Halfway through his words, Shen Chongxu suddenly realized something was wrong.

Since it was his son who wanted to see him, why hadn’t he come along?

Shen Chongming’s lips moved a few times before he sighed and said, "Xiubai wants to see you and his mother."

"Brother Xu, come with me to the back courtyard to fetch your wife, let’s go see Xiubai."

As these words fell, Shen Chongxu seemed to realize something as well.

He did not ask, merely put away the smile on his face, took off the wide cloak on his body, and followed Shen Chongming toward the small courtyard on the back mountain where Liu Yiran lived.

When they met again, Liu Yiran already had the appearance of a middle-aged woman.

Toward Shen Chongxu, she still maintained great respect and courtesy.

"Let’s go, Xiubai wants to see us."

Looking at the marks time had left on Liu Yiran’s face, Shen Chongxu spoke calmly.

"Xiubai?"

At these words, Liu Yiran grew somewhat agitated, then hurriedly bowed slightly to the two brothers before her and said, "Then shall I go and tidy myself up?"

Though her status had been acknowledged by the Shen Family, all these years she had only known that Shen Xiubai was in seclusion cultivating some kind of Secret Skill; mother and son had not seen each other for several decades.

Now, seeing Shen Chongxu returning from the Southern Border, and hearing that Shen Xiubai wanted to see the two of them.

Liu Yiran was very excited inside.

Shen Chongxu had intended to stop her, but Shen Chongming forced out a slight smile and nodded, saying, "Sister-in-law, tidy up first, your elder brother and Chongxu will wait here."

At his words, Liu Yiran quickly bowed in salute, then called for the attendant maid and went to the inner hall to have her hair and makeup done.

In the hall, the two brothers sat quietly.

"Brother Ming."

After a long time, Shen Chongxu suddenly turned his head, and asked in a deep voice, "Did that brat Xiubai manage to accomplish that matter he was doing for the Shen Family?"

Shen Chongming pondered for a breath and nodded.

"It’s basically finished. This time he... he wants to see you and sister-in-law for the last... the last time."

Even with his firm temperament, having to tell a father such news about his son, Shen Chongming still felt it hard to bear.

Mixed in with it was a great deal of guilt.

When Shen Chongxu last came back, he had promised him that Xiubai would be well taken care of at home and that nothing would happen.

But now...

A trace of gratified smile appeared on Shen Chongxu’s face; he gently clapped his hands and sighed, "So it’s done, that’s good. At least he hasn’t disgraced his old man."

"Brother Ming, you don’t have to be like this. For us brothers and our descendants to be able to sacrifice for the clan, that is our honor..."

"Xiubai, he..."

"Forgive me for keeping my husband and Patriarch waiting, I am ready."

Liu Yiran, properly dressed, walked out from the back hall, cutting off Shen Chongxu’s words.

Seeing her radiant appearance, Shen Chongxu clenched his fist, did not continue speaking, and rose to say:

"Let’s go."

Shen Chongming also stood up, leading the couple toward the back mountain.

In front of the Light Gate, Shen Chongxu and Liu Yiran curiously sized up the five-colored, flowing Light Gate before them.

"Xiubai is inside. You two go in, your elder brother will wait outside."

What followed was time for their family, and Shen Chongming did not wish to go in and disturb.

Shen Chongxu nodded slightly, then, after a brief hesitation, led Liu Yiran across the Light Gate and vanished from sight.

...

Second floor of the Black Water Pavilion.

Ever since coming out of the Five Elements Secret Realm, Shen Yuan seemed to have suffered quite a blow.

At this moment he was stirring the Power of Great Derivation in his body, frantically deducing something.

After a long while, the Power of Great Derivation permeating the entire second floor of the Black Water Pavilion suddenly shuddered, and the face of Shen Yuan, who sat cross-legged before the desk, flushed red as he couldn’t help but spit out a mouthful of blood mist.

"How could it be like this..."

Ignoring the blood mist at the corner of his mouth, he slowly opened his eyes, his face full of shock and disbelief.

"Could it be that my Shen Family truly cannot escape this calamity this time?"

Murmuring in a trembling voice, Shen Yuan’s face was filled with despair.

Over these past two days, he had started with Eldest, Shen Wenxing, and one by one deduced the fortunes and disasters awaiting Shen Wen’an, Xu Zhan, Shen Li and the others, but the results, without exception, had all been death hexagrams of certain death!

Such results made him suspect that there was something wrong with his Power of Great Derivation.

For this, he had specially conducted an even more comprehensive derivation of Eldest Shen Wenxing’s fate.

Yet no matter from which direction he deduced, the final result was the same dead end.

And just now, after consuming a portion of his lifespan for an even deeper derivation, he had even vaguely seen the scene of Shen Wenxing’s tragic death!

The powerful body of a Body Cultivator was cleaved into two by a single sword; the remaining upper half of his torso struggled and roared, and was finally completely blasted apart by a streak of mysterious light...

Seeing this with his own eyes caused his Heart Spirit to suffer a tremendous impact; his qi and blood surged, and he almost Fell into Demon.

Staggering up from before the desk, Shen Yuan came to the window of the Black Water Pavilion and gazed blankly out.

The sunlight reflected off the water’s surface onto his slightly aged, dejected face, making it appear especially eerie.

Before his eyes, the scene from the hexagram of Shen Wenxing’s tragic death and blood-crying screams constantly surfaced, like sharp daggers ceaselessly stabbing at the tip of his heart.

"Pff!"

A look of pain flashed across his face, and Shen Yuan once again couldn’t hold back, spitting out another mouthful of blood.

His eyes suddenly shifted from lifeless to grave, then from grave to ruthless.

"Destiny?"

"This old man refuses to believe in that damn thing..."

A hoarse murmur sounded; he lightly raised his hand to wipe away the blood at the corner of his mouth, then resolutely returned to sit cross-legged before the desk.

Though the hexagrams showed that after the Dao collapse of Yangnao Land this time, the Shen Family members would all die tragic deaths.

He was unwilling to submit to fate just like that.
