Kōya stared at Yuna.

For several agonizing seconds, the world ceased to exist.

The roaring flames consuming the lower town vanished. The splintered slate of the ruined roof disappeared. The mutilated corpses of the demons he had just slaughtered faded into absolute insignificance.

There was only the girl in his arms.

The girl who had been smiling at him by the edge of the lake only hours ago. The girl who had made him promise to wait until morning. The girl who was now dying against his chest.

"No."

The word barely escaped his throat, a ragged, hollow sound.

His hand remained pressed flat against her sternum. His aura, usually a controlled, lethal weapon, flooded into her veins in a desperate, chaotic surge. He tried to force her heart to keep its rhythm. He tried to push the darkness back.

Nothing. The curse greedily swallowed every drop of energy he offered.

He withdrew it instantly. He shifted the elemental alignment, altering the flow of the mana, making it softer, more restorative. He tried again.

Nothing.

His brilliant mind accelerated, frantically tearing through centuries of arcane knowledge.

*Curse structure. Mana circulation blockages. Neurological deterioration. Soul anchoring. Demonic contamination.*

He knew thousands of ways to systematically destroy a human body. He knew hundreds of ways to meticulously restore one. He knew how to manipulate ambient mana, how to force shattered vascular channels open, how to stabilize failing organs, how to ruthlessly suppress magical poison.

But this curse was entirely different.

It wasn’t simply attacking her physical vessel. It was anchoring itself to her very existence. The black, jagged veins crawling across her pale skin were woven directly into her magical core. Every attempt to forcibly burn it out risked instantly destroying the very thing he was desperately trying to save.

Kōya’s breathing became ragged, bordering on panic.

"No..."

He pressed both hands against her, his fingers trembling. "What can I do? Yuna, what can I do?"

Yuna watched his frantic movements. Her dark eyes were perfectly, terrifyingly clear. "Kōya..."

"Wait." His voice cracked. "Don’t talk. Conserve your energy."

He looked around wildly, his eyes scanning the ruined battlefield through the thick smoke. A potion. A healer. A stray magical artifact dropped by the scavengers. Anything.

There was absolutely nothing. Only ash and death.

His gaze snapped back to Yuna’s pale face.

"Think," he ordered himself, his hands shaking.

His mind screamed at him in the darkness. *Think.* There had to be a solution. There was *always* a tactical solution. Every battle possessed shifting variables. Every wound possessed a weakness. Every enemy followed a discernible pattern. Every problem could be reduced to mathematics, analyzed, and solved.

But this wasn’t a battlefield. This was Yuna.

And there was absolutely no strategy, no tactical doctrine, for watching the person you loved bleed out in your arms.

Kōya’s composure shattered.

"If I had held your hand yesterday..."

Yuna’s eyes softened, a deep, heartbreaking sorrow filling her gaze.

Kōya looked down, the tears finally breaking past his defenses, falling hot and fast onto her ruined uniform. "If I had just stopped you from walking away. If I had walked you back to the dormitories. If I hadn’t hesitated..."

His breathing grew harsher, a physical pain in his chest. "If I had just told you everything last night... you wouldn’t have been alone when they came."

A tear slipped down his cheek, tracing the soot. "If I had been faster... If I had been stronger..."

Yuna slowly, painfully lifted her hand.

Kōya didn’t notice the movement at first. He was still staring blindly at the black curse spreading across her collarbone, still obsessively calculating, still searching the dark corners of his soul for an answer that did not exist.

Then, her cold, soot-stained fingers gently touched his cheek.

He froze.

Yuna weakly held his face, forcing him to look away from the curse and into her eyes.

"Kōya."

He looked at her, his vision swimming.

"You’re doing it again," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the crackling fires below.

"Doing what?"

"Blaming yourself."

He stared at her, utterly bewildered by her calm. "I should." The words tore out of him instantly. "I should have been here."

"You came."

"I was too late."

"But you came."

"I couldn’t stop this." He gestured desperately to the curse.

"You stopped them." Her thumb weakly brushed the tear from his cheek.

"I couldn’t stop the curse. I couldn’t save you."

"You tried, Kōya."

"Trying is not enough!" he yelled, the sound raw and broken.

Yuna smiled faintly, a serene, devastating expression. "It was enough for me."

Kōya shook his head violently. "No." His voice dropped into a desperate, pleading pitch. "I can still fix this. Just hold on. I can fix this."

