Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 85: The Kiss
"Then don’t waste any more time."
Raviah’s breath caught sharply in her chest.
For several agonizing heartbeats, neither of them moved.
The greenhouse remained wrapped in a warm golden light. Overhead circulation vents hummed softly, blowing a gentle breeze over rows of young, vibrant crops.
Outside the thick reinforced glass, the fortress of Sol Haven continued its endless, restless rhythm of roaring generators and distant patrol boots. Yet inside this tiny, enclosed sanctuary, the chaotic world beyond seemed to melt away.
Rhyder’s intense, dark eyes searched hers, unblinking. He did not rush to touch her or force the moment forward. He simply stood firmly in place, giving her every opportunity to pull back or step away.
Raviah did not move an inch. Instead, she slowly lifted her chin, her gaze locking onto his. It was the subtle invitation he needed.
Rhyder’s right hand rose slowly into the warm air. His broad fingers hovered for a fraction of a second before gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her temple. His touch was impossibly soft, a contrast to his calloused, battle-worn skin.
Raviah’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. It was not the cold terror of an impending battle. Nor was it the phantom pain of memory, of watching a brave soldier fall in a past life. This feeling was alive, terrifying, and breathtakingly real.
Rhyder leaned in close, his movements slow and deliberate. Their foreheads nearly touched, the heat radiating off him filling her senses.
"Are you sure?" He whispered, his deep voice carrying a rare, raw vulnerability.
Raviah stared straight into the dark depth of his eyes.
"Yes," she replied, her voice firm and without a single thread of doubt.
That single word shattered whatever restraint remained between them.
Rhyder closed the lingering space separating their lips. His mouth met hers gently, pressing with a tender, unhurried warmth. There was no desperate urgency or wild madness driving them.
It was a profound kiss, born not from battlefield adrenaline, but from an undeniable truth they had carried through endless darkness. As though both of them instinctively understood that this tender moment had been patiently waiting beneath every scar they bore.
Raviah slowly closed her eyes, letting the sensation wash over her. For a brief, flickering instant, a ghost of a past life flashed behind her eyelids. She remembered a dying city choked with black smoke and crimson blood.
She remembered Rhyder standing alone against a swarm of horrific creatures, blocking the path with his body. She remembered his final, bloody command ringing in her ears before darkness took everything.
"Live."
For so long, she had carried the crushing burden of his tragic death, treating that painful sacrifice as the absolute truth of who he was. The selfless stranger who gave his life for hers. The tragic soul she had desperately searched for across time and space after returning to the past.
Now, with his warm hand resting tenderly against her flushed cheek, the shadow on her heart dissolved completely. She was no longer in love with a ghost or a distant memory.
The man holding her right now was real, solid, and pulsing with warmth. He was stubborn, often frustrating, and impossibly protective of those around him. He challenged her endlessly, trusted her implicitly, and had willingly abandoned his highest military authority to shield her fortress.
When the world crumbled into chaos around them, he had stayed right beside her. He chose her, time and time again. Raviah’s fingers slowly reached up, wrapping tightly around the rugged material of his dark military uniform.
When their lips finally parted, neither of them pulled far away. Their foreheads remained rested together, their breaths mingling in the quiet air.
Rhyder’s chest rose and fell in slightly uneven rhythms.
Raviah felt a deep heat rising to her cheeks, her face burning brightly.
She lowered her eyes, suddenly losing the fierce, unshakeable confidence she had held just moments before.
A low, quiet chuckle rumbled deep inside Rhyder’s chest.
"What are you thinking?" He asked softly.
Raviah swallowed past the tightness in her throat.
"That I should have realized it much sooner," she murmured.
Rhyder tilted his head slightly. "Realized what?"
She raised her eyes, meeting his gaze with absolute clarity.
"That I don’t love you because you once died for me," she whispered softly.
Rhyder’s expression softened, his dark eyes shimmering with unspoken emotion.
"I love you because you stayed," she continued, the truth spilling freely from her heart.
Rhyder went completely still, his entire body freezing in place.
The words lingered softly between them, vibrating in the fragrant air of the greenhouse.
Raviah’s heart beat wildly against her ribs, loud and frantic.
She had never pictured herself confessing this, not in her miserable previous life, nor during the months of endless preparation before doomsday. Yet now, the truth was as clear as the light around them.
She loved this man completely. Not out of guilt, nor out of a deep debt for her life. She loved the living, breathing man who chose to stand beside her in the ruins of the world.
Rhyder’s thumb moved gently, brushing across the soft skin of her cheekbone.
"Then I’m staying," he declared quietly, his tone absolute.
A tiny, breathless smile broke across Raviah’s lips.
"You had better," she teased softly.
The corner of his mouth curved upward into a genuine smile.
"I intend to."
BOOM!
A violent, bone-rattling shockwave suddenly ripped through the air, shaking the entire greenhouse foundation.
Raviah’s eyes snapped wide open as the glass structure groaned under immense pressure.
A deafening explosion thundered beyond the high walls of Sol Haven.
Reinforced glass panels rattled furiously in their frames, and several golden light fixtures overhead flickered rapidly before turning blood-red.
Before the debris even hit the ground, Rhyder shifted his weight, instantly stepping in front of Raviah to shield her body with his own.
"Stay behind me!" He commanded, his gentle tone instantly vanishing into precision.
Another massive explosion thundered through the night, making the concrete ground shudder beneath their boots. High-pitched emergency sirens blared across the complex, echoing harshly through the agricultural sector.
Red emergency lights flashed rhythmically, painting the lush green crops in eerie, crimson shadows. The warmth in Raviah’s eyes instantly vanished, replaced by an ice-cold focus.
The tender woman vanished, replaced by the elite doctor, the hardened survivor, and the mastermind who had built this fortress.
Synthetic automated voices screamed through the fortress security speakers.
[MAJOR EXPLOSION DETECTED]
[WESTERN PERIMETER BREACH ALERT]
Rhyder’s hand moved with practiced speed, unholstering his weapon with a sharp click.
Raviah reached subtly into her spatial dimension, summoning a pair of medical gloves into her grip as she stared through the glass walls.
Far off in the distance, past the western defense walls, a colossal pillar of fire and dark smoke churned into the night sky.
Beneath the deafening roar of burning steel and crumbling concrete, a dark sound reverberated across the earth. A guttural, unnatural roar echoed from the deep shadows beyond the flames.
Rhyder’s gaze hardened into lethal killer intent as he gripped his sidearm tightly.
"The attack has begun."
