Chapter 189: Chapter 112: Immaculate Descent of Chengxuan, a Millennium of Immortal Grace, a Wondrous Dao
A streak of rainbow light traversed the sky, circling above the clouds before descending into a Flying Pavilion and drawing many eyes.
In a Flying Pavilion to the east—the most honored of them all—Han Wang looked up and muttered to himself, "Junior Brother Xu?"
"Oh?" The Daoist sitting to Han Wang’s left murmured in surprise.
This Daoist appeared to be in his thirties, with a gentle and refined disposition. His long hair was coiled in a topknot, fastened with a pin shaped from an ebony branch that crackled with lightning. His Cyan Jade Robe, a ceremonial garment representing his status as part of the Yuxiao True Inheritance, made his distinguished identity clear.
This man was named Yu Du, and he had cultivated for over four hundred years. As the Yuxiao Sect’s sole Top-Grade Golden Core Cultivator of his time, he had single-handedly carried the reputation of an entire generation of the True Inheritance. Though he had now reached the Nascent Soul realm, the current generation still revered him as their Eldest Senior Brother.
Yu Du lowered the teacup from his lips and recited, "Chengxuan descends unto the world, a form without a flaw; a thousand years of immortal grace, a single wondrous Dao."
"Could the one who just flew past be Xuzhuang of your esteemed sect, Fellow Daoist Xu?"
"Xuzhuang?" Hearing this, the cyan-robed Daoist beside Yu Du, who had been engrossed in the duel below, suddenly perked up. His attention snapped back to their conversation, and he strained his ears to listen.
Han Wang smiled. "Those are just rumors from the outside. Why is Brother Yu repeating them?"
Seeing Han Wang tacitly confirm it with his deflection, Yu Du laughed. "A name celebrated throughout the Divine Continent—how can that be considered a rumor? I’ve long heard of him but have never had the chance to meet. It seems we are fated to do so today. I wonder if Brother Han could make an introduction for me?"
Han Wang considered for a moment before replying, "Junior Brother Xu has been in seclusion for a long time. He only just appeared today, so I don’t know if he’s busy."
"How about this? After our official business is concluded for the day, I’ll find another time to invite you, Brother Yu, and Junior Brother Xu to my residence for a banquet."
Han Wang and Yu Du were not here today for a private gathering; they both had official duties to attend to.
The Demon Sect had already made its intentions clear, poised to re-emerge onto the Divine Continent. For thousands of years, the Tai Su and Yuxiao sects had been closely allied, so they naturally increased their communications in response to this threat.
Holding a grand sect competition to hone their disciples’ combat abilities was a method the two sects had jointly decided upon. To avoid the folly of working in isolation, they also intended for the most outstanding disciples from each competition to have an exchange of swordsmanship.
However, the Yuxiao Sect did not have as many disciples as Tai Su. While the Tai Su Orthodox Sect had only just finished preparations and completed two rounds, the Yuxiao Sect’s grand competition had already concluded.
So, the Tai Su Orthodox Sect simply sent an invitation, asking the Yuxiao Sect to come and observe the Tai Su Sect’s grand competition. Yu Du was the envoy representing the Yuxiao Sect, tasked with bringing the younger generation for the exchange. Han Wang, of course, was responsible for hosting the Yuxiao Envoy on behalf of the Tai Su Sect and arranging the program for the exchange.
Han Wang’s underlying meaning was that this was not the proper place for making personal connections. Yu Du, of course, understood. After a moment’s thought, he smiled. "That would be excellent."
However, Yu Du had another idea. He glanced to the side and saw the cyan-robed Daoist still listening intently, so he sent a voice transmission directly into his mind.
"Junior Brother Yue, I heard that the last time you came to observe the Tai Su ceremony, you met Xuzhuang once?"
As it turned out, this cyan-robed Daoist was none other than Yue Yujie, a True Inheritance of the Yuxiao Sect.
Yue Yujie had been listening intently to their conversation. Just as he was feeling a hint of disappointment that there seemed to be no intention of inviting Xuzhuang to join them, he was startled by Yu Du’s question. He replied via voice transmission, "That is correct."
Yu Du’s expression remained unchanged as he continued chatting with Han Wang about the duels below, but he sent a mental reply to Yue Yujie: "Junior Brother, do you feel that Xuzhuang lives up to his name?"
Yue Yujie hesitated for a moment before replying, "I have never witnessed Xuzhuang’s techniques myself, but judging solely from his cultivation, he lives up to his reputation."
Yu Du nodded to himself, a plan already forming in his mind. He mulled it over for a moment before asking via voice transmission, "If that’s the case, how about we switch your opponent for the sparring match to Xuzhuang?"
"What?" Yue Yujie was startled. He subconsciously glanced at the cold and aloof woman sitting opposite him, who carried a Sword Box on her back. As if sensing his gaze, the woman slanted her phoenix eyes toward him. Yue Yujie, remaining composed, returned a faint smile before asking in his mind, "Isn’t the schedule already set? Can it still be changed?"
As it happened, after Yu Du had struggled to uphold the reputation of Yuxiao’s True Inheritance for a century, their fortunes had finally turned. Yue Yujie, Lin Shanshang, and Fang Shize had successively achieved the Top-grade Golden Core, a true case of prosperity returning after a long decline.
But perhaps their journey had been too smooth. All three were disciples from prominent families within the Yuxiao Sect, and their aptitude and affinity for the Dao were certainly not lacking. However, apart from Fang Shize, the last of them to form a Top-grade Golden Core, both Yue Yujie and Lin Shanshang were the types to immerse themselves in cultivation and rarely leave the sect.
In ordinary times, that would have been fine, but now they faced signs of the Demon Sect’s impending return. Therefore, Yue Yujie wanted to use this exchange between Tai Su and Yuxiao to cross swords with a True Inheritance of his own generation. The Tai Su Sect, with its customary pride and magnanimity, would never refuse such a request. After several rounds of discussion between the two sects, it had been decided that Yue Yujie would have a match with a Sword Step Master.
Hearing Yue Yujie’s question, Yu Du’s voice leisurely transmitted back, "As long as you agree, Junior Brother Yue, I will propose it to Brother Han."
Yue Yujie pondered for a moment. His entire reason for wanting to cross swords with a Tai Su True Inheritance was to temper himself. Now that he had a chance to face Xuzhuang, he naturally wouldn’t back down.
"Chengxuan descends unto the world, a form without a flaw; a thousand years of immortal grace, a single wondrous Dao." A sharp glint flashed in Yue Yujie’s eyes as he thought to himself, ’Xuzhuang, you have such a great reputation now. I admit I may not be your match, but I am not afraid to suffer a defeat if it means tempering my sword’s edge. When they speak of the great figures of our generation in the future, my name will not be absent!’
Yue Yujie’s gaze firmed with resolve. He replied via voice transmission, "There is no need for you to suggest it, Senior Brother. I will speak to Senior Brother Han myself."
"Oh?" Yu Du was slightly surprised. In his heart, the junior brothers and sisters of his sect were still fledglings under his wing. He knew that while Yue Yujie did not show it on his face, he was immensely proud on the inside—his very suggestion to duel a Tai Su True Inheritance was proof enough of that.
