Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 123: The Territory of Ash
The elderly survivor’s cryptic words lingered long after the expedition departed the underground shelter.
"I remember you from before you were born," he had murmured, his faint voice echoing through the cavern.
Raviah had pressed him for answers, but his memories were too shattered by decades of crystalline exposure to yield more. Before they left, he handed her hand-drawn maps pointing toward regions with stable underground energy, including a broad expanse west of the dead city’s ruins.
Evening settled over the wasteland as Raviah stood near an armored transport, overlooking a landscape that felt almost unreal in this transformed world. Ash-colored dust blanketed the surrounding highways, and the hollow skeletons of abandoned factories lined the distant horizon.
Yet beyond that desolate industrial graveyard, a pristine valley unfolded beneath a pale golden sky. Soft green grass covered the rolling slopes, clear streams wound past groves of resilient trees, and rich soil stretched across the basin.
Crouching near the roadside, Raviah pressed her gloved hand against the dark earth, feeling its cool moisture seep through the fabric. With a thought, she accessed her spatial dimension, pulling a portable analyzer from her hidden storage and collecting a small sample.
The device buzzed softly, its small screen rapidly filling with detailed chemical readouts. Her eyebrows lifted in surprise at the numbers scrolling past.
"Rhyder, take a look at these readings," Raviah called out, her voice breaking the expanse.
Rhyder stepped up beside her, his keen gaze shifting from the surrounding hills down to the illuminated display.
"What did you find?" he asked, adjusting his sidearm.
"The soil contains incredible nutrient levels, perfectly suited for large-scale crops," she replied, pointing to the diagnostic indicators. "Heavy metal contamination is virtually nonexistent, and the stream water shows no signs of biological corruption."
"Can it support a permanent settlement?" Rhyder inquired, scanning the valley’s natural perimeter.
Raviah scooped another soil sample into a clean vial, carefully sealing it. "If these readings hold across the entire basin, absolutely. The microbial activity here is healthy, almost as if the soil resisted the destructive transformations we’ve seen everywhere else."
"How far does the cultivable ground extend?" Rhyder asked, turning toward the gathering group of officers.
"Several hundred hectares at least," she estimated, wiping a trace of mud from her diagnostic kit. "We’ll need aerial surveys and deeper core samples before we can determine the usable acreage."
Rhyder faced his waiting officers and issued quick, decisive instructions. "Deploy the survey drones immediately to map the valley’s perimeter, water routes, and defensive points. I want thorough soil profiles from every quadrant before night falls."
The command echoed down the line, prompting immediate movement among the troops. Drones launched into the air with low buzzes, scanning the landscape, while engineers set up a mobile field hub near the main road.
Elemental scouts dispersed across the perimeter, sweeping the nearby woods for hidden threats. Raviah moved between test sites, conducting deeper scans with her diagnostic kit.
The further she inspected the valley, the more remarkable its ecology proved to be. The vegetation exhibited slight elemental adaptation, yet the growth remained stable rather than violently mutated.
Translucent veins ran beneath the bark of tall trees, and gentle gusts of wind caused the blades of grass to pulse with faint energy. The plants still drew genuine nutrients from the earth, refusing to rely entirely on raw, concentrated elemental power.
"This land hasn’t escaped the apocalypse," Raviah remarked as Rhyder joined her along the riverbank. "It’s learning to adapt without destroying its fundamental ecological structure."
"Does that mean we can successfully grow crops here?" he asked, watching the clear water ripple over smooth pebbles.
"I believe so," Raviah said, glancing up at him. "We can start with controlled test plots and monitor every growth phase closely. If the earth remains stable, this single valley could feed thousands of survivors."
Rhyder gazed across the open plains, considering the situation. Sol Haven had been built to endure the initial end of civilization, relying on fortified walls, reserves, and medical facilities.
Yet a single fortress could never safeguard all of humanity, and relying entirely on one location left them vulnerable to a single catastrophic siege.
"We will establish our second settlement right here," Rhyder announced calmly.
Raviah looked up at him in surprise. "Already?" she questioned, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face.
"We have a strong western ridge for defense, fresh water, and rich soil," Rhyder reasoned, gesturing toward the surrounding terrain. "It sits far enough from the ruined industrial zone to avoid immediate hazards, but close enough to maintain a steady trade route."
"We still have to verify that these stable energy signatures won’t shift unexpectedly," she countered, tucking her diagnostic tools away.
"Then we will build in measured phases," Rhyder replied smoothly. "We start with a fortified forward post, then advance to reinforced living quarters, medical units, secure storage, and agricultural fields. We won’t lay permanent foundations until your team gives the final approval."
Raviah studied his firm expression for a brief moment before offering a small nod. "That sounds fair," she conceded.
"I will count that as your official blessing," he said, the corner of his lip twitching upward.
"Don’t make a habit of expecting it," she replied dryly, a faint smile softening her expression.
Rhyder turned back toward his officers to finalize the initial outpost positions. Engineers immediately began driving glowing survey stakes into the soil, while logistics crews calculated transport requirements for heavy equipment.
For the first time since venturing into the dead city, the expedition had uncovered genuine hope, a place where humanity could rebuild.
Raviah watched the bright survey markers light up the valley, imagining future greenhouses, medical centers, clean irrigation canals, and rows of crops beneath the clear sky.
Suddenly, her root stirred sharply deep within her chest.
She froze in place, her breath catching. A pulse reverberated through the earth beneath her combat boots, so low it felt like a subterranean heartbeat. It seemed faint initially, but a tremor struck with far greater force, causing the stream to slosh wildly over its banks.
Raviah immediately extended her sensory perception down into the bedrock. Beneath the fertile soil, an immense form was surging upward. Its energy profile was jagged, aggressive, and dangerously dense, a violent contrast to the valley.
Her core tightened painfully in warning. "Rhyder!" she called out sharply.
He spun around instantly at the panic in her tone.
"What’s wrong?" he demanded.
"Order everyone away from the lower valley right now!" she urged, her eyes fixed on the vibrating ground.
Rhyder didn’t hesitate for a single second.
"All units, fall back to defensive perimeters!" he shouted into his comms, his voice echoing across the field. "Survey teams, abandon non-essential gear and pull back immediately!"
The officers scrambled to execute the retreat, shouting orders to their squads.
Across the open plain, the ground gave way with a deafening crack. A dark fissure snapped open between two survey markers, spewing clouds of ash-colored dust into the sky. The lush green grass nearby withered instantly in an expanding circle as corrupted energy burst through the soil.
Raviah glanced down at her handheld analyzer, watching the readings spike past critical safety thresholds. Moments later, the screen flickered and went entirely black.
A crimson warning flashed across the transport’s primary central monitor:
[HOSTILE ENERGY SIGNATURE DETECTED.]
[UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT: APPROACHING.]
The earth lurched violently beneath them once more, throwing several retreating soldiers off their feet. Rhyder stepped directly in front of Raviah, drawing his sidearm as his Elemental escorts surged forward to form an impenetrable barrier.
From deep within the dark earth came a horrific grinding noise, like a massive creature dragging its armored shell through solid stone.
Raviah’s root recoiled instinctively from the sheer malice below. Whatever was awakening had lain hidden beneath the valley long before their arrival, and now it was rising directly toward them.
