Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 979: Hidden Truths

People were definitely caught correctly, there’s no doubt about it.

In the interrogation room, Wang Biao faced the DNA identification analysis report with a look of bewilderment.

Wang Biao’s first reaction was, how could this be possible?

Five years had passed, and moreover, when he did it back then, he was very clandestine, leaving no trace at all.

Yet now, the DNA found in the lime plaster matched his own, which was simply absurd.

"Wang Biao, tell us, how did Zhang Mengyao die? Why did you kill her back then? And why did you seal her in the statue and then send it back to the Experimental Primary School?"

This case, during the investigation, despite the scant evidence, had many suspicious points.

First, from the current findings, there was no clue indicating that Zhang Mengyao and Wang Biao knew each other.

Meaning, if the police had followed the initial investigation direction, focusing on Zhang Mengyao’s interpersonal relationships, they would never have suspected Wang Biao.

Because the two of them were total strangers.

An Experimental Primary School teacher and a car wash boss had no intersection at all, and when Zhang Mengyao went missing, she didn’t own a car.

Furthermore, at that time, Wang Biao didn’t even have a car dealership, so how did the two come into contact?

Another point of doubt is why, after killing Zhang Mengyao, would the killer seal her body in a statue and place it in the Experimental Primary School?

This puzzled all the detectives involved.

And how exactly did the statue end up at the school remains unclear.

Five years ago, the surveillance footage was long gone, so how the statue was transported, whose approval was needed, and how the procedures were handled remain a mystery.

According to the accounts of the Experimental Primary School, there were no approval procedures or expenditures for this statue, meaning it appeared in the school out of nowhere.

That’s problematic. How did Wang Biao transport this statue into the school without arousing any suspicion back then?

So initially, the police suspected the perpetrator was most likely a colleague of Zhang Mengyao’s.

But now, the findings from Crime Scene Investigation show that an unrelated person like Wang Biao was the perpetrator.

Faced with ironclad evidence, Wang Biao couldn’t argue.

Zhang Hui conducted the interrogation personally.

"Wang Biao, the report is the initial identification analysis based on the skin flakes found in the lime powder of the deceased Zhang Mengyao’s statue."

With conclusive evidence, there was no need to beat around the bush, so Zhang Hui slammed the report down in front of Wang Biao during the interrogation.

"Explain, why are your skin tissues found in the plaster wrapping Zhang Mengyao’s body?"

Explain?

Wang Biao hung his head in dejection, explain what?

What’s there to explain, he was indeed the killer, it was just that Wang Biao hadn’t expected the police to be so competent now.

He was exceedingly careful when handling the body, and it was sealed in a plaster statue too. Wang Biao couldn’t comprehend how they discovered it.

"How did you find out?"

Wang Biao had done this kind of thing more than once or twice, he was very experienced, and he couldn’t understand why the statue, supposedly in the Experimental Primary School,

Wang Biao continued, "This statue was supposed to be in the Experimental Primary School. Even if you found it, you should’ve moved it carefully. As long as you didn’t break it, you wouldn’t find the body inside."

The statue, who would break such a thing without reason?

With Wang Biao’s words, Zhang Hui finally let out a breath.

Although they found Wang Biao’s skin tissue in the statue’s powder, if he couldn’t offer a reasonable explanation, then he was undoubtedly the killer.

But there was a fear that the opposing party had a reasonable explanation, such as he’d sold the raw materials, making it possible for his skin tissue to be mixed in the plaster statue.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case. Wang Biao’s statement confirmed he was indeed guilty.

"The old campus of the Experimental Primary School was being renovated, and workers accidentally knocked over the statue while moving it. After it shattered, it revealed the body inside."

There was no concealing this fact.

Zhang Hui replied truthfully.

Wang Biao nodded in realization, understanding now.

"Alright, tell us why you killed Zhang Mengyao. From our current investigation, it seems you didn’t know her, so why would you kill her?"

Murder requires a motive.

Before the arrest, Zhang Hui and his team had thoroughly investigated Wang Biao’s background.

Though he had a criminal record, he’d been relatively honest in the past few years, running a car wash, seemingly doing well and earning some money. Now, his financial condition was decent; he owned a house and a car.

But why would he commit murder? There was no connection between him and Zhang Mengyao, they were complete strangers, so there was no motive for murder.

Was it actually robbery, rape, or some other reason?

But if those were the reasons, why would Wang Biao seal the body in the statue and send it back to the Experimental Primary School? It didn’t make sense.

Solving a case and convicting someone involves a complete crime chain, with thorough evidence and a clear motive.

Even with the DNA report identifying Wang Biao as the culprit, it’s crucial to understand his motive, method, and the reason behind sealing the body in a statue and transporting it to the school.

"Can I have a cigarette?"

Zhang Hui nodded and personally lit a cigarette for him from the table.

During the interrogation, when a suspect asks for a cigarette, it’s usually a sign they’re ready to confess, which is a promising indicator.

Sure enough, after two puffs, Wang Biao began to confess.

"Whether you believe it or not, I didn’t kill anyone. I am not the one who killed this person."

It wasn’t you?

Zhang Hui was taken aback.

He had expected Wang Biao to confess how and why he committed the murder, but instead, he denied being the murderer.

"You didn’t kill the person, so why was your skin found in the statue wrapping the corpse?"

Wang Biao continued, "Simple, because I handled the corpse."

The corpse?

"You handled the corpse?"

Zhang Hui understood that this simple statement was loaded with information.

If Wang Biao handled the body, then who was the real murderer? And why did he help dispose of the corpse?
