Chapter 375: Chapter 375
It was Mark who spoke up; he had recognized what lay ahead even before Suzy did.
"How is a dark curtain appearing here too..."
Up ahead, the dark curtain was still continuing to expand. A chill crept right up Suzy’s spine.
Things were taking a turn for the worse—these dark curtains weren’t just isolated to a single region.
The nearby soldier overheard Suzy’s muttering and looked over in her direction.
"You two have seen this thing before?" the soldier asked.
Suzy and Mark looked over at the same time and nodded.
"Where did you see it?" The cold expression on the soldier’s face flickered slightly as he took a step toward them.
Mark shielded Suzy behind him and explained to the soldier, "We saw one on the road last night. We were held up for quite a while too."
The soldier turned his head toward the continuously expanding dark barrier and inquired, "How much do you know about this thing?"
"Not much. Last night was our first time seeing it too," Mark said.
From behind him, Suzy thought of something and said softly, "There are monsters inside the dark curtain."
The soldier’s face changed sharply, his voice rising a notch. "Monsters? What kind of monsters?"
Mark and Suzy exchanged a glance.
Mark looked at the soldier and explained, "Back then, someone went into the dark curtain to check out the situation. Just as he was about to come out... a hand pulled him back in."
He stopped there. What happened after that didn’t need to be stated explicitly—the soldier understood all too well.
"There are monsters inside, are you sure?" With a grim expression, the soldier reached for the walkie-talkie at his waist.
"We have no reason to lie to you," Suzy said.
They had seen that reaching hand with complete clarity; inside this mysterious dark curtain, there was definitely a monster!
Since that other dark curtain harbored a monster, there was a high probability this one had one too.
The soldier didn’t reply immediately.
His thumb was pressed against the talk button of the walkie-talkie, his knuckles turning slightly white.
Soon, he pressed down, and a brief burst of static crackled from the device.
"No. 3, please respond if you copy."
The walkie-talkie remained silent for two seconds before an equally hushed voice came through, accompanied by the sizzling sound of static: "Copy."
"How are things on your end? Any anomalies found?" the soldier asked.
His gaze remained fixed on the expanding black tear up ahead.
There was another moment of silence from the walkie-talkie before the voice answered, "Nothing anomalous. There’s nothing inside—just pitch black, can’t see a thing. We’ve walked a bit of distance already and haven’t found anything."
After a pause, the voice added, "It’s pretty much the same as our previous reconnaissance."
Hearing this, the soldier didn’t respond right away.
His expression didn’t change in the slightest. His finger loosened slightly on the walkie-talkie, then tightened again.
After a moment of silence, the soldier spoke up: "Are you sure there’s nothing inside?"
The voice answered once more: "Yes, confirmed. Nothing at all."
No dead objects, no living creatures—it was terrifyingly eerie.
"We’re continuing deeper inside. Will report if anything new pops up."
After the other party finished speaking, the line cut off.
Frowning, the soldier stared at the fissure for a moment before turning his eyes to Suzy and Mark.
"There’s nothing inside."
Naturally, he trusted his teammates’ reconnaissance skills, but Suzy and Mark’s expressions didn’t look fake either.
Mark said softly, "The person who went in back then also said there was nothing inside."
"He said the same thing?" The soldier’s frown deepened.
"Yeah," Suzy chimed in. "The monster didn’t appear until he was about to come out."
"If there’s a monster inside, why didn’t it just kill him while he was in there?" the soldier pressed.
Suzy shook her head innocently. "Don’t ask me, I don’t know either."
It’s not like she was the monster.
Mark, however, remarked, "Perhaps there are some restrictions."
Both of them turned to look at him simultaneously. "What kind of restrictions?"
"I’m just guessing."
The soldier remained silent for a moment before pressing his walkie-talkie again.
"No. 3, please copy."
"Copy."
"There are two people out here who have seen the dark curtain before. They claim there are monsters inside. Stay sharp."
"Monsters... Understood, copy."
All three of them clearly heard that slightly surprised tone on the word "monsters" at first.
The call cut off once again.
The good news was that the soldiers who entered the dark curtain hadn’t met with any harm yet.
Suzy looked at the soldier again and asked, "Besides here, have dark curtains appeared in other places as well?"
"Yeah," the soldier replied without hiding anything. "Haven’t you two seen one already?"
Since Suzy and Mark had already encountered one, there was naturally no need to keep it secret.
Suzy nodded and asked again, "Have dark curtains appeared worldwide?"
"That I wouldn’t know," the soldier said. "I only know that dark curtains have appeared nationwide."
Suzy’s eyes flickered. "How many dark curtains are there in total?"
"They haven’t fully tallied the numbers yet, so I’m not sure either," the soldier said.
Suzy didn’t push any further with questions; it was already quite rare for the soldier to share this much with her.
"It’s dangerous up front. You two shouldn’t stand here—head back," the soldier told them.
Suzy shook her head. "It should be fine if I just watch from here, right?"
The soldier shot her a quick glance and said nothing further.
When faced with such an eerie phenomenon, most people would stay as far away as possible, yet Suzy was practically begging to get closer.
"Fine, but I won’t look out for you," the soldier replied, reverting to his cold demeanor from before.
Suzy didn’t mind his tone. She and Mark kept their eyes fixed on the dark curtain as it continued to expand up ahead.
Waiting around was rather dull, and by now, daylight had fully broken.