Yuna looked at him for a long, quiet moment.

Then, using the very last reserve of her failing strength, she leaned upward. Her hand remained gently against his cheek to guide him down.

She kissed him.

It wasn’t hurried. It wasn’t fueled by the desperate, clinging passion of survivors. There was absolutely no urgency in it. It was simply long, incredibly gentle, and completely quiet.

It was a farewell, wrapped carefully inside a kiss.

Kōya froze in shock. Then, slowly, his eyes fluttered shut.

For one fleeting, perfect moment, the brutal reality of the world faded away. The roaring fires, the choking smoke, the distant screaming, the agonizing black curse—none of it existed.

There was only Yuna. Only the warmth of her lips and the scent of rain on her skin.

When she finally pulled away, her strength failing, she let her head fall back. Their foreheads remained pressed together.

Kōya opened his eyes.

Yuna was crying, silent tears tracking through the ash on her face.

"So," she whispered, offering a weak, trembling smile, "is this what you were going to tell me tomorrow morning?"

Kōya’s lips trembled violently. "Yes."

"Then tell me now."

He stared into her dark eyes, the mask completely destroyed.

"I love you."

Yuna’s smile widened, despite the tears. "I know."

"No." His voice broke, thick with agony. "I mean it. I mean it with everything I am."

"I know."

"I love you."

She touched his cheek one last time, her fingers slipping slightly as her strength ebbed. "I know."

Kōya pulled her closer, burying his face in her hair.

Yuna’s hand slowly, weakly moved downward. She searched blindly until she found his left hand resting against the slate roof.

Kōya didn’t understand what she was doing. He let her guide his hand upward, pulling it toward herself. Toward her heart.

"Yuna?"

Her eyes met his, fierce and clear even at the end. "Trust me."

He hesitated.

Then, she placed his large, scarred hand directly over the center of her chest, right where her fractured magical core rested beneath the curse. Her other hand came up, covering his, locking his fingers in place.

Kōya’s ancient instincts suddenly screamed a warning. He felt the shift in her failing mana.

"Wait."

Yuna smiled through her tears. "I don’t want them to take this from me."

Kōya’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "No." He tried to pull his hand away.

Yuna held his hand with a sudden, desperate firmness. "Kōya."

"No! Stop!"

"You have to let me choose this."

His breathing stopped entirely. "Yuna, please..."

She looked directly into his eyes, her gaze anchoring him. "I don’t want my last memory of this world to be of them." Her voice remained incredibly gentle. "I want it to be you."

Kōya shook his head violently, tears flying from his face. "No. I won’t do it."

Yuna’s forehead touched his again. "You saved me."

"I didn’t!"

"You did."

"I couldn’t save you!"

"You saved the part of me that actually mattered." Her hands tightened around his, pressing his palm harder against her chest.

Then, she acted.

She forced the absolute last, dying spark of her lightning aura to surge upward, bypassing the curse, and driving directly into Kōya’s hand, forcing his dark aura to instinctively react in defense.

Kōya felt the sudden, catastrophic warmth against his palm as his own magic flared uncontrollably to meet hers.

His eyes widened in absolute horror. "Yuna!"

He tried desperately to pull his hand away, to sever the connection, but she held him there, accepting the lethal surge of his energy directly into her failing heart.

Tears spilled freely from both their eyes.

Her breath caught sharply. A thin, bright line of blood touched the corner of her lips.

Kōya’s entire body began shaking uncontrollably. "Why?"

Yuna wrapped her arms loosely around his neck. He caught her immediately, burying his face against her shoulder, holding her as tightly as her failing body could manage.

"I cared about someone for the first time," she whispered into his ear, her voice fading.

Kōya couldn’t speak. He couldn’t breathe.

"I loved someone for the first time." She rested her cheek against his chest, listening to his frantic heartbeat. "It was you."

Her voice trembled, losing its anchor to the physical world. "And if I have to leave this world today... I would rather leave by your hands than be taken by some nameless monster who never even knew my name."

Kōya’s eyes squeezed shut, a silent, agonizing sob tearing through his chest.

Yuna smiled against him. "You’re not like them, Kōya." Her fingers weakly brushed the hair at the nape of his neck. "I always knew."

Kōya opened his eyes, staring blankly at the smoke. "You knew?"

