Chapter 287: Chapter 287: Having Her Eyes on Him for a Long Time

The stinging pain in his palm and the ceaseless flow of blood cleared Alaric Blackwood’s mind a little.

Gritting his teeth, he pushed through the pain and slowly sat up with Nathan Jensen’s help.

Lydia Wynn’s expression faltered when she saw Nathan Jensen.

She remembered what Alaric Blackwood had said. ’This was a trap set for her...’

’The police are actually here. I don’t know if this story will be convincing enough, but I’ve already started this act. I have no choice but to see it through.’

’Worst case scenario, I’m Quentin Blackwood’s biological daughter. Even if I’m illegitimate, his blood runs in my veins. Nathan Jensen wouldn’t dare sell me out, and Quentin Blackwood wouldn’t abandon me.’

She desperately tried to console herself. ’Stay calm. Hold it together.’

After getting dressed, she huddled by herself in a corner of the sofa.

Officer Young wrapped Alaric Blackwood in a jacket. Seeing the man’s ragged breathing, the drug clearly taking hold as he gritted his teeth so hard he nearly bit through his lip, the officer grew anxious.

"Are you holding up?"

"Ambulance... When is it getting here?"

"Should be here soon. How did you hurt your hand?"

Before Alaric Blackwood could respond, Lydia Wynn explained in a feigned panic from her corner of the sofa, "He lunged at me! I was just defending myself."

Officer Young glanced at her but paid her no mind. He gave a look to the officers under him, signaling for them to take Lydia Wynn to the station.

Two officers stepped forward, grabbed Lydia Wynn’s arms, and pulled her to her feet. A pair of cold handcuffs was clamped directly onto her wrists.

Her eyes widened. "What are you doing?"

"I already told you, Alaric Blackwood tried to rape me!"

"I only hurt him in self-defense!"

"Why are you arresting me? I’m the victim..."

she shrieked.

The shrieking gave Officer Young a headache. He frowned and glanced at his watch. Since the paramedics still hadn’t arrived, he decided to take matters into his own hands and, with Nathan Jensen’s help, lifted Alaric Blackwood from the floor.

"Mr. Blackwood, my apologies."

He supported the barely conscious Alaric Blackwood and waved over a few of his men. "Quickly, give me a hand."

Alaric Blackwood didn’t have the strength to protest.

"Move out!"

At the command, several officers clumsily lifted Alaric Blackwood and scrambled after Officer Young out of the suite.

Nathan Jensen hurried after them, followed by Lydia Wynn, who was being dragged by two officers, screaming the whole way.

The group waited several minutes for the elevator. By the time they reached the ground floor, the ambulance had finally, belatedly, arrived.

"What took you so long!"

Officer Young demanded.

"There was a serious traffic jam up ahead. It took a while for cars to clear a path for us."

After explaining, the paramedics quickly prepared a stretcher.

The officers lifted Alaric Blackwood onto the stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance, while Lydia Wynn was shoved directly into a police car.

"Is the road ahead still blocked?"

"Still is."

Officer Young gestured to a police car. "Alex, get up front and clear a path for the ambulance."

"Got it, Captain Young."

The police car led the way, and the ambulance, siren wailing, followed close behind.

Three minutes later, they screeched to a halt at the nearest hospital.

By this point, Alaric Blackwood was barely conscious, aware only of an unbearable heat consuming his body. Several staff members had to hold him down just to successfully insert an IV.

Officer Young called Sophie Shaw. By the time she arrived, Alaric Blackwood’s symptoms had eased, the wound on his hand had been treated and bandaged, and he had been moved to a private room.

Seeing Alaric Blackwood on the bed—cheeks flushed, forehead beaded with sweat, brows tightly knit—Sophie Shaw rushed to his side and placed a hand on his forehead.

"He’s burning up!"

Officer Young explained, "Mr. Blackwood was drugged, but we got him to the hospital in time, so he should be fine. We’ve already apprehended the person responsible."

Sophie Shaw froze for a second before it clicked. "The person responsible? You mean Lydia Wynn?"

"That’s right."

"What exactly happened?"

Officer Young needed to get back to the station to interrogate Lydia Wynn, so he gestured with his chin toward Alaric Blackwood on the bed. "Let Mr. Blackwood tell you himself when he wakes up. I have to get going."

Sophie Shaw nodded, watching as Officer Young left the hospital room.

Just as he walked out, another man walked in.

It was Nathan Jensen.

Sophie Shaw didn’t recognize him. "And you are?"

"I’m the director of the finance department at Blackwood Group..."

Nathan Jensen explained the events of the evening, and only then did Sophie Shaw realize that Alaric Blackwood had used himself as bait to lure Lydia Wynn into a trap.

"Now that you’re up to speed, I’ll have to trouble you to look after him."

After laying out the whole story, Nathan Jensen didn’t linger. He glanced at Alaric Blackwood on the bed, then turned and left.

The door clicked softly shut, leaving the room in silence.

Sophie Shaw stayed by the bed, watching the unconscious Alaric Blackwood. She took a pack of tissues from her bag and gently wiped the sweat from his forehead and neck.

「At the police station.」

Lydia Wynn refused to confess, still maintaining that she was the victim.

When Officer Young walked into the interrogation room, her eyes were brimming with tears, as if she had suffered some terrible injustice.

He pulled out a chair, sat down, and lit a cigarette. Watching Lydia Wynn’s fake tears, he let out a soft chuckle. "Miss Wynn, you can drop the act. Nathan Jensen has told us everything. You had him lure Mr. Blackwood to the hotel, and then you drugged him."

As he spoke, he pulled out a phone and slapped it down on the table.

This was the phone Alaric Blackwood had motioned for him to take from his pocket back in the hotel room, right when he was draping the jacket over him.

The moment Alaric Blackwood had stepped into that suite, he had started a recording on his phone.

His entire conversation with Lydia Wynn in the room had been recorded, not a single word missed.

Officer Young played the entire recording right there in front of Lydia Wynn.

"Mr. Blackwood mentioned you’ve had your eye on him for quite some time. He felt he had to be careful around you."

The corner of Lydia Wynn’s mouth twitched. "No, it’s not like that! They plotted against me! They’re intentionally framing me for this!"

"Mr. Blackwood has requested we proceed according to the law. If you wish to contact a lawyer, you are free to do so."

With that, Officer Young picked up the phone from the table and walked out.

He had a copy of the recording made for evidence and then sent someone to return Alaric Blackwood’s phone to the hospital.

It was already very late when Sophie Shaw got the phone.

She rested her head on the edge of the bed, holding Alaric Blackwood’s hand. She wasn’t the least bit sleepy, and every few moments, she’d wipe the sweat from his brow.

He was sweating profusely, a sign that the drug was finally leaving his system. His clothes were completely soaked.

While Alaric Blackwood was still unconscious, she got up and left the room. She went to a nearby convenience store to buy some toiletries and also sent a message to Preston Chase, asking him to bring a fresh change of clothes over in the morning.

Back in the hospital room, she filled a basin with warm water and used a towel to gently wipe Alaric Blackwood down.

The man slept fitfully through the night, only regaining consciousness early the next morning.

Opening his eyes, he found Sophie Shaw slumped over the side of the bed, asleep. He raised a hand to stroke her hair. He’d sweated all night and had almost no strength left, so the gesture was faint, but it was enough to wake her.

Seeing he was conscious, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Feeling any better?"

"When did you get here?"

"Last night."

"You stayed with me all night?"

"Mhm."

"About that photo from last night..."

"I know everything. You don’t have to explain."
