Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 1025: The Money Has Been Found
Something’s off!
Clearly something’s off!
10 million in cash was entrusted to just two security guards to lock inside a house, with no supervision, and neither the accountant nor the boss was present.
How is that possible?
“When did they come out of the bank?”
Lu Chuan noted the time a few people came out of the bank.
The bank where they withdrew the money is the only branch in North Haizhou City, located on Beizhou Road. It’s about 25 kilometers from the mine.
Traffic isn’t heavy on the north side of the city, and the road from the bank to the mine is relatively clear. Generally, driving from the Beizhou Road branch takes about 30 minutes.
“The day of the crime, 3:30 in the afternoon.”
Chen Jiang remembers it clearly; they left the bank on the day of the crime at 3:30 PM.
Others noted Lu Chuan’s inquiry about the timing and realized there might be something illogical here.
Wang Zhaokai quickly dug out the front gate photo.
“Haha, something’s off! It’s indeed off!”
Wang Zhaokai froze the video on an SUV.
“This is the SUV the four helper workers rode in. They returned first, and they entered the courtyard at 4:03.”
That makes sense.
The four who helped rode the SUV back from the bank at 4:03, entering the gate at this time seemed normal for a half-hour trip over 25 kilometers.
But then Wang Zhaokai continued checking the video.
The van carrying 10 million in cash entered the mine gate at…
Five o’clock!
Their van drove on the road for an entire hour, arriving almost half an hour later than the other four.
For such a long time?
What were they doing on the road?
“Inside job!”
Sun Biao eagerly: “It’s definitely an inside job.”
They earlier suggested the possibility of an inside job, but at the crime scene, there’s no sign of extensive money transport.
After extensive investigation, no clue was found on how they moved the money out, so the only possibility is there wasn’t any thief.
Today’s video confirms it.
Whether it was two security guards carrying empty boxes or the van with 10 million cash returning half an hour late, these are all suspicious points.
“Captain Lu, what do we do now?”
Chen Jiang said excitedly.
What to do?
Of course, arrest them.
From what we see now, quite a few people were involved in this case. At least two security guards involved should be aware.
Also the SUV driver, that driver might be okay, but where did the van driver take the vehicle? Where did they go after leaving Beizhou Bank, swapping the money? The driver should know.
Then there’s mine owner Zhang Dabao.
“Immediately arrest the relevant personnel and conduct a full interrogation.”
“Yes!”
With these two videos as evidence, everyone quickly sprang into action.
Arresting isn’t difficult; most are at the mine, only Zhang Dabao is at home.
Two hours later, Zhang Dabao, two security guards, the mine’s accounting staff, and the drivers at the time were all brought back to the Criminal Investigation Team for isolation interrogation.
“I really don’t know.”
One security guard wouldn’t say a word.
He insisted that during the crime, he was drugged unconscious, and he doesn’t know who did it, nor did he see anyone. He only found the door pried open and the money gone the next day.
“Song Xiaopeng, at this point, you’re still lying. We’ve caught you, proving we already have certain evidence.”
Chen Jiang sneered.
“Don’t think that staying silent means you’re not involved. You’re not alone in this case; the other security guard is involved, as well as your boss Zhang Dabao and the van driver who moved the money, plus your company’s accountant—everyone is being interrogated separately. Do you think staying silent will work, that they won’t speak either?”
That hit home; Chen Xiaopeng’s expression changed a bit.
Chen Jiang continued, “Tell me, what benefits did you get from these cases, how much money did they give you?”
“Zhang Dabao is about to sell that mine, and once he gets the money, he’ll run away. You workers won’t get a single penny.”
What?
Song Xiaopeng was stunned.
“What did you say? Zhang Dabao is selling the mine?”
“Didn’t you know?”
“No!”
Song Xiaopeng couldn’t believe it: “He wouldn’t sell the mine. He promised us promotions next year, one as head of security, the other as deputy manager, how could he sell the mine?”
On the other side.
There are five or six involved; not everyone is steadfast.
The other security guard who moved boxes with Song Xiaopeng explained everything after brief questioning.
“This whole thing isn’t related to us; it was entirely planned by Zhang Dabao. We just moved the boxes, then he drugged us, and that was it.”
The fastest confessions came from the accountants.
“We were just participants; in reality, it was all swapped by Zhang Dabao. He gave me 50,000 yuan, telling us not to speak about it.”
The mine’s accountant was clearer.
“The money belonged to the mine’s sole proprietor, Zhang Dabao, so moving it didn’t really concern us. He just didn’t want to give this money as bonuses to the miners.”
The accountant thinks the money is all Zhang Dabao’s, and since he won’t give it to workers, he can do whatever he wants.
“That day, we withdrew the money, and halfway we drove to his house exchanging the money. Then we returned, but the box was empty, no money was left.”
The accountant continued: “Both security guards knew this. Their supposed oversight was just an act; the box was empty. At night, they broke the box themselves to simulate theft, and in the corridor, Zhang Dabao had prearranged someone, likely his brother-in-law, to drug them. Then he hid until the next day before leaving.”
Sun Biao then questioned: “Are you sure the money is at Zhang Dabao’s home?”
“Not his house, but a villa on Beizhou Road. The villa housed his mistress, who left, and now he uses it as a storage site for valuables, including the money currently in the villa.”
Another interrogation room.
Wang Zhaokai was interrogating Zhang Dabao.
“Boss Zhang, speak up; filing a false police report and ended up keeping the money for yourself, what’s the story? Do you know what crime that is?”
