Dao Companion Crippled, Coveters Move

Chapter 472 455: Little Yueqiu: This Young Gentleman in White Is Seriously 'Ill

  • Next Chapter

Pei Yuhang had just begun to speak when his gaze sharpened.

"What's wrong?"

Little Yueqiu was exceptionally bright and keenly sensed Pei Yuhang's vigilance. She carefully clutched the hem of her clothes and asked in a small voice,

"Is it our pursuers?"

Pei Yuhang shook his head. He left her with a single sentence—"You eat the fish first. I'll be back before it gets cold"—then picked up the Silent Sword and walked out the door.

Little Yueqiu pressed her lips together, then silently placed the roasted fish back over the fire to continue cooking it.

'As long as I keep roasting the fish, it won't get cold... He'll definitely come back.'

...

The moment Pei Yuhang stepped out of the thatched hut, the autumn wind suddenly died.

He stood silently with his gaze lowered, his white robes shimmering with a cold light in the dawn. A withered leaf drifted down, scraping against his scabbard, and split silently in two before it could touch the stone path.

"SNAP—"

The crisp snap of a dry branch came from the woods not far away.

"My, my, what a perceptive Swordsman."

A raspy, aged voice tinged with amusement rang out as a stooped old farmer slowly pushed his way through the bushes.

A rusty woodcutting axe dangled at his waist, and his coarse linen clothes were speckled with fresh mud. No matter how you looked at him, he seemed like an ordinary farmer heading up the mountain to cut firewood.

His murky eyes darted about before settling on Pei Yuhang. "Such an unbelievably handsome young man. If I wasn't certain you were merely a mortal, I'd almost suspect you were one of the Immortals of legend."

"I've been on the Celestial List of assassins across the kingdoms for eighteen years, and you're the first one to ever spot me—"

"SWISH!"

A brilliant flash of sword-light suddenly tore through the morning mist.

As two heads flew high into the air, beads of spattering blood seemed to freeze in mid-air, reflecting the old farmer's suddenly twisted expression.

Those two faces, still bearing savage sneers—they belonged to the assassins who had been lying in wait on either side of the hut.

A feigned attack from the front while the real ambush lay in wait—a tried-and-true tactic that, today, had failed before that peerless blade.

"How did you find this place?"

The tip of Pei Yuhang's sword pointed to the ground as a single drop of blood trickled slowly down the cloud-like patterns etched into the Silent Sword's blade.

The old farmer's Adam's apple bobbed.

He knew he couldn't escape, so he simply broke into a loud laugh. The stench of alcohol wafted from between his yellowed and blackened teeth. "Young man, your position has long been completely exposed to the Government Office."

"Do you know how much silver the bounty on your heads is worth—yours and Prince Ning's daughter's? Every master in the world has their eyes on you, especially the head of that Silver-haired Witch—"

HUM—

The sword flashed.

The old farmer's body slumped lifelessly to the ground.

Pei Yuhang sheathed his sword. "For an assassin, you talk too much," he said coldly. "A killer friend of mine once said that when an assassin is discovered before they can strike, they've already lost. Let alone one who wastes so much time with nonsense."

He turned and walked back into the thatched hut. By the fire, the fish in the little silver-haired girl's hands was still giving off steam, but it was now nothing more than a piece of black charcoal.

But that didn't matter. All Little Yueqiu knew was that Pei Yuhang was back.

She dropped the piece of charcoal, stood up, and asked Pei Yuhang, "Do we have to leave now?"

"Where are we going next?"

Pei Yuhang shook his head. "Yueqiu, we have nowhere to run. No matter where we go, that woman will know... But I will protect you."

Little Yueqiu furrowed her brow in confusion. It seemed Pei Yuhang's sickness was getting worse.

'How could anyone be omniscient?'

'Besides, if that person really was all-knowing, they would have caught me back at Prince Ning's Mansion. Why would they have let Pei Yuhang rescue me?'

But despite her doubts, Little Yueqiu still trustingly took Pei Yuhang's hand.

'Since he's so sick, I'll have to take good care of him to repay him for saving my life...'

As she thought this, she prepared to head out the door with Pei Yuhang, only for him to pull her back.

"What's wrong?"

"There are bodies at the front door. You're too young to see that. We'll use the back."

Pei Yuhang said gently, squeezing her small hand.
