The engines outside Sol Haven grew louder, sending a rhythmic vibration through the concrete floors. Through the reinforced observation windows, Raviah watched armored military vehicles spread across the mist-shrouded mountain ridges.

Artillery batteries were already being locked into position, their long barrels trained directly on the valley below. Transport carriers opened their hydraulic hatches, unloading rows of heavily armed infantry into the cold mountain air.

The government had not come to negotiate or seek a peaceful solution. They had come prepared to wage an all-out war.

Rhyder stood tall beside the tactical command table, his dark eyes calmly scanning the glowing holographic display.

"Open a high-priority channel to every military unit under my command," he ordered.

The communications officer immediately obeyed, his hands flying across the glowing console. Within seconds, a broad, unrestricted military frequency hummed to life across the entire region.

Rhyder lifted his communicator, his resonant voice carrying clearly across the quieted battlefield. "This is General Rhyder Drakeheir."

Outside the fortress walls, thousands of soldiers held their breath as the static cleared.

"I have received the government’s official order authorizing direct military intervention against Sol Haven." He paused for a second, letting the weight of his next words hang in the freezing air. "I will not order my soldiers to fire on innocent civilians."

A dead silence fell over the bustling command center as officers froze at their stations.

Rhyder continued, his tone remaining absolute and unshakable.

"Any soldier who refuses to participate in an offensive assault against helpless civilians will face no punishment from me."

His message echoed over thousands of military headsets and vehicular radios across the ridge lines.

"Stand down right now if you believe this operation violates your solemn oath to protect the people."

For several agonizing seconds, nothing returned over the channel except the hiss of radio static.

Then, a clear voice broke through the silence.

"Third Armored Battalion. We stand with General Drakeheir."

A second transmission cut in before the first even faded out.

"Fifth Mobile Regiment. Standing by for your orders, sir."

Another signal flickered across the screen, sharp and immediate.

"Eastern Medical Defense Corps refuses any offensive deployment against this facility."

More encrypted signals began flooding the tactical map, lighting up the holotable in rapid succession. One after another, dozens of military markers shifted from white to vibrant green around Sol Haven.

Raviah stepped closer to the table, her dark eyes reflecting the sudden glow of the display.

His soldiers were actively making their choice in real time. They were not doing it because Rhyder had forced them under threat of court-martial. They were standing beside him because they trusted his honor implicitly.

Suddenly, the tactical map flickered violently as the balance shifted again.

Several prominent green markers flashed once before turning a stark, warning yellow.

The communications officer tightened his grip on his headset, his face turning pale.

"General..."

Rhyder did not flinch, keeping his gaze fixed on the screen.

"What is it?"

"Some of the incoming units are continuing their advance toward the outer gates."

Rhyder’s expression hardened into ice.

"Which ones?"

"The Second Armored Division, Seventh Infantry Brigade, and two artillery groups." The officer swallowed nervously before adding the final detail. "They are maintaining strict government authorization and preparing to open fire."

The military force surrounding the valley was actively splitting in two. One half remained fiercely loyal to Rhyder, while the other chose to follow the government’s authority.

Raviah stared at the shifting holographic map, feeling a chill run down her spine.

The dividing lines cutting through the post-apocalyptic world were no longer simple. They were no longer drawn between opposing nations or even between military forces and civilian survivors.

Instead, deep fractures were appearing inside the very same units. The divide was cutting directly through battalions and tearing apart the command structure from within.

"Rhyder," Raviah spoke quietly, stepping right to his side.

He shifted his head slightly to look down at her.

"This isn’t just a dispute about who controls Sol Haven anymore."

"I know," he replied softly.

"They are going to turn their weapons on each other."

His dark eyes drifted back toward the approaching armored lines.

"If neither side chooses to step down, yes."

Outside the fortress walls, the massive external loudspeakers suddenly burst to life with high-decibel static. An official government commander began broadcasting a harsh, mechanical announcement over the valley.

"All Sol Haven personnel are ordered to surrender all weapons and military assets immediately."

No answer was returned from the fortress gates or the defecting units. The automated announcement repeated itself, echoing off the stone cliff faces.

Then it blared a third time, cold and demanding.

Rhyder finally picked up his communicator, setting the channel to the lead battalion’s direct frequency.

