Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 990: Investigation Direction

A photo of a middle-aged man appeared on the screen.

“The deceased is Wang Dezhi, not from the provincial capital, but from Tianzhou City; he was reported missing three weeks ago.”

“The report was filed by the deceased’s wife. The Tianzhou City Public Security Bureau’s precinct visited to collect the DNA information of the deceased’s son, and it was during our comparison that we matched and finally confirmed the identity.”

The identity is finally confirmed.

Now that the identity of the deceased is confirmed, Lu Chuan has discovered a lot of directional clues, which significantly reduces the difficulty of solving the case.

Judging by the handling of the deceased’s body, there must be some relationship between the murderer and the victim, and the perpetrator was able to poison the deceased’s food, indicating a rather close relationship. Now, it’s essential to determine where the victim was killed—whether in Tianzhou City or the provincial capital.”

Since the victim is from Tianzhou City, his primary relationships should be concentrated there. Investigating what he was doing in the provincial capital, and whom he met, would be relatively easier.

Wang Song continued with the report.

“After confirming the identity of the deceased, we contacted the precinct handling the case at Tianzhou City’s Public Security Bureau, and they have already sent all the relevant files back.”

Everyone then studied the missing person files of Wang Dezhi together.

According to the records, although Wang Dezhi is from Tianzhou City, he frequently traveled to the provincial capital for business, spending more than half a year there.

Wang Dezhi ran a logistics company in Tianzhou City, mainly responsible for cargo transport between Tianzhou City and the provincial capital.

His business was doing well, generally achieving an annual income of around 10 million yuan.

After Wang Dezhi went missing, people were dispatched from Tianzhou City to Haizhou City to investigate his relations before the incident, but they didn’t find significant clues, and the case stood as it was.

After roughly half an hour of analysis, the situation of the case became quite clear.

Li Donglin began to organize the next investigation direction.

“First, Song Mingguang, you will lead the thorough investigation into the circumstances of BMW car sales from three years ago in both the provincial capital and Tianzhou City. I want information on all these car owners.”

In comparison to investigating Wang Dezhi’s relationships, Li Donglin found this clue particularly important.

Considering the sales volume of this model BMW, the combined investigation in both cities shouldn’t be challenging, to say the least.

“Also, check the sales situation of Continental silent tires, especially the sales from this year. The perpetrator changed the tires, and there should be few specialty stores for such tires in both the provincial capital and Tianzhou City. Determine who bought them, and when?”

Song Mingguang nodded in agreement.

Li Donglin then turned to Wang Song: “Wang Song, your focus should be on investigating Wang Dezhi’s company situation, as well as all his relationships, focusing on his relationships in the provincial capital.”

Since Wang Dezhi disappeared and was victimized here in the provincial capital, the perpetrator is likely more active in this area.

Though we cannot entirely rule out the possibility that the crime occurred in Tianzhou City with the body being transferred to Haizhou City. However, the likelihood might be relatively lower.

Another reason Li Donglin believed the crime was committed in Haizhou City is because Wang Dezhi was in the provincial capital during his disappearance.

Based on the missing person records, Wang Dezhi was supposed to return from the provincial capital to Tianzhou City 25 days ago.

Although he worked mostly in the provincial capital, he returned monthly to Tianzhou City to be with his children and elderly family.

Wang Dezhi’s mother had a birthday 25 days ago, and he was expected to go back. He had already confirmed his return plans with his wife over the phone.

However, he did not return that day; his wife tried calling him, but the phone was turned off, and she couldn’t reach him.

Thus, Wang Dezhi’s family reported him missing to the authorities in Tianzhou City on that day.

“On the other hand, we need to conduct a thorough sweep of the road surveillance around the logistics park, which is the crime scene.”

Without the information provided by Lu Chuan, carrying out such surveillance video analysis without direction or clues would have been notably challenging. However, with the BMW car as a clue, the sweep becomes relatively simpler.

Even though the logistics park sees heavy traffic, all vehicle surveillance footage is maintained for over three months, and given the crime happened 25 days ago, if the perpetrator did transport the body by car, some traces should be found.

“This task will be handled by the Criminal Investigation Team.”

Being local to the area, the Criminal Investigation Team from the provincial Public Security Bureau is more familiar with the setting, making communications smoother with the traffic police, and they have many personnel suitable for handling such tedious work.

This case was only designated to the major crimes unit by upper management; should the major crimes unit not produce results, they might leave it to the provincial Criminal Investigation Team, who could likely find some outcomes though their Crime Scene Investigation might not be as effective as Lu Chuan’s. Even if they discovered clues, their analysis might not be as thorough as Lu Chuan’s.

However, considering that no choice remains as an important meeting in the province is upcoming, the case must be solved swiftly.

After the teams commenced action, Lu Chuan’s side faced relatively less pressure.

The Crime Scene Investigation team gathered many directional clues, and with those clues guiding the investigations, information yielding results would surface quickly.

Despite this, Lu Chuan wasn’t idle; he departed from the Criminal Investigation Team and headed directly to Wang Dezhi’s company in the provincial capital.

Although Wang Dezhi was missing, his company remained in normal operation.

Lu Chuan came with Wang Song’s group, who primarily focused on investigating Wang Dezhi’s relationships.

Regarding the investigation methods and techniques, they were varied, with site investigation being just the most direct method.

Before arriving on-site, Wang Song had already arranged other work, starting with checking Wang Dezhi’s phone call records.

With all mobile numbers now being registered under real names, accessing call records allows for easy identification of people Wang Dezhi frequently contacted.

Though his phone currently can’t be found, the call records can be easily retrieved.

Another aspect is the investigation of Wang Dezhi’s bank transaction details.

Dezhi Logistics Company, after Wang Dezhi’s death, seemingly wasn’t severely impacted.

When Lu Chuan and Wang Song’s group arrived, many workers were still busy working.
