Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 60: The Dead Rise
The reanimated corpse slammed its palms violently against the stainless steel examination table once more, rattling the thick metal frame. The heavy leather restraints groaned under the sudden, unnatural strain.
Raviah Solomon remained completely motionless behind the reinforced glass observation barrier, her pneumatic launcher held steady in her hand with an energy suppression syringe ready in the chamber.
"Maintain containment protocols," she ordered, her voice echoing calmly over the internal intercom.
The lab technician nodded frantically, his hands trembling violently over the main control console.
"Yes, Doctor!"
Inside the isolation bay, the zombie suddenly stopped thrashing. Its clouded, milky-gray eyes shifted slowly, locking directly onto the trembling technician standing near the glass.
Raviah’s sharp eyes narrowed as she caught the subtle movement.
"Don’t move," she warned softly.
The technician froze in place, his breath catching in his throat. The corpse’s head tilted at an unnatural, sickening angle, its neck joints cracking loudly in the silent room. Then, without warning, it moved. The thick leather straps securing its wrists snapped apart like brittle string.
"Doctor!" the technician shrieked, stumbling backward in sheer terror.
The zombie launched itself off the examination table, its heavy boots hitting the floor with a dull thud. It crashed straight through the inner glass barrier before the heavy, automatic security door could slide fully shut.
The technician screamed as he was knocked off his feet, tumbling onto the hard concrete floor. The creature caught him pinned by the left shoulder, its blackened fingernails tearing effortlessly through the reinforced fabric of his hazmat suit.
"Get it off me!" he shrieked, thrashing desperately beneath the corpse’s unnatural weight.
Raviah did not hesitate for a single second, slamming her open palm against the primary emergency control panel beside her.
"Seal Laboratory Seven!" she commanded loudly.
[BIOLOGICAL CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL ACTIVATED]
Massive, reinforced steel blast doors dropped from the ceiling with deafening clangs, instantly dividing the sprawling research facility into isolated sectors. The zombie pinned the screaming technician against the floor, its jaw snapping frantically at his exposed neck.
Raviah raised her pneumatic launcher, took aim, and squeezed the trigger. The suppression syringe flew through the air, embedding itself deeply into the creature’s right shoulder blade. A concentrated burst of pale, translucent energy rapidly expanded through the zombie’s dark veins.
The creature violently convulsed, its jaw locking as a high-pitched hiss tore from its throat. Its suffocating grip loosened, allowing the terrified technician to kick himself free and scramble frantically across the floor.
"Run to the secondary isolation chamber now!" Raviah ordered, stepping into the creature’s line of sight.
The technician scrambled through the narrow emergency access door, which sealed shut behind him with a heavy hydraulic thud. Left alone in the primary bay, the zombie slowly turned its clouded, milky eyes toward Raviah.
She drew her energy blade from her tactical belt, the pale edge humming softly as her newly awakened Root resonated through the hilt.
"Come on," she murmured, holding the weapon in a low, professional guard.
The creature charged forward, its clawed hands reaching for her throat.
Raviah sidestepped fluidly at the very last second, letting the zombie’s momentum carry it forward to crash heavily against the reinforced concrete wall. She pivoted gracefully, driving the glowing edge of her energy blade clean through the creature’s thick thigh muscle.
The zombie collapsed onto the cold floor with a dull thud, its leg completely useless. Yet, it did not remain down or show any signs of physical agony. It slowly, relentlessly dragged its upper body forward using its clawed fingers, its dead eyes remaining fixed on her boots.
Raviah’s dark eyes narrowed as she watched the creature’s movements.
"Interesting," she murmured softly under her breath.
She was not frightened in the slightest. Her medical mind was actively analyzing every detail of the phenomenon. She observed that its muscle tissues were already reacting to the injected energy suppression compound.
However, the compound’s effect was not uniform throughout the host’s body. Some infected cellular clusters were rapidly collapsing and dying off, while other surrounding cells appeared to actively adapt to the energy.
Using a long, sterile collection probe, she swiftly extracted fresh blood, tissue, and neural samples from the writhing corpse, sealing them into separate diagnostic chambers on her portable analyzer.
She stepped over to the main holographic screen, running an instant microscopic breakdown on the four distinct tissue samples. As the diagnostic data rendered across the glass, her calm expression gradually shifted into grave concern.
The alien pathogen was not behaving identically across every biological host. The four tested samples displayed completely different cellular reactions. One tissue sample showed absolute cellular collapse and total necrosis.
A second sample displayed rapid, uncontrolled cellular regeneration and muscular swelling. A third sample contained an intense, highly unstable accumulation of dark energy. A fourth sample showed something even stranger and far more profound.
The dead neural cells were actively beginning to resonate in harmony with ambient elemental energy. Raviah stared at the pulsing diagnostic lines, her breath catching softly in her throat.
"Four distinct biological outcomes," she whispered, tracing the holographic data points with her finger.
She enlarged the detailed cellular scans on the primary display.
"Complete cellular death," she noted, tapping the first sample.
"Reanimation into a zombie," she continued, examining the second.
"Abnormal biological mutation," she stated, looking at the third.
