The system notification remained floating before Zarek’s eyes, its amber light casting a cold reflection across his pupils.

[Investment Return Processing...] [Reward Calculation: Permanent Physical Enhancement — Significant Strength Increase.]

The letters shifted, recalculating as the data from Elsa and Ayesha’s crystal-fueled hunts fed back into the loop. The system identified Elsa as the first target. A crisp notification snapped into place.

[Investment Return Received.] [Target: Elsa] [Rewards: Permanent Physical Enhancement — Strength Multiplication.]

Zarek narrowed his eyes. Earlier returns had yielded steady, cumulative gains—minor increments that slowly built his baseline power. But multiplication was an entirely different tier. Before he could calculate the implications, the second notification materialized right below it.

[Investment Return Received.] [Target: Ayesha] [Rewards: Permanent Physical Enhancement — Strength Multiplication.]

Two consecutive returns of that magnitude came from a single outing. Zarek barely had time to register the first before the second arrived.

Before his mind could process the second prompt, an internal shockwave tore through his chest.

It didn’t begin as warmth. It began as pressure—a heavy, suffocating weight pressing outward from inside his bones.

Zarek stumbled half a step, his breath catching in his throat. He had endured severe injuries, broken ribs, and the brutal tearing of flesh against the human-faced monster. This was nothing like that. This wasn’t an injury; it was an invasion.

Heat surged beneath his skin, spreading outward from his neck and shoulders in a blinding flash. Within seconds, his skin flushed a deep, violent red. The blood vessels across his neck and arms stood out like thick ropes, throbbing with a manic rhythm.

"Zarek?" Elsa’s voice cut through the hum of the system notifications, sharp with sudden uncertainty.

He couldn’t answer. His teeth clenched so hard his jaw ached. The heat was turning molten, baking him from the inside out. Every muscle fiber in his body tightened simultaneously, contracting with unnatural density before snapping violently outward.

The pain shifted, plunging deep into his skeletal structure.

His shoulders broadened with a sickening, grinding pop.

His spine elongated, forcing his posture to straighten as vertebra by vertebra stretched to accommodate a frame that no longer belonged to him. His ribs and chest expanded, pressing against his lungs with crushing force.

His arms and legs lengthened, the skin stretching taut over hardening muscle and denser bone. His hands and feet grew broader, proportioning themselves to a body expanding past its old limits.

Zarek fought to keep his footing. His pride and instinctive defiance flared; he refused to buckle easily. He dug his boots into the pavement, trying to anchor himself against the internal storm.

It was useless. His center of gravity shifted violently as his height crept upward. The world seemed to tilt as he cleared his previous height, pushing higher until his boots settled firmly on the ground at six feet four inches.

The transformation tore past his threshold of endurance. The agony reached his brain, sharp and blinding, obliterating his focus.

Ahhhhh!

An involuntary scream ripped from his throat.

It was the primal sound of a body being violently pulled apart and reforged.

Elsa and Ayesha reacted instantly. "What—what’s happening to him?" Ayesha cried out, stepping forward, her weapon dropping slack against her side.

Elsa moved to grab his arm, her eyes wide with shock. "Zarek!"

He tried to swat her hand away, to maintain his composure, but his legs finally gave out. The sheer weight of his newly dense, altered frame dragged him down.

His knees hit the asphalt, and the world dissolved into blackness as he collapsed.

When consciousness flickered back, the open street was gone.

The familiar, stale air of their apartment greeted him first. Zarek lay flat on the floor, his breathing heavy and uneven. The red flush had faded from his skin, leaving it pale once more, but his body felt entirely alien.

Elsa and Ayesha were crouched nearby. Their faces bore expressions of genuine alarm and confusion. They had seen him survive monsters and kill without hesitation, but watching him break down in the street had shaken them.

"He’s waking up," Ayesha whispered, her hand hovering near her firearm as if unsure whether protection or panic was required.

Elsa watched him closely, her voice cautious. "What happened out there? You just collapsed."

Zarek didn’t answer immediately. He pushed himself up from the floor.

The movement felt entirely different. His limbs moved with a terrifying, effortless efficiency, but his proportions were wrong—or rather, they were different than they had been an hour ago.

His old tank top felt uncomfortably tight across a chest that was broader, thicker, and packed with dense muscle.

He stood up fully, realizing at once how much taller he was. The ceiling of the apartment felt slightly closer. His eyes surveyed the room from a new vantage point.

He reached out and gripped the edge of the heavy wooden table, testing his coordination. He didn’t mean to use force, but his fingers instinctively tightened.

Crack.

The solid wood groaned, and a deep fissure split across the table’s edge beneath his grip. Splinters bit into his palm, but his skin didn’t even break.

Zarek stared at his hand, then let out a breathless laugh.

Heheheh!

It wasn’t the amusement of a normal man; it was the thrill of a predator discovering a new set of claws.

This wasn’t a minor strength increase. The system had multiplied his strength, pushing him far beyond his previous limits. The raw power humming beneath his skin was immense.

He realized the danger instantly. A careless movement could crush bone; a miscalculated strike could shatter his own surroundings.

With this much strength, even a careless movement could have disastrous consequences. Instead of making him cautious, the realization sent a surge of exhilaration through him. The apocalypse kept giving him better tools, and he was more than willing to master them.

Moving away from the splintered table, Zarek flicked his gaze upward, calling up the system interface to verify the final parameters of his reward.

The prompt remained logged in the corner of his vision. He ignored it, glancing down at the status list of his bonded assets instead.

His eyes landed on the names and numbers below.

He froze.

The words and digits hung before him, sharp and unmistakable:

[Target: Elsa] [Favorability: 80]

[Target: Ayesha] [Favorability: 78]

Zarek stared. The silence in the room suddenly felt heavy.

The last time he checked, Elsa’s favorability had sat at fifty, and Ayesha’s had lingered at forty. Those numbers had reflected cautious utility, grudging compliance, and underlying fear. An eighty and a seventy-eight were entirely different.

He slowly raised his head, shifting his gaze from the glowing blue text across the room to where Elsa and Ayesha stood watching him.

Their troubled expressions offered him no immediate explanation. Yet the numbers remained unmistakable. Whatever had changed, their favorability had climbed far beyond its previous levels.

The physical transformation had rewritten his body. These numbers had rewritten everything else.
