Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 18: A new Rival appears
Kōya turned. Standing a few meters away was a girl with long, dark hair tied practically behind her shoulders. She had clear, perceptive eyes and carried herself with the composed, grounded posture of someone who spent her free time bleeding in the training yards rather than merely attending lectures.
Kōya recognized her instantly from the dining hall. Yuna. One of the highest-ranked martial students in the Academy.
Kaela looked her up and down. "You?"
Yuna gave a single, firm nod. "I want to spar with him."
Haru took a slow step backward, whispering frantically. "That’s Yuna, Kōya."
"I am aware."
"Everyone in the academy knows Yuna."
"Why?"
"Because she’s absolutely terrifying with a blade."
Yuna’s gaze flicked toward Haru. "I can hear you."
Haru immediately found the dirt beneath his boots fascinating.
Kaela looked between Yuna’s determined stance and Kōya’s guarded silence. Her smile returned. "Fine." She tossed a spare practice sword. Yuna caught it flawlessly out of the air and stepped into the center of the ring. Kōya followed, the gravel crunching under his boots. The students hurriedly backed away, forming a wide, breathless circle.
Yuna raised her sword, settling into a low, forward-leaning guard. Kōya mirrored her, keeping his stance neutral. The morning wind swept across the field, rustling the canvas awnings.
Then, Yuna vanished.
She exploded forward, closing the gap with terrifying speed. Her first strike came in a sweeping horizontal arc aimed at Kōya’s ribs. Kōya stepped off the line, bringing his blade down to deflect. But Yuna didn’t commit to the swing. She let the momentum carry her into a spin, bringing the sword around in a vicious backhand aimed at his temple.
Kōya ducked, the heavy wood whistling over his hair, and snapped his blade up to parry her immediate downward follow-up. Crack.
Her style was fundamentally different from Kaela’s. Where Kaela relied on flawless mechanics and absolute efficiency, Yuna fought like a storm—relentless, controlled speed. She wasn’t trying to overpower him with brute strength; she was throwing combinations to dictate his footwork, forcing him into corners he didn’t want to occupy.
She’s restricting my movement, Kōya realized, sidestepping a heavy thrust that would have bruised his sternum.
He retreated a half-step. Yuna relentlessly pursued, unleashing a flurry of diagonal strikes. Kōya twisted, his body narrowly avoiding the wood, and threw a counter slash. Yuna brought her blade up parallel to his, catching the attack in a grinding bind. They pushed against each other, the wood groaning under the pressure.
Suddenly, a faint, crackling blue-white energy flared around Yuna’s wrist, traveling up the length of the wooden blade. The air smelled sharply of ozone.
Kōya’s eyes widened slightly as the static bit into his forearms. "Elemental affinity."
Yuna pushed off the bind, breathing heavily but smiling. "You noticed."
"Lightning," Kōya analyzed, shaking the numbness from his fingers. "Tactically useful."
"That’s all?" Yuna laughed, a bright, genuine sound. "What else should you say when someone brings lightning to a sword fight?"
"You are very strange," she breathed, tightening her grip.
She attacked again, faster this time, the lightning affinity enhancing her muscle twitches.
This time, Kōya made a conscious choice. He stopped trying to win. He stopped trying to predict her trajectory based on the endless wars of his past. He forced Raizen into the dark and just watched her. He watched the tension in her shoulders, the shift of her hips, the slight narrowing of her eyes right before she committed to a lunge.
For the first time in his existence, he wasn’t surviving a battle. He was experiencing a duel.
Yuna struck high; Kōya parried low, stepping laterally. She reversed her grip, sweeping at his knees; Kōya hopped backward, bringing his blade down to snap against hers. The rhythm of the fight changed, shifting from a desperate scramble into a fluid, high-speed dance of parries, dodges, and parallel binds. Wood cracked like thunder across the courtyard.
Yuna’s aura flared brilliantly, the blue energy tracing arcs in the air as she pushed herself to the limit. Deep within Kōya, the heavy, suffocating mass of his dark mana stirred. The Demon Lord’s power recognized a threat and reflexively rose to crush it.
Kōya clamped down on it instantly. He swallowed the dark aura, burying it deep in his core. He would not use it. Not because he feared Kaela’s reprimand, but because this specific fight belonged to Kōya, the student. Not Raizen, the monster.
Sensing his sudden drop in momentum, Yuna saw an opening. She lunged, committing all her weight into a devastating forward thrust aimed dead at his chest.
Raizen’s instinct screamed at Kōya to slip backward, trap her extended arm, and shatter her elbow—a lethal, instantaneous end to the fight.
Kōya ignored it. Instead of retreating, he stepped aggressively inside her guard. He brought his sword up, catching her blade mid-thrust. With a fluid rotation of his wrist, he redirected her momentum, letting her own force pull her forward. As she stumbled past him, her balance broken, Kōya halted his movement perfectly.
The courtyard fell dead silent.
Yuna froze. Kōya’s wooden sword was resting gently against the side of her neck.
A long second passed before Kaela’s voice echoed across the field. "Good."
Kōya lowered his sword, stepping back to give her space. Yuna straightened up, her chest heaving as she brushed the hair out of her face. She looked at the wooden blade in his hand, then up at his eyes.
"You had my arm," she said, her voice steady but laced with adrenaline. "You could have struck a crippling blow."
"Yes."
"Why didn’t you?"
Kōya considered the question, looking down at his hands. He felt entirely different. Lighter. "Because I didn’t need to."
Yuna stared at him for a long, calculating moment. Then, a slow, fiercely competitive smile spread across her face. "Next time, I won’t leave that opening."
Kōya found himself returning the smile. "Good."
From the edge of the sparring ring, Kaela watched them. For the first time that morning, the severe lines of her face had smoothed into an expression of genuine, quiet pride. Kōya had not won because he possessed overwhelming, ancient power. He had won because, for three minutes, he had stopped being a memory. He had observed. He had adapted. He had chosen his path rather than letting his trauma dictate it.
"Class dismissed," Kaela announced, turning away.
A collective wave of groans and exhausted sighs swept across the field as the tension finally broke. Students collapsed onto the grass or limped toward the water barrels.
Haru dropped onto his back in the dirt, throwing his wooden sword away. "I hate sword class."
Kōya walked over, looking down at him. "You survived."
"Barely. My arms feel like jelly."
Yuna walked past them on her way to the weapon racks. She paused, glancing over her shoulder at Kōya. "Tomorrow?"
Kōya met her gaze. "Tomorrow."
She nodded once and disappeared into the crowd.
Haru slowly rolled over, propping himself up on one elbow. He looked from the departing girl to Kōya, his expression a mix of awe and pity. "You know you’re going to have problems now, right?"
"What kind of problems?"
"The terrifying kind. The kind that involve highly competitive girls with lightning magic."
Kōya turned to watch Yuna vanish into the sea of Academy uniforms. For once, his mind did not immediately begin calculating the tactical implications of having a new rival, nor did he assess her as a future threat to be neutralized.
He simply watched her go, appreciating the strength of the encounter.
And somewhere deep inside him—beneath the suffocating instincts of an ancient king, beneath the traumatic memories of blood and endless war—something fragile and entirely new began to take root.
Not a ghost.
Not an inherited reflex.
Something that finally belonged to him.
