Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 37: The Boy Who Returned to the Battlefield
Kōya stumbled to a halt on the cold stone, the breath rattling in his lungs.
He raised his hand to touch the shimmering golden wall, but his fingers met solid, impenetrable magic. The ancient barrier had sealed itself flawlessly into place, a towering monument of light. And he was trapped on the wrong side of it.
Instead, the absolute safety of the sanctuary felt like ash in his mouth. He turned his head slowly, looking back through the transparent wall of ancient magic.
Beyond that glowing perimeter, the battlefield remained a chaotic, churning storm of fire, screaming steel, and brutal close-quarters fighting. The remaining adventurers—the men and women who had bought the caravans time with their own blood—were still out there, fighting a desperate rearguard action.
Some were attempting a fighting retreat, backing slowly toward the gate, while others were deliberately throwing themselves into the demonic tide, holding the line so that the last stragglers could limp toward safety.
He tightened his fists until the leather of his gloves groaned. He had stood by and watched the world take someone he loved. Furthermore, he was absolutely, unequivocally done watching from the sidelines.
Through the transparent barrier, he could see the professor moving laterally across the protected courtyard, desperately organizing the retreat, while outside on the blood-soaked stone, an exhausted adventurer was fighting a losing battle against a hulking demon rushing his blind side.
Kōya didn’t hesitate. He drew his blade, planting his boots firmly on the bridge as the nearest collapsing defensive formation reeled under the assault.
He reached them just as a second, winged demon folded its leathery limbs and dropped from the smoke above.
The dark vaults within Kōya’s soul tore open. Viscous, violet-black flames erupted across his shoulders and arms, his demonic aura flaring with the destructive weight of absolute grief.
The falling demon’s heavy claws collided squarely with Kōya’s reinforced forearm.
*BOOM!*
The kinetic shockwave cratered the stone beneath Kōya’s boots, but he didn’t buckle. He twisted his hips, redirecting the creature’s immense falling momentum, and slammed his palm directly into its chest.
The demon was violently launched sideways, skipping across the stone road like a skipped stone before crashing into a ruined wagon.
The exhausted adventurer staggered back, staring at the boy wreathed in dark fire.
"You again?!"
Kōya barely glanced at him, his dark eyes tracking the sky. Another winged variant was circling, banking through the thick smoke to initiate a dive.
"There are too many of them."
"Then get your ass back behind the shield!" the adventurer barked, raising his heavy sword with trembling arms.
Kōya shook his head, shifting his footing into a flawless, grounded stance.
"No. I will fight."
The adventurer didn’t have the breath left to argue. Three massive, armored ground troops roared and broke ranks, rushing them in a coordinated wedge formation.
Kōya moved.
His body seemed to vanish, blurring forward in a sudden, explosive burst of concentrated demonic energy.
He bypassed the lead demon’s heavy swing entirely, stepping directly into its guard, and drove his fist squarely into its sternum.
*CRACK.*
The creature’s chest cavity caved inward, and it flew backward into the advancing horde. The second demon lunged from Kōya’s left flank, sweeping a rusted halberd low to shatter his knees. Kōya leaped lightly over the sweeping haft, twisting in midair, and drove a brutal, descending elbow into the juncture of the beast’s neck and shoulder.
As he landed, a shadow fell over him. The third demon plummeted from above, claws extended.
Kōya didn’t look up. He felt the shift in atmospheric pressure. Black flames pooled aggressively around his right leg as he executed a flawless, spinning upward kick.
His boot connected with the diving creature’s jaw, snapping its neck with a sound like a breaking tree branch and sending it crashing, lifelessly, into the dirt.
Kōya landed smoothly, exhaling a long, steady breath. His lungs were burning.
The chaotic battle raged on around him, but he quickly realized that the tactical dynamics of the field had fundamentally shifted.
The demons were looking at him.
Not all of them, and not immediately. But one towering brute paused mid-swing, its heavy head turning slowly toward Kōya’s position. Then another stopped dragging a corpse, its red eyes locking onto the boy.
Then another.
Kōya felt a cold, prickling sensation crawl across his skin. The collective attention of the horde was actively pivoting.
A winged demon hovering above sniffed the smoke-filled air, its pupils dilating aggressively.
"That aura..."
A heavily scarred beast on the ground turned its entire body toward him, its mandibles clicking.
"Demonic energy."
Kōya froze, recognizing the shift in their posture.
The creature’s expression morphed from primal confusion into ravenous excitement.