"That something inside you was different." She smiled faintly, her breathing growing incredibly shallow. "I knew you carried a deep, terrible darkness."

Kōya’s expression broke entirely.

"But I also knew you." She patted his chest weakly. "The person buried beneath it all." Her eyes softened, fixing on his face one last time. "You’re my hero, Kōya. You will always be my hero."

The words struck deeper than any weapon he had faced across two centuries of war.

Suddenly, Kōya’s left hand, still pressed against her chest, began to faintly glow.

He looked down through the tears. A soft, golden-white light had appeared beneath his skin. The power within him was responding to her words. But it was not the suffocating, violent aura of the Demon Lord.

It was something older. Something inherited. Something that had always existed quietly alongside the darkness, dormant and waiting.

The Hero’s power. Seiya’s legacy.

The light traveled from his heart, surging through his arm, and pooling into his hand.

Yuna gasped softly.

The curse immediately reacted to the holy light. The black, jagged markings crawling across her body began to violently fracture and recede, hissing as they burned away.

Kōya stared in shock. "What...?"

The light spread rapidly from his palm. The curse tried to resist, digging its claws in, but it couldn’t hold against the absolute purity of the aura.

But it was too late to save the physical vessel. The damage to her core was already done.

Instead, something inside Yuna was beginning to gently separate. Not her body.

Her soul.

Kōya felt it. A strange, ethereal weight lifting from inside his arms, transcending the dying flesh.

Yuna’s expression changed. The lines of agonizing pain vanished from her face. Her breathing became impossibly calm. She looked down at herself, genuinely surprised.

"It doesn’t hurt anymore."

Kōya stared at her. The curse was still ravaging the shell of her body, but the pain could no longer reach the deepest part of her. Her soul was becoming free, bathed in the golden light.

Kōya’s eyes widened in realization. "Yuna..."

She smiled, looking up at him with absolute peace. "I’m not afraid."

The light intensified, blinding in the gray morning. Kōya could feel her slipping away, passing beyond the veil.

"No." His fingers tightened desperately in the fabric of his jacket. "Stay."

Yuna looked at him, her form beginning to blur at the edges. "I can’t."

"Stay!"

"I’ll wait for you."

His tears fell freely, landing on her fading face. "Where?"

She smiled, reaching up to touch his cheek one last time. "Wherever I am."

The curse finally consumed the very last reserve of strength in her physical body. Her form began to silently break apart, fracturing into thousands of tiny, glowing particles of light and ash.

Kōya held her tighter, trying to physically cage the light. "Yuna!"

She looked at him one final time, her voice echoing not in the air, but directly in his mind.

*I’ll be waiting for your embrace.*

Her voice became a soft, fading whisper.

*In every life.*

The light surrounding her soul flared brilliantly. Kōya could no longer feel the physical weight of her body in his arms. There was only her presence. Only the overwhelming warmth of her soul resting gently against his hands.

"I’ll find you," his voice trembled, a vow sworn to the universe itself. "No matter what shape you take. I’ll find you."

Yuna smiled.

*I know.*

Her physical body dissolved entirely. The curse collapsed with it, having nothing left to feed on.

Gray ash drifted softly through Kōya’s empty fingers. The last, glowing fragments of Yuna’s physical form scattered into the cold morning wind, carried away over the burning town.

But her soul remained for a few seconds longer. A small, radiant, golden presence hovered in the air before him. It was not a ghost. It was not a corpse. It was something infinitely lighter. Something entirely untouched by the horrors of the world.

Kōya reached out toward the light. His scarred hand passed harmlessly through it.

Yuna’s laughter echoed softly in his mind. It was the exact same laugh he had heard beside the lake. The same brilliant girl. The same incredible warmth. Just no longer bound to a fragile human body.

Kōya’s tears continued falling in silence. "I love you."

*I love you too.*

The golden light began to slowly fade, rising upward into the sky.

Kōya reached desperately after it, his hand grasping empty air. "Yuna!"

*I’ll be waiting.*

Then, she completely disappeared.

The morning became utterly, devastatingly silent.

Kōya remained on his knees on the cracked slate roof. His arms were still wrapped protectively around empty air.

For several agonizing seconds, he didn’t move. He didn’t breathe.

Then, his face crumpled.

A sound escaped his throat. It wasn’t a tactical command. It wasn’t a roar of anger. It wasn’t a scream of vengeance.

It was pure, unadulterated grief.
