fang to have the gall to approach her.
After all, they’d had a massive fight just recently.
"What good could possibly come from you looking for me?" Despite her words, Cadar remained in the hallway.
Cheng Fang wanted to go into her room to talk privately, but Cadar refused. "Say what you have to say out here."
"I want to know about that necklace you mentioned. Where did you see it?"
"Come in and we’ll talk." Seeing Cheng Fang’s interest in the necklace, Cadar stepped aside to let her in.
’Just because I can’t find it doesn’t mean someone else can’t.’
’Maybe Cheng Fang will find it. And when she does, I’ll be the one waiting to swoop in.’
Chen Xing immediately went back into her room.
More than anyone, she needed information about that necklace.
After turning invisible, she moved onto the balcony.
It was an open-air balcony, separated from the next one by about two meters.
There was another balcony between hers and the one belonging to Cadar’s room.
With a running start, Chen Xing planted a foot on the railing and leaped effortlessly to the adjacent balcony.
However, her landing made a slight noise. Inside the room, the tightly drawn curtains parted just a crack, revealing a face.
