Book 11: Chapter 29: Meteor Fall

  • Next Chapter

There were two types of Magic Scrolls for Apostles. One type was World Treasures obtained from fantasy worlds. The other type was either synthesized by Apostles using materials according to the Star Void’s magic rules, or directly exchanged from the Star Void’s item list.

These two types of Magic Scrolls were fundamentally different. The former was made by Plot Characters from otherworldly dimensions. These Magic Scrolls usually had magic patterns engraved on them and contained the magical energy of that spell sealed inside.

The latter was just a set of magic rules from the Star Void. It did not directly seal magical energy. It used the purest laws of magic to communicate with the magical principles of otherworldly dimensions. It then attracted the corresponding magical energy from the Quest World and released it.

The Magic Scrolls Qin Lun used to fill his Glove of Sacrifice were mostly the first type. Although he had affinity for multiple elements, his combat profession was not a Magician after all. He could not control spells with complex structures.

The Magic Scroll in Rand’s hand now was the second type. In fact, most Magic Scrolls above the seventh High Rank were of this kind. This was because the Star Void’s item list did not offer high-rank Magic Scrolls for exchange. At least, Apostles with titles like Qin Lun and the others could not see them.

Compared to the scroll treasures produced in plot worlds, this type of Magic Scroll had a major flaw. Its power and accuracy largely depended on the Apostle themselves.

The moment Rand tore the Magic Scroll, an invisible wave of law spread out in all directions. At the same time, the Magic Scroll turned into specks of light and disappeared in Firecracker’s hand.

“Boom!” Dull thunder rumbled in the night sky. By the soft light emanating from the top of Winnie’s staff, everyone observed flickering sparks appearing in the air above the lake, like fireflies in a wild field at night.

A sharp light flashed in Rand’s eyes. He raised his hands with apparent difficulty. The tiny sparks quickly gathered together following his movements. During this process, most sparks silently went out. After all, Firecracker, who had not yet reached the high-rank level, was not a grand magician and could not control that many fire elements.

These firefly-like sparks eventually formed over twenty fireballs the size of ping pong balls. They hovered quietly in the night sky.

“Is that all?” The group, who had held a sliver of hope, felt their hearts grow cold.

However, only two beings truly sensed the threat posed by those ping pong fireballs in the night sky. One was Rand himself. Firecracker’s hands trembled slightly. Sweat poured down his cheeks like a waterfall, but he dared not wipe it, afraid that any lapse in concentration would cause him to lose control of these small fireballs.

The other being was the Ghostface Squid on the water’s surface. The mountain-like sea beast slightly raised its head to look at the fireballs in the night sky. In the two holes on its ghostly face representing eye sockets, two points of eerie green light appeared, resembling will-o’-the-wisps.

Its will-o’-wisp-like eyes stared nervously at these small fireballs. It stopped trying to capture everyone and gathered all its tentacles, waving them above its head as if resisting the coming danger.

“Fall!” A trickle of blood seeped from the corner of Rand’s mouth. He spat out a single word from between his teeth. His right index finger hooked slightly. The hovering small fireballs in the night sky seemed to receive some command. One of them dipped slightly and suddenly shot down towards the lake surface.

Following its start, the other fireballs followed closely. One by one, they began to accelerate their descent.

“Whoosh…” As these small fireballs fell, a long whistle, like a train whistle, grew from far to near, from low to high, roaring into everyone’s ears.

The fireballs rapidly enlarged in the night sky. Originally only ping pong ball-sized, the fireballs had imperceptibly expanded to the size of washbasins, trailing long fiery tails behind them. By the time they truly reached the area above the lake, each fireball, in everyone’s eyes, had almost become a meteor the size of a windmill, several meters in diameter.

At this point, the dark red lava patterns on the surface of the fire meteors were clearly distinguishable. Everyone could even see the flowing fiery magma within the rock crevices. A wave of dry, hot air rushed towards their faces, actually giving them the illusion of a scorching summer day beside this swampy lake.

Ninth-rank fire magic – Meteor Fall!

At this moment, everyone, including Qin Lun and Hill, felt awe rise from the depths of their hearts. This was what a Forbidden Spell was like. Every Forbidden Spell was comparable to a natural disaster, something beyond human power to resist.

Under the power of such magic, any non-divine being would instinctively feel their own insignificance. Fortunately, Rand could not fully execute this Meteor Fall scroll. Otherwise, from this close distance, even if they killed the Ghostface Squid, they would probably be buried along with it.

“Roooar!” The Ghostface Squid raised its head and let out a piercing screech. Over ten huge tentacles fiercely slapped the lake surface, stirring up waves tens of meters high that surged forward to meet the falling fire meteors head-on.

“Ssss!” The first falling fire meteor violently crashed into the water wave, vaporizing a large amount of steam. However, this alone could not stop the fire meteors’ assault. These meteors contained not only high-temperature magma but also carried immense kinetic energy from their fall through the night sky.

