Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 949: All Captured
There were two people in the office where the preliminary equipment room had been opened, and one of them was Liang Naifeng.
Lu Chuan went for Liang Naifeng the moment he rushed in, tackling him to the floor, but right after that the guy next to him suddenly whipped out a gun.
When Lu Chuan came in, the man behind him followed, but he didn’t have a gun in his hand, so he didn’t react in time.
Since Lu Chuan had already knocked Liang Naifeng down by then, he had no time to draw his own gun.
At that critical moment, Lu Chuan lashed out with a kick, smashing the coffee table in front of Liang Naifeng. The huge force blew the table apart in an instant, splinters spraying toward the man who was pulling the gun like a burst of rain.
Bang!
The guy was drawing his gun right as Liang Naifeng was taken down, so even with the fragments flying at him, he still managed to get the gun out.
The gun went off!
Luckily, the flying splinters blocked his line of sight, and Lu Chuan had already shifted position when he kicked the table, so the shot only grazed Lu Chuan’s left arm instead of really injuring him.
By this time, the cops who had come in behind him had all reacted.
Bang!
Chen Jiang fired decisively, hitting the man’s gun hand dead on.
The pistol dropped. "Move!"
Chen Jiang was the first to pounce, slamming the man to the floor.
Meanwhile, Gao Feng had already led the Haizhou City Public Security Bureau Anti-drug Detachment to complete the villa’s encirclement.
"Go!"
They kicked the door open and rushed in, catching two men in the living room cleaning their guns.
The firefight exploded in an instant.
Bang bang bang!
The gunshots were sharp, cracking like firecrackers.
Gao Feng rolled forward, diving into the living room, then ducked in behind a staircase.
Right after that, a burst of bullets was poured out; the other anti-drug officers did the same.
The two men in the hall reacted fast, and their guns were right at hand, but they were outnumbered. By the time they got their bearings, several officers had already stormed into the room.
Facing three or four times their own firepower, and with the anti-drug cops laying down tight, coordinated fire, the two of them were cut down after just one volley.
One took a heavy hit at the corner of his eye and died on the spot; the other took three rounds to the chest and abdomen, blood gushing, but he was still breathing.
Gao Feng rushed out from his cover by the stairs, kicked both guns away, and leaned over the one still alive to question him.
"Where’s Smiling Tiger?"
Right now the guy just wheezed, blood bubbling up from his mouth, giving only dying gasps and no way to answer Gao Feng’s question.
"Upstairs!"
When the gunfight broke out, the team had already come in from the kitchen window and the main door and several other points on the first floor, so there was no one left covering other positions. They headed straight for the second-floor bedrooms.
Fully armed, everyone moved up the stairs step by step, guns raised.
If anyone was up there, the gunfight downstairs would definitely have alarmed them, so anyone upstairs would be ready by now.
But to Gao Feng’s surprise, there was no one on the second floor.
"Captain Gao! Nobody here!"
Gao Feng frowned. Had he slipped away?
Impossible.
When they rushed in just now, the two perps in the hall didn’t react at all, which proved they had no prior knowledge of the operation.
Smiling Tiger’s rented vehicle was still parked outside the villa, so there was every chance this place was his lair.
The bedroom windows on the second floor were all tightly shut, not opened at all. Besides, if he’d escaped from the second floor, the officers surrounding the villa downstairs would definitely have seen him.
So he must have left the villa in advance.
Fuck!
Gao Feng stomped the floor in frustration.
He’d thought they’d be able to grab Smiling Tiger in this operation, but it turned out the guy wasn’t even here.
While Gao Feng was stuck, not knowing what to do next, Lu Chuan’s side had already wrapped up.
"Liang Naifeng?"
Liang Naifeng nodded, his face ashen.
The fact that the cops had found him here meant he was already exposed.
"Officer, I want to report someone!"
Knowing there was no way to wriggle out of this, Liang Naifeng suddenly thought of something.
"This man!" Liang Naifeng suddenly pointed at the guy who had just drawn the gun and shouted, "This man is Smiling Tiger! Hurry up and arrest him!"
"He’s Interpol’s number-one most wanted. He came to Haizhou City this time to negotiate with a northern drug trafficking syndicate."
"I have his contact details. They’re already in Haizhou now!"
"I can help you catch them!"
What Liang Naifeng said made Lu Chuan freeze.
He’d seen photos of Smiling Tiger; Tabby Cat had already passed him some intel.
But this guy didn’t look much like the man in the photo Tabby Cat gave him.
Lu Chuan stepped forward, looking at the middle-aged man whose arm had been punctured by a bullet, teeth bared in pain.
"He’s wearing a mask!"
Liang Naifeng suddenly shouted.
Smiling Tiger seemed to know he was doomed.
So he didn’t care if Liang Naifeng sold him out.
And if he were in Liang Naifeng’s shoes, he’d make the same choice.
Using his uninjured left hand, he rubbed his face. With that, an extra thin, skin-like mask peeled away from his features.
"How did you find me?"
Smiling Tiger was certain this operation of his was flawless.
On this trip to Haizhou, the advance planning was known only to Old Knife; nobody else knew, not even Liang Naifeng or Tabby Cat.
Liang Naifeng was a plant he’d bought in Haizhou City ten years ago, but he’d never let him take part in any drug business, just kept him in reserve for emergencies.
The guy was completely clean; the cops couldn’t find a single clue on him, so Smiling Tiger hadn’t hesitated to activate him for this trip to Haizhou City.
As for the others involved in this operation, apart from a few enforcers, Tabby Cat was the one he valued most. But Tabby Cat had been sent back to Haizhou City earlier on a separate mission; he had no idea Smiling Tiger himself would be coming to Haizhou.
Was it Old Knife who betrayed him?
Impossible!
No matter how cautious a man is, there are always one or two people he trusts. Old Knife was the one Smiling Tiger felt he could trust.
Overseas, Old Knife had had plenty of chances to kill him. If Old Knife was going to betray him, there was no need to run to the domestic cops.
Tabby Cat’s guess had been right: Old Knife hadn’t sold him out. When Lu Chuan took Old Knife in just now, the man hadn’t said a single word.
Smiling Tiger’s arrest this time could be called a fluke.
Gao Feng had been worried something might have gone wrong with Tabby Cat’s undercover work, so he asked Lu Chuan to help investigate.
That investigation turned up some interesting threads, which eventually led them to Smiling Tiger.
In fact, if Smiling Tiger had trusted Tabby Cat and hadn’t sent Old Knife out to sniff around for intel, he wouldn’t have been exposed.
Of course, the moment he made contact with Tabby Cat in Haizhou City, sooner or later he was going to be exposed no matter what.
