Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 940: Are the Police Watching You?
The Tabby Cat was slightly stunned.
For this identity, there were basically no family members left. His parents had died early in a car accident, and there was nothing at home. You could say he had no siblings or immediate relatives at all.
This was also one of the important reasons why the Tabby Cat chose the identity of Zhao Kai back then.
So why was the Smiling Tiger suddenly asking this question?
The Tabby Cat’s mind spun rapidly.
Just now, the Smiling Tiger had taken the phone handed over by his underling, looked at some message on it, and his expression suddenly changed.
From his expression it was clear that the message was very important.
But the Tabby Cat didn’t know what exactly it was.
Yet after reading that message, the other man immediately asked if he was from Haizhou City and whether he still had relatives here, what was the situation?
Was the message on the phone related to him?
It probably was!
But what kind of relation?
His undercover identity exposed?
No!
The Tabby Cat immediately rejected that judgment.
If his undercover identity had been exposed, then the Smiling Tiger would definitely not be asking him questions; what would be waiting for him would be a knife.
But if it wasn’t his identity being exposed, what else could it be?
Family???
What exactly did the Smiling Tiger mean?
Several thoughts flashed through the Tabby Cat’s mind in an instant, but there was no hesitation in his words.
"I don’t really have any family left, my parents died early, I’m the only one at home." Although the Tabby Cat hadn’t seen the Smiling Tiger much over the years, he had spent a long time studying this man.
Although he looked kind and always wore an unchanging smile on his face, in reality he was extremely ruthless, and his methods were vicious; he never showed any mercy.
What was even more frightening was that the Smiling Tiger was deeply suspicious by nature; he seemed to trust no one.
Some of the leading figures in the organization had been replaced quite a few times over the past ten years.
The old-timers who had once followed Uncle Kun to fight their way up, then later defected to the Smiling Tiger, were now either dead or retired; basically there were no familiar old faces left in this organization.
Although Smiling Tiger didn’t show himself often, his grip on the organization had been steadily growing stronger. He had vaguely already become the head of the three major new-generation factions.
What he hated most was people hesitating when answering his questions.
So even though many thoughts flashed through the Tabby Cat’s mind, he still instinctively spoke out the specific situation regarding Zhao Kai.
The Smiling Tiger said nothing. He just glanced at the phone and then asked, "Besides your parents, anyone else?"
Anyone else?
This time the Tabby Cat hesitated slightly.
A glint flashed in the Smiling Tiger’s eyes; he narrowed them a little. Only then did the Tabby Cat continue, "I really don’t have any relatives here in Haizhou City. I think I have a second uncle in Haizhou, but I haven’t seen him for more than ten years. Ever since I went out ten years ago, I haven’t contacted him. I don’t even know if he’s still in Haizhou."
This hesitation was deliberate on the Tabby Cat’s part.
Because when the Smiling Tiger asked if he had relatives in Haizhou City, there were two elements there: first, the place was Haizhou City; second, relatives.
Facing the first question, the Tabby Cat’s answer couldn’t be hesitant, couldn’t even show the slightest doubt.
Because when it came to direct relatives, Zhao Kai would definitely be able to rattle it off.
But the second question required some thought.
If at that moment the Tabby Cat could just blurt out the situation about Zhao Kai’s second uncle, that would seem a bit fake.
After all, it was only a second uncle, and one he hadn’t contacted for many years. Zhao Kai pausing a bit when answering would be the correct reaction.
And the Tabby Cat deliberately emphasized that they hadn’t contacted each other for more than ten years—this was the point.
Ten years with no contact...
The Smiling Tiger thought for a moment, picked up the phone and handed it to the Tabby Cat. "Take a look."
"I just arrived in Haizhou, and you’ve already been targeted by the cops."
The cops?!
The Tabby Cat took the phone and looked, puzzled, at a text message on the screen.
"The Happy Road Police Station is currently hunting Fourth Brother. Last night..."
The text message on the phone wasn’t long, just a few dozen characters, but it clearly explained how last night Zhao Dejun was pressed over his debts and someone stabbed the creditor.
After reading it, the Tabby Cat looked slightly puzzled.
What was going on?
The police in Haizhou City were actually looking for him!
Of course the police in Haizhou City were looking for the Tabby Cat—he was very clear on that.
Three days ago he was supposed to meet up with his colleagues from the Haizhou City Public Security Bureau Anti-drug Detachment, but because the Smiling Tiger arrived, he’d been taken away by the Smiling Tiger’s men, and up until now he hadn’t been able to contact the outside world.
So the cops from the Anti-drug Detachment looking for him was normal.
But what was going on with the people from the police station looking for him? Zhao Dejun was exactly Zhang Kai’s second uncle, and something like that had happened last night.
"Brother Hu... I was at the villa the whole time yesterday."
The one they were looking for wasn’t Zhao Kai, because he had been at the villa all day yesterday, and there was no way to fake that.
So who was the person who impersonated him and stabbed Zhao Dejun’s creditor?
The Smiling Tiger was also very clear about the problem here.
Setting aside the uncle-nephew relationship between Zhao Dejun and Zhao Kai, there was one suspicious piece of information in that text message.
Namely, the person the police were looking for definitely wasn’t Zhao Kai.
Because the other man hadn’t gone out at all last night; he had been in the villa for the past three days straight.
This was exactly why the Smiling Tiger had had Zhao Kai brought under control three days in advance.
If Zhao Kai had problems, then disappearing suddenly for three days would definitely leave some traces showing up somewhere.
This was the Smiling Tiger’s long-standing habit. No matter who in his syndicate he met with officially, he would always use this method to get control of the person first, and then meet.
The method was crude and its timeliness was poor, but precisely because of this crude method, it had already saved the Smiling Tiger once or twice.
Back then, two of his old man Uncle Kun’s underlings had tried to use a meeting with him as a chance to take him out.
But with a three-day buffer, whatever scheme the other side had would naturally show some flaws on their end, and the Smiling Tiger could calmly deal with it.
"I know you’ve been here the whole time."
The Smiling Tiger was a bit puzzled.
Clearly Zhao Kai didn’t know about this matter; otherwise he wouldn’t have this expression right now.
But who exactly had impersonated Zhao Kai to save Zhao Dejun?
Why had the other person impersonated Zhao Kai? Was the purpose really only to save Zhao Dejun?
Or was that just a random excuse?
This whole incident might have nothing to do with Zhao Dejun; the real purpose could have been just to stab that victim.
As for impersonating Zhao Kai, that was merely to conceal their own identity and divert the police’s attention.
So the Smiling Tiger’s suspicion of Zhao Kai actually wasn’t that strong. Otherwise he wouldn’t have let him see the message on the phone at all—he’d just send him off with a single knife and be done with it.
"Alright, you stay here for the next few days, don’t go out."
With that, the Smiling Tiger glanced at the middle-aged man beside him and left first.
"Yes, Brother Hu!"
Zhao Kai hurriedly stood up to see him off.