“Boom!” The first fire meteor shot through the water wave like a cannonball and slammed hard into a tentacle that was whipping towards it.

“Thwack!” The Ghostface Squid’s tentacle caught this fire meteor like a baseball glove, instantly bending into a C-shape. A strong, savory meaty scent filled the air. The fire meteor, its kinetic energy dissipated, rebounded into the water, stirring up another large cloud of mist.

“Let’s go!” Qin Lun propped up Rand, who had gone completely limp, and quietly reminded his companions who were still stunned in place. To confront the Meteor Fall, the Ghostface Squid had withdrawn the many tentacles blocking their retreat. If they didn’t slip away now, when would they?

Everyone snapped out of their daze. They took one last, longing look behind them. At this moment, the Ghostface Squid was completely engulfed by numerous fire meteors. Its massive, mountain-like body flickered in and out of view within the water mist.

“Can such a high-rank fire magic not kill it?” the Rogue Lago couldn’t help but ask.

“This spell is incomplete. Rand couldn’t control too many meteors. The Ghostface Squid might get injured, but it probably won’t die.” Hill responded softly, though his expression also held a hint of regret.

A Legendary Creature… if they could kill it, it would probably mean a great harvest!

“Boom!” Just after everyone had retreated several tens of meters, a massive object crashed heavily not far in front of them.

After seeing what it was, everyone’s eyelids twitched. Although this thing was torn open, battered and broken, with its midsection mostly severed, and still emitting an enticing meaty aroma, they could still recognize it as one of the Ghostface Squid’s tentacles.

That sea monster had actually been paying attention to their movements while resisting the Meteor Fall!

“Lago! Winnie!” Rick roared. He dragged his Horse-Cutting Saber, which was like a door panel, and strode towards the Ghostface Squid’s tentacle.

The Knight seemed to have deactivated the anti-mass enchantment on his heavy armor. Each heavy step left a deep footprint in the muddy path. At the same time, a layer of purplish-red fighting energy spread all over his body, making him look like a giant made of flame.

“Time for us to work!” The Rogue turned back and gave everyone a bright smile. His figure instantly vanished from his original spot. When he reappeared, he was above Rick’s head.

“Light Body Technique! Brute Force Technique!” Winnie’s face was solemn. She immediately cast several buff spells. Strangely, her buff spells did not land on Rick. The faint magical light all covered Lago.

The Rogue in the air immediately felt the changes on his body. His usual playful grin was gone. A sharp light flashed in his eyes. He tapped one foot on Rick’s shoulder and actually split into two figures in an instant.

One figure glided like a great roc over the tentacle, while the other nimbly slid underneath the tentacle. Then, the two figures merged back into one.

Neither of these two figures held a dagger. Their fingers on both hands were pinched in strange, orchid-like gestures. As they passed above and below the tentacle, their fingers performed several dazzlingly swift hand gestures, leaving behind trails of afterimages.

“Hmm?” A silvery-white light flashed in Qin Lun’s right eye. Among everyone, only he, relying on the time-stopping effect of his Clock Eye, could clearly see what the Rogue held in his hands. They were two crystal-clear threads, like silk, that wound around the tentacle from above and below, tightly binding it.

“Hey!” The Rogue, having passed the tentacle, suddenly pulled with all his might. His face instantly turned crimson-purple. Veins like earthworms bulged out on his forehead. The Ghostface Squid’s thick, pillar-like tentacle was actually pulled taut by the skinny Rogue, stretched like a spring at its limit.

“Charge!” Rick, while running, had a sharp light in his eyes. The fighting energy on his body boiled once more. His figure turned into a purple streak of light in the darkness, crashing head-on into the Ghostface Squid’s tentacle.

“Thump!” A dull sound followed immediately. The Knight’s charge was unstoppable. With a flash of saber light, the Ghostface Squid’s tentacle was cleanly cut in two. The front section, about twenty meters long, spun through the air.

Additionally, a small section of the tentacle at the part already blasted by the fire meteor was also torn off by the Knight’s strike. This tentacle of the Ghostface Squid was completely ruined.

“Roo…” An angry roar came from within the thick mist behind everyone. The remaining part of the severed tentacle finally retracted underwater. Its length was no longer sufficient to intercept these prey.

“Well done!” Mastashia was greatly excited. She waved her hand and led everyone in a frantic dash forward.

Qin Lun, supporting Rand, ran at the back of the group. As he passed by the Ghostface Squid’s severed tentacle limb, his eyes suddenly flashed. He noticed this section was not the part Rick had cut, but another small piece from the blasted fracture, only about a meter long.

“Holy Thorn!” Qin Luin freed one hand. Countless thin, long thorny vines suddenly sprouted from his palm. These vines twisted together, deftly wrapping around this severed limb, and dragged this meaty limb, thick as an oil barrel.

After pulling it in front of himself, he patted it with his hand, and this severed limb of the Ghostface Squid appeared in his Storage Space.
