Chapter 279: Chapter 279: Can’t Stand to See Alaric Blackwood Happy

It was Lydia Wynn’s voice.

Alaric Blackwood stopped. After a moment’s hesitation, he asked, "Which hospital?"

Lydia Wynn was pleasantly surprised. She had thought Alaric Blackwood would ignore his own father.

She told him the hospital’s location. After hanging up, she immediately pulled a mirror and lipstick from her bag to touch up her makeup. Then she grabbed her bag, left the CEO’s office, and drove to the hospital.

She and Alaric Blackwood arrived at Quentin Blackwood’s hospital room around the same time.

By then, Quentin Blackwood’s symptoms had subsided. The doctor advised him to stay for two days of observation; if there were no further issues, he could be discharged.

His condition wasn’t serious. At least, it wasn’t life-threatening.

"Brother, you’re here."

She walked to Alaric Blackwood’s side, putting on a sweet and obedient act.

Alaric Blackwood ignored her. Looking at Quentin Blackwood on the hospital bed, he asked flatly, "How are you feeling?"

"Not dead yet."

"Then I’ll be going."

He had just turned to leave when Quentin Blackwood roared, "You can come back to the company if you want! What are you doing with Ethan Reid? Don’t you know Zane Lancaster and I have been rivals for half our lives? I hate him more than anyone!"

"I know."

’That’s precisely why I went to Zane Lancaster.’

Quentin Blackwood also had a faint feeling he was doing it on purpose. "Are you just trying to piss me off?"

"Yes."

"You brat, you succeeded. You nearly angered me to death! And your mother! The divorce was just finalized and she’s already getting so close to Zane Lancaster. What is she trying to do?"

Alaric Blackwood turned his head and saw that Quentin Blackwood’s face was ashen. He really was furious.

"If you want to know, ask her yourself. I’m not a mind reader, how would I know what she’s thinking?"

His retort made Quentin Blackwood choke, causing him to cough so violently it seemed like he was about to hack up a lung.

Seeing this, Lydia Wynn hurried forward to pat Quentin Blackwood on the back and rub his chest, helping her father calm down.

"Dad, take it easy. Don’t let your anger ruin your health. Brother has always been blunt, this isn’t the first time. Don’t take his words to heart. He’s just talking. I’m sure he cares about you deep down."

She put on the act of a devoted daughter, every word intended to coax Quentin Blackwood, all for the sake of getting his fortune.

She wanted the entire Blackwood Group and all the assets under Quentin Blackwood’s name. But she didn’t know if he had a will, and if he did, she wasn’t sure if her name would be on it.

She was just the child of his mistress. The fact that Quentin Blackwood had sent her to an orphanage back then proved he had never cared about her as a daughter.

If she hadn’t revealed her identity to Mandy Halloway, she would have been sent abroad to fend for herself long ago.

She was determined to get vicious revenge on the Blackwoods. She couldn’t stand seeing the Blackwood family doing well, nor could she stand seeing Alaric Blackwood happy.

The man she’d set her sights on had become her own brother. If she couldn’t have him, no one could.

As she was lost in these thoughts, Alaric Blackwood was observing her.

It’s said that one’s thoughts are written on their face.

Her expression and her eyes had become greedy, even sinister. None of it escaped Alaric Blackwood’s notice.

He found this woman terrifying. He felt like she was brewing up some terrible plan.

"Weren’t you leaving? Then go!"

Quentin Blackwood glared at him resentfully.

Alaric snapped back to reality and looked at Lydia Wynn. "Can you step out for a moment? I need to speak with my father."

Lydia Wynn said, "Oh," and obediently got up and left.

Alaric Blackwood made sure she had walked a fair distance and wasn’t hiding outside the door trying to eavesdrop. Only then did his gaze return to Quentin Blackwood on the bed. "I’ll give you one more chance. Send Lydia Wynn abroad and never let her come back."

Quentin Blackwood sneered. "Between you and me, who’s the father here? Since when do you get to order me around?"

"Are you saying you’d rather I take over the Blackwood Group in the future than stop protecting her?"

"Lydia is my daughter. Just like you, she shares an unbreakable blood tie with me. Whatever you have, she will have too."

Alaric Blackwood’s expression darkened. "Do you think I care about the inheritance?"

He couldn’t care less about inheriting that so-called fortune. What he cared about was Quentin Blackwood, his father, and the people around him.

"Lydia Wynn is not as simple as she seems. I suggest you send her away."

He had seen an unprecedented viciousness in that woman’s sinister gaze.

"Neither you nor your sister are on my side. Can’t you at least allow me to keep one daughter by my side?" Quentin Blackwood’s tone softened. Now that he was in the hospital, the white hair at his temples seemed especially stark.

"Didn’t you say it yourself? Blood ties are unbreakable. Do you really think we would completely abandon you and pay you no mind?"

If that were true, why would he have even bothered showing up at the hospital for Quentin Blackwood?

"Nina won’t answer my calls. She’s still angry with me."

The moment Quentin Blackwood mentioned the daughter he had doted on since she was a child, tears welled up in his eyes. "You know I doted on your sister the most. She won’t even talk to me. It’s like she’s determined to break her old father’s heart."

"If she came to see you, would you change your mind and send Lydia Wynn away?"

Quentin Blackwood fell silent.

In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He was afraid that if he sent Lydia Wynn away, he would die all alone, with no one by his side.

Seeing him remain silent for a long time, Alaric Blackwood’s heart sank.

"Dad, don’t regret your decision. Also, I will make good on my promise to take over your company within three years." Leaving him with those words, Alaric Blackwood turned and walked out.

He strode toward the elevator with a frown, a figure chasing after him.

Lydia Wynn followed close behind, squeezing into the elevator just as the doors were about to close. She pushed past the other people and deliberately stood next to him.

"Brother, leaving so soon?"

Alaric Blackwood was silent, completely ignoring her voice.

The elevator reached the ground floor, and he strode out.

Lydia Wynn chased after him, following him all the way to the parking lot.

"Stop following me."

She smiled at Alaric Blackwood. "Brother, I don’t mean any harm. I just wanted to see you off."

"I don’t need you to see me off."

Despite his harsh tone, Lydia Wynn shamelessly continued to follow him.

Alaric Blackwood stopped and turned to face her, the disgust in his eyes unconcealed. "Do you think I can’t do anything to you just because I don’t hit women?"

"Are you going to hit me?"

"I won’t. But my bodyguards will."

"But you didn’t bring any bodyguards today."

When Lydia Wynn arrived at the hospital, she had noticed Alaric Blackwood’s driver parking the car. He had no one with him today, only his driver.

The driver was still waiting in the car.

And right now, Alaric Blackwood was all alone.

"Don’t be angry, Brother. I just want to get on your good side. We’re siblings, after all."

Alaric Blackwood couldn’t be bothered with her and turned toward his car.

As he opened the rear door and bent down to get in, Lydia Wynn rushed forward, pulling a small vial from her pocket. The moment he touched the seat, before he could pull the door shut, she raised the vial in her hand and sprayed its contents right in his face.

A pungent smell filled his nostrils.

Alaric Blackwood instinctively covered his nose and mouth, but it was too late. He had already inhaled some of the knockout drug.

Seeing Lydia Wynn spray his boss with an unknown substance, the driver scrambled out of the car.

"What do you think you’re doing?"

Lydia Wynn watched the furious driver get out and charge toward her. She lifted her foot and kicked him viciously in the crotch.

The instant the driver doubled over in pain, she used the vial to spray him as well.

THUD. The driver collapsed to the ground.
