Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Continuing the Act

Yin Da lowered his head and leaned in close to her neck...

He was tall and powerfully built, but Bai Wanwan found him completely unattractive.

The moment he drew near, a wave of nausea washed over her.

On instinct, she swung a slap at him.

Yin Da caught her hand. His gaze suddenly turned terrifying. "You find me disgusting, too?"

Bai Wanwan’s heart sank. ’It’s over,’ she thought. ’The persona I’ve been faking is about to collapse.’

She tried her best to salvage the situation. "I couldn’t see clearly just now. You startled me."

But Yin Da’s expression only grew darker, as if a storm cloud had settled over him.

He gripped Bai Wanwan’s wrist, his fingers tightening relentlessly.

"Hey, you’re hurting me!"

But Yin Da seemed not to hear her. His eyes were squeezed shut, veins bulged on his forehead, and his face was drenched in sweat.

’What’s going on?’

Forgetting the pain, Bai Wanwan stared intently at his face.

’He looks like he’s in agony.’

’Who cares if he’s in pain? I’m the one who’s really hurting.’

Bai Wanwan seized the opportunity and aimed a kick at a certain vulnerable spot.

As expected, Yin Da let out a muffled groan, released her, and collapsed to the ground.

Freed, Bai Wanwan immediately scrambled off the stone bed and put distance between them.

Yin Da lay prone on the ground, pounding the floor with clenched fists. Then, Bai Wanwan saw a large lump suddenly swell on his spine before quickly vanishing.

This happened several times, back and forth, until Yin Da’s eyes had turned completely black.

Bai Wanwan watched, dumbfounded. ’Is this Beastman transforming? It looks more like he’s mutating.’

Just then, a Wandering Beast walked in from outside. Upon seeing Yin Da on the ground, he immediately quickened his pace.

"City Lord?"

Hearing the voice, Yin Da’s pitch-black eyes swiveled, and he slowly lifted his head.

Before the Wandering Beast could make another sound, Yin Da sprang up and latched his teeth onto the man’s neck...

Bai Wanwan was completely frozen.

She was once again faced with the bloody brutality of the Wandering Beasts.

A numb, tingling weakness spread across her back. She wanted to retreat, but her body stood ramrod straight.

After Yin Da finished off the Wandering Beast, the dark aura on his face slowly receded.

He turned his gaze to Bai Wanwan, who was standing frozen nearby, then got to his feet and walked toward her, one step at a time.

"Afraid of me?"

The savage cruelty had not yet completely faded from Yin Da’s face.

Bai Wanwan felt that one wrong answer would lead her to the same fate as the Wandering Beast.

She quickly forced the corners of her mouth up, trying to make her expression seem more natural.

"I was a little scared just now, but more than that, my heart ached for you."

Having said her piece, she fought back the nausea from the thick, coppery scent of blood in the room and took the initiative, stepping forward to take his hand. "Were you in a lot of pain just now? I’m so useless. I couldn’t do anything to help you."

Hearing her words, the savagery in Yin Da’s expression eased a fraction. "Does your heart really ache for me?"

Bai Wanwan nodded. "Yes! You were in so much pain, your face was covered in sweat, but you just gritted your teeth and bore it. I wished I could take on some of that pain for you."

Yin Da gripped her hand tightly. "Wanwan, don’t lie to me. As long as you stay by my side and behave, I can give you anything you desire."

Bai Wanwan gave him a sweet smile, her eyes seemingly filled with nothing but him. "Of course I’ll stay by your side. I don’t want anything... except for you to be happy."

Bai Wanwan hadn’t expected that a few simple lies could pull the wool over Yin Da’s eyes so completely.

He reached out a long arm and pulled her into his embrace. "I’ll remember this! If you lie to me, I’ll devour you, bite by bite."

’Damn it, that’s terrifying!’

’An abuser like him wants my love? Love my ass.’

She nodded with a beaming smile, pointing at the carnage on the floor. "Hurry and clean this up. I can’t really take it."

With that distraction, Bai Wanwan had managed to bluff her way through another crisis.

She didn’t know how much longer she could keep this up.

But she truly disliked this Yin Da. Forget mating—even just being close to him made her skin crawl.

Yin Da was in a good mood, so he didn’t dwell on Bai Wanwan’s words. He got up and went out to find a Wandering Beast to handle the cleanup.

"Hua Sheng, how much longer until this baby is due?"

"Host, at least another forty days."

’Forty days... If I stay here for forty days and give birth to a litter of cubs, what would I do with so many of them even if I did manage to escape?’

’No, I have to find a way to escape before the cubs are born.’

"Wanwan..."

Suddenly, Bai Wanwan heard a very soft voice.

She whipped her head around to look. The area outside the main entrance was empty.

"Wanwan..."

Bai Wanwan shot to her feet. This time, she heard it clearly. It was Xin Feng’s voice.

"Xin Feng, is that you?"

The words had barely left her lips when the window was pushed open and Xin Feng’s figure slipped inside.

Seeing Xin Feng, Bai Wanwan no longer had to hide her feelings. She rushed toward him.

Xin Feng strode forward as well, opening his arms to catch her and hold her tight.

"I’m here. You’re safe now."

Xin Feng gently patted her back, a great weight finally lifting from his own heart.

Bai Wanwan felt a sense of grounding, her anxiety washing away. She hugged him tightly, then looked up, her eyes wide with surprised delight. "How did you get in? There are so many Wandering Beastmen outside. Didn’t they see you?"

"My Talent can mask certain scents. I was careful, so they didn’t spot me."

As Bai Wanwan calmed down, the reality of their unsafe position hit her. "Can you get me out of here now?"

"I came to get you out, but we can’t leave right now. With you, I’d be slower. If we were discovered, I couldn’t guarantee your safety."

"But it’s dangerous to stay here! Yin Da could be back any second."

And just like that, he was back.

Yin Da’s voice drifted in from outside. "Clean this place up."

Bai Wanwan took a sharp breath, her eyes darting around the room. She spotted an alcove behind the stone bed.

’It would be a tight squeeze, but it could hide someone.’

With no time to explain, she grabbed Xin Feng and dragged him to the stone bed.

"Xin Feng, hide for a bit. I’ll handle him."

With that, she hurried out, positioning herself to block Yin Da as he was about to enter.

"Where are you off to in such a hurry?"

"Do you know where Zhu Xiu is?"

Yin Da stared at her face. "Zhu Xiu? Why are you looking for him?"

"I want to ask him where we met last time. I lost something very important there," Bai Wanwan lied without batting an eye.

Yin Da blocked her path. "You don’t need to find him. I’ll ask him for you when I have time."

’How can I wait until he has time?’

Bai Wanwan immediately blinked, forcing tears to well up in her eyes.

"It was something my Mother left me. It’s incredibly important. If you don’t help me ask him now, I’ll go find him myself."

Yin Da didn’t know why, but whether she was crying or laughing, this young female always managed to soften his heart.

In the end, he couldn’t resist. He nodded. "Alright, I’ll go ask for you now. Don’t be sad. I promise I’ll help you find it."

Only then did Bai Wanwan break into a sweet smile. She gave him a little push. "Then hurry up and go..."

Yin Da was once again sent away on an errand.

Bai Wanwan didn’t rush back inside. She carefully scanned her surroundings, and only after confirming there were no other Wandering Beastmen nearby did she quickly turn and head back in.

Xin Feng had already emerged from his hiding spot.

"He’s Yin Da, the City Lord of the Wandering Beast City?" Xin Feng’s lips trembled as he spoke with difficulty. "Did he... hurt you?"