"Eastern Defense forces approaching Sol Haven, this is General Drakeheir."

Across the ridges, hundreds of soldiers paused, listening intently through their headsets.

"Do not advance your vehicles beyond the outer mountain ridge."

Heavy static hissed over the line before a stern, unfamiliar voice answered.

"General, we are operating under direct, high-level orders from Central Command."

"So am I."

"Your command authority has been officially revoked by executive decree."

Rhyder’s cold expression did not show a single hint of fear or doubt.

"My soldiers have already made their decision."

The opposing commander fell silent for a few long seconds, likely surveying the defecting units on his own radar.

"We will proceed with the tactical objective," the commander finally stated.

Rhyder slowly lowered the communicator, letting it rest against the edge of the metal table.

Raviah watched his rigid posture, her voice laced with quiet urgency. "What happens now?"

He turned his head to look out the reinforced window toward the massive iron gates. "We prepare."

Instantly, disciplined soldiers began moving efficiently throughout the entire fortress complex. Heavy defensive emplacements were powered up, and reinforced barriers were locked firmly into place.

Crates of high-grade ammunition were distributed rapidly to defensive squads along the high walls. Medical teams rushed through the lower corridors, establishing emergency triage stations to handle potential casualties.

Yet, despite the overwhelming tension, not a single person pressed a trigger. No one opened fire.

Not yet.

Raviah walked down the long command corridor, her eyes drifting toward the thick glass observation panels.

Inside the lower residential halls, hundreds of civilian refugees were watching the military preparations in complete silence. Small children clutched their parents’ hands tightly, their eyes wide with fear.

Agricultural workers stood shoulder to shoulder with military medical personnel, all gazing out at the same ridge. Everyone inside the walls understood the tragic reality unfolding right before their eyes.

The world they once knew had already shattered during the initial collapse. Humanity had once stood together, fighting desperately to survive against mutated beasts and ruthless environments.

Now, starving and desperate, humans were turning their deadliest weapons against their own kind.

Raviah paused near the end of the glass corridor as Rhyder walked up to stand beside her.

"I used to think survival simply meant defeating the monsters that emerged during the apocalypse," she murmured.

Rhyder turned his gaze toward her, listening attentively.

She stared out at the dark line of approaching tanks on the horizon.

"But the monsters aren’t the only threat we have to worry about anymore."

"No," he agreed.

"People are dividing themselves," she continued, her fingers tightening slightly against her tunic.

"It is not a simple conflict between civilians and the military."

Raviah turned her head, meeting his intense, focused eyes.

"It is a war between those who want humanity to actually survive..." Her voice dropped to a barely audible whisper. "...and those who merely want to control whatever fragments are left of it."

Rhyder did not offer a spoken answer.

Instead, the command console behind them suddenly burst into a flurry of loud, erratic warning tones. A brand-new armored convoy was rapidly approaching along the narrow western access road.

The communications officer leaned over his monitor, his eyes widening in shock as he read the incoming identification signal.

"General..."

Rhyder turned around instantly, his boots clicking heavily on the metallic floor.

"Who is approaching?"

The officer swallowed hard, his hands visibly shaking over the console keys.

"Command vehicle designation is officially confirmed, sir."

The broad holographic map enlarged automatically, displaying a prominent, high-ranking military seal. Immediately below the crest, a specific commander’s personal identification code flashed in bold text.

Raviah looked back at Rhyder, watching his face closely.

For the very first time since the crisis began, his guarded, emotionless expression shattered. It was not a look of sudden fear, nor was it the flare of battlefield anger.

It was the heavy, painful shock of immediate recognition.

The lead vehicle of the opposing convoy crossed over the crest of the western ridge, its armored hull coming to a stop. Stepping out into the harsh wind was a senior military commander dressed in full, decorated combat armor.

The communications officer lowered his head, whispering the name in utter disbelief.

"It’s General..."

Rhyder stared at the main viewscreen, his chest rising and falling in breaths. His own biological brother was standing directly among the military forces preparing to tear Sol Haven apart.

On the ridge, the senior officer lifted his personal military communicator, bypassing standard security to open a direct, encrypted channel.

The sharp chime echoed through the quiet command center before a deep, familiar voice filled the room.

"Rhyder."

Rhyder’s dark eyes narrowed into steel as he gripped the edge of the console.

"Brother."