Then, she focused entirely on the fourth, vibrating sample. Her breathing slowed as the full reality of her medical discovery settled in.
"Elemental awakening," she whispered into the quiet room.
The technician, watching safely from behind the secondary glass window, stared at the wall screen in disbelief.
"Doctor... are you saying infected humans can experience entirely different evolutionary paths?"
"Yes," Raviah replied, her fingers moving rapidly across the glass console to cross-reference her findings. "The pathogen is not merely a fatal disease. It actively interacts with the pre-existing biological condition and genetic compatibility of the host."
A healthy, physically fit body with compatible traits might absorb the ambient atmospheric energy, unlocking an Elemental Root. A severely injured or dying person might suffer total neurological destruction, reanimating into a mindless monster.
Another host might experience horrific physical mutations, transforming into a rabid beast. And another might simply suffer complete organic failure and die on the spot.
Raviah examined the data with a deep, unsettling sense of unease.
"The apocalypse is not forcing humanity down a single evolutionary path," she murmured softly.
She turned her head, looking through the glass at the legless zombie still dragging itself across the floor.
"It is splintering us into entirely different species."
Some humans would die out quickly, while others would turn into mindless, flesh-craving monsters. Some would mutate into grotesque beasts, while a select few would awaken powerful Elemental Roots. Humanity itself was permanently diverging at the cellular level.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic impact echoed ominously down the outer corridor.
Raviah’s head snapped toward the heavy laboratory entrance.
A second, more violent impact rattled the reinforced steel frame.
Then came a third thunderous strike.
Her dark eyes narrowed as she turned to the technician. "How many infected casualties were brought into this research sector tonight?"
The technician hesitated, checking his digital log with trembling hands. "Three... three bodies were delivered from the southern checkpoint, Doctor."
Raviah’s expression turned ice-cold. "Three?"
"Yes," the technician stammered, looking up in panic. "The other two were declared dead on arrival during transport!"
She turned immediately toward the secondary containment corridor controls. "Show me their isolation status right now."
Before the technician could touch the console, the heavy, reinforced blast door slid open with a sharp hydraulic hiss.
General Rhyder Drakeheir stepped inside the room, his tall, broad-shouldered frame blocking the corridor light behind him. His dark combat uniform was coated in thick dust, dried mud, and dark blood.
"Rhyder?" Raviah called out, her posture easing slightly.
He unclipped his heavy tactical helmet, setting it onto the counter as his dark eyes swept the room. "I heard the level-four containment alarm blaring through the lower bunker."
"You shouldn’t be down here," she said firmly, her doctor’s instincts flaring up.
"I know," he replied simply, his voice low and steady.
"You need to return to the command deck and oversee the Veyron evacuation corridor," she urged, stepping toward him.
"I have already done everything possible to secure those roads for the regiments," Rhyder answered, refusing to move.
"You should be resting in the medical quarters."
His dark eyes drifted toward the glass chamber, where the legless zombie was still scratching at the floor. "I will rest when I know you are safe."
Raviah frowned slightly, her tone tightening. "This is a active level-four biological hazard zone, General."
"I know."
"You could easily be exposed or infected."
"I know."
"Then leave the laboratory immediately."
Rhyder took a slow, deliberate step closer to her, closing the distance between them. "No."
Her sharp expression tightened further. "Rhyder, don’t be unreasonable."
His guarded, intense gaze softened just enough for her to see the raw emotion beneath it. "I already died once trying to protect you in a world that fell apart."
Raviah froze in her tracks, the words hanging heavy in the cool air between them.
Rhyder continued softly, his dark eyes locked onto hers without wavering. "I am not making the same mistake by leaving your side now."
Her gloved fingers tightened around the hilt of her energy blade, her pulse quickening. "You don’t know what kind of nightmare we are walking into down here."
"Neither do you," he countered quietly.
"Which is precisely why you should go back upstairs where it’s safe!"
"And that is precisely why I am staying right here beside you."
For several long, heavy seconds, neither of them said a word, the unspoken weight of their past and present hanging between them. Suddenly, another violent, deafening impact shook the outer corridor walls, shattering the quiet moment.
Rhyder reacted instantly, drawing his heavy sidearm and stepping firmly in front of Raviah to shield her body. Raviah turned her head toward the reinforced secondary doorway as a bright crimson warning light flashed across the wall console.
[UNAUTHORIZED ENERGY SURGE DETECTED]
Her dark eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she read the spatial energy metrics. "That shouldn’t be biologically possible..."
The overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently before dying completely, plunging the lab into dark red emergency lighting.
Then, a sudden, blinding blast of crimson elemental fire erupted from the secondary containment room, blowing the heavy steel door outward off its hinges.
Rhyder held his ground firmly in front of Raviah, raising his weapon as smoke poured into the hall. The warped metal door hit the deck with a heavy metallic crash.
Through the rising smoke and burning debris, a dark shadow slowly emerged from the secondary holding bay. It was another reanimated civilian corpse, its clothing scorched and torn.
Its clouded, milky eyes glowed with a faint, unnatural crimson light from within their sockets. And around its trembling right hand, crackling, violent sparks of raw elemental fire began to gather.