"It’s enormous. A lord’s core."
A second demon snarled, casually tossing a wounded human aside.
"Forget the humans! Take the boy!"
Like a dam bursting, several dozen demons suddenly broke off from their engagements with the caravans and the adventurers.
Kōya’s eyes widened as the horde reoriented.
They were converging directly on his position, drawn by the intoxicating, ancient signature of the dark power he was openly wielding.
Behind them, the stunned adventurers used the sudden reprieve to pull the remaining civilians toward the golden barrier, desperately holding the weakened line.
Kōya looked at the approaching mass of muscle, iron, and teeth. Then, he looked back over his shoulder toward the glowing, protected domain of the fortress.
His friends were safe inside. The vulnerable caravans had crossed the threshold. The professor was still alive, organizing the retreat. But if this concentrated demonic force remained on the road to fight him, the sheer collateral damage would massacre the stragglers and shatter the remaining adventurers.
Kōya’s analytical mind locked onto the only viable tactical solution.
He turned his back on the safety of the fortress.
And he ran.
"HEY!" an adventurer shouted after him, his voice thick with disbelief.
"KID!"
Kōya didn’t stop.
He channeled his dark aura into his legs, tearing down the stone embankment and plunging directly into the dense, shadowed tree line of the Silverwood Forest.
The demons immediately gave chase, abandoning the bridge entirely.
Thick branches whipped violently across Kōya’s face, scratching his cheeks as he navigated the treacherous, root-choked terrain.
He didn’t look back.
He ran deeper into the suffocating gloom of the ancient woods.
Faster.
The pursuit was deafening.
The heavy, uncoordinated footsteps of the horde shook the damp earth behind him, snapping heavy timber and uprooting brush.
"Don’t let him escape!" one of the larger variants roared, its voice echoing through the canopy.
Kōya pushed his muscles harder, letting the demonic energy burn through his circulatory system like liquid fire. He could hear them closing the distance.
There were too many to fight in an open engagement.
But that was precisely what he wanted. As long as they were hunting him through the timber, they were leaving the caravans alone.
He was the bait.
He glanced over his shoulder.
A winged demon had folded its leathery appendages and was diving silently between the massive tree trunks, closing in on his blind spot.
Kōya abruptly dropped his center of gravity, sliding on the wet moss.
The creature’s razor-sharp talons passed mere inches over his hair.
Using his momentum, Kōya spun on his knees, driving an open palm upward into the beast’s exposed abdomen.
Dark flames violently exploded from his hand, blasting the demon backward until it shattered against the trunk of a massive oak.
Before Kōya could stand, another grounded creature lunged from the brush behind him.
He pushed off the dirt, executing a backward handspring over the charging beast, landed lightly on a low-hanging, thick branch, and immediately vaulted off it to continue his sprint deeper into the woods.
Then, the dense tree line suddenly broke.
Kōya vaulted over a rotting log and landed softly in the center of a wide, muddy clearing. He spun around, drawing his short blade, his chest heaving.
The demons poured out from the tree line like a flood of dark water. Dozens of them. They fanned out rapidly, enclosing the perimeter of the clearing, their glowing eyes locking onto their prey.
Kōya slowly raised his fists, settling into a perfectly balanced, lethal stance.
"So, you followed me."
One of the larger, armored demons stepped forward from the pack, its lips curling back to expose rows of jagged teeth.
"You carry a profoundly unusual power, human."
Kōya stared at it, his face an impenetrable mask of stone.
The creature smiled, a grotesque stretching of flesh. "The stench of the deepest levels of the Demon Realm is all over you."
Kōya’s expression hardened into something entirely devoid of mercy.
"I do not care what I smell like."
Thick, violet-black flames rose aggressively around his forearms, hissing in the damp forest air. He lowered his stance further, inviting the slaughter.
"If you want this power... come and try to take it."
The demons charged simultaneously.
The battle lasted only minutes, but to Kōya’s burning lungs and straining muscles, it felt like an agonizing eternity.
He fought with absolute, ruthless efficiency.
His demonic strength allowed him to tear through the ordinary variants with devastating ease. He side-stepped a heavy thrust from a spear, catching the wooden haft under his arm, and drove his blade cleanly through the attacker’s throat.
He pivoted instantly, entering a high-speed parallel bind with a dual-wielding mercenary demon.
Their blades sparked and ground together before Kōya violently redirected the creature’s momentum, throwing it into the path of another charging beast.
