Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 953: Donglai County Pursuit
Motorcycle!
Over the past few days, Zhang Yongzhi’s motorcycle has been a key clue for the police investigation.
However, the motorcycle is quite mobile, making it easy to avoid some surveillance cameras, so there haven’t been any valuable clues so far.
In all the surveillance videos reviewed so far, the motorcycle was only spotted once in a surveillance camera on the highway from the High-tech Zone of Haizhou City to Donglai County.
It is impossible for Zhang Yongzhi to remove the license plate while escaping on the motorcycle, because if stopped by the police, he’d be detained for driving without a license.
Therefore, Zhang Yongzhi must have had the license plate attached while riding the motorcycle.
Thus, during yesterday’s investigation, Donglan County set a focused search area.
The relevant statistical information has been disseminated through various channels, and finally, there are results.
"Where are you now?"
Lu Chuan immediately inquired.
Since Zhang Yongzhi’s motorcycle was found in Southeast County, all investigative forces should now gather towards Donglai County.
"We are currently rushing to the highway in Donglai County."
Wang Zhaokai’s team got the news and immediately drove to Donglai County; he made the call to Lu Chuan while on the road.
"Good, head over there first, I’m also heading to Donglai County now."
"Yes!"
An hour and a half later.
Lu Chuan finally arrived in Donglai County.
Donglai County is a township under Haizhou City. It’s not large and is close to Haizhou City.
However, Donglai County’s textile and light chemical industries are quite developed, attracting many migrant workers, making it densely populated.
Donglai County Police Bureau.
"Vice Director Zhang, sorry for the trouble this time."
Greeting Lu Chuan was Vice Director Zhang Tianlai, who is in charge of criminal investigations at the Southeast County Police Bureau.
"Captain Lu, I apologize sincerely. Director Yongdong has been out training these past days, otherwise he would have personally welcomed you."
Though Zhang Tianlai is the vice director of Donglai County, he holds the same rank as Lu Chuan, both being section-level officers.
He’s referring to Director Yongdong, the head of Donglai County Police Bureau.
Regarding Zhang Tianlai’s humble attitude, firstly it’s due to Lu Chuan’s personal capabilities, which are highly respected within the Haizhou City police system; secondly, Donglai County frequently requires Lu Chuan’s team’s help with crime scene investigations like fingerprints and footprints analysis.
Although Lu Chuan has shifted his focus away from the Crime Scene Investigation office of the Criminal Investigation Team, he remains the office’s director.
And many complex cases that the Crime Scene Investigation office can’t resolve still require Lu Chuan’s personal intervention.
"Director Zhang, you’re too kind; our bureau is taking this case very seriously, instructing us to quickly capture the criminal suspect. So, once we got the news, we rushed over immediately."
Zhang Tianlai nodded.
He heard about the Beihong Village family massacre case during a morning meeting with the city bureau. The case has a significant impact, but the investigation is relatively straightforward; the suspect has been identified—now the issue is that he’s on the run.
With clues indicating the suspect has arrived in Donglai County, Zhang Tianlai will naturally cooperate fully.
Understanding Lu Chuan’s urgency, Zhang Tianlai did not dwell on formalities and directly discussed the case.
"This morning, we received information that someone stole the criminal suspect’s motorcycle and sold it at the second-hand motorcycle market."
Zhang Tianlai understands the importance of this case well, so upon receiving the clue, he immediately personally oversaw the investigation of the whole incident’s origins.
"Currently, that thief is still being searched for; the second-hand motorcycle boss has provided a detailed account."
Zhang Tianlai led the way: "He’s in the interrogation room now. I’ll take you to see."
"Good!"
Five minutes later.
Lu Chuan observed the interrogation from the surveillance room.
Because Lu Chuan departed relatively late, Wang Zhaokai and his team arrived in Donglai County over half an hour earlier.
After arriving, Wang Zhaokai immediately coordinated with them for questioning of the second-hand motorcycle boss, as well as the arrested thief, who is currently being interrogated.
"I really don’t know..."
The second-hand motorcycle boss feels quite wronged.
In their trade, dishonest practices aren’t uncommon, but usually, things don’t escalate.
This time was different; once he realized this motorcycle belonged to the suspect in the family massacre reported on TV, he panicked.
"The person who sold me the bike claimed it was his. When I asked why there were no papers, he said he hadn’t had the time to handle it, and since he couldn’t ride it, he had to sell."
Hum!
Wang Zhaokai naturally did not believe the second-hand motorcycle boss’s words.
Nowadays, motorcycles and even electric bikes need official papers to be ridden legally.
Accepting a motorcycle with no clear provenance, how could anyone believe the owner couldn’t find the time to handle the papers and simply sold it off?
But this kind of motorcycle is very cheap.
The thief couldn’t formalize the bike’s papers, but the second-hand motorcycle boss could.
They have many bikes; with a bit of assembly, they can register the paperwork.
However, Wang Zhaokai didn’t delve deeply into the boss’s other business practices.
All he needs to determine is if this second-hand motorcycle boss had any contact with the suspect Zhang Yongzhi.
It seems they didn’t.
"Who sold you the bike, Song Baoguo? Since you know the situation with this motorcycle, you should realize how crucial finding the thief is now."
Of course, Song Baoguo knows it’s important.
But he truly doesn’t know the specifics about the thief.
"Officer, I’ve already said, I hardly know him, only that he’s called Gou Dan and operates frequently in our area, but where he lives and whom he knows, I really don’t know."
He was merely attracted by the cheap price, occasionally fencing stolen goods.
Song Baoguo, wiping his nose and tears, "Officer, for my contribution to your case, could you go easy on me? This incident really isn’t connected to me."
Song Baoguo, upon discovering this situation, did consider dismantling the motorcycle and saying nothing, hoping no one would find out.
Yet ultimately, he chose not to.
Because if the case remained unsolved indefinitely, and the suspect was never caught, then perhaps no one would find out.
But once the suspect is caught, and it’s discovered his motorcycle was stolen, police could follow the trail to him.
At that point, Song Baoguo wouldn’t merely face stolen goods charges, but harboring charges.
So Song Baoguo decided to report the motorcycle to the police, aiming to turn himself in.
