Chapter 418: Chapter 418
Mark nodded. "According to her, that seems to be the case."
Suzy’s expression instantly grew heavy. "Do you think... it’s the same in other places? That these barriers will keep appearing every once in a while? We just don’t know if there are monsters inside..."
"There are," Mark said with absolute certainty.
"Why are you so sure?" Suzy asked.
Mark replied, "She said that every time the black mist appears, people get injured—and those injured are the elite forces of the base."
Either the monsters inside the black mist were unimaginably powerful, or new monsters would keep spawning even if the previous ones were killed.
Mark leaned toward the latter.
It wasn’t as if they hadn’t faced those monsters before; their weak spot was the head, and they weren’t terrifyingly invincible.
Still, that was merely his speculation; perhaps the monsters near this base really were absurdly strong.
Suzy remained silent for a moment before speaking softly, "How much longer do you think this base will stay safe?"
Mark shook his head. "I don’t know."
A brief silence fell between them.
Suzy processed the information she had gathered from Mark, then looked down at the map laid out before her. Using a red pen, she marked a point in the West Zone on the map and wrote two words next to it: Black Mist.
"When do you plan to leave?" Mark asked. "Have you found your friend?"
He hadn’t forgotten that the reason Suzy came to P City Base in the first place was to find her friend. Yet ever since they entered the base, he hadn’t heard her bring up her friend even once.
"It might take a bit longer," Suzy said. "My friend ran into some trouble."
"What kind of trouble?" Mark asked. "Do you need help?"
"Not for now," Suzy said. "It should be resolved soon."
Since she put it that way, Mark didn’t pry any further.
He glanced at the clock inside the RV and said to her, "It’s getting late. We should rest."
Suzy nodded and put away the map. It truly was getting late, and time to call it a night.
She still had things to do tomorrow.
Tucking the map into a drawer, she looked over at Mark, who was already sitting on his bed. On a whim, she said, "I didn’t expect her to tell you all these things."
Mark froze, taking a long moment to realize that Suzy was talking about Fiona.
"I was the one who asked," Mark answered honestly.
"She didn’t come looking for you just to talk about this, did she? Did you two know each other before?" Suzy asked again.
"No," Mark replied.
Suzy shot him a glance, then sat down on her bed and pulled the curtain shut. "Then why did she come looking for you in the first place?"
Mark paused briefly before answering, "She said she wanted to be friends with me."
For some inexplicable reason, Suzy let out a faint laugh.
"I never realized you were so popular before," Suzy remarked with a hint of humor.
First Rina, now Fiona—Mark’s face really was quite the attention-magnet. It was a good thing he had mostly stayed inside watching the RV over the past two days since arriving at the base; if he were to go out for a stroll, who knew what chaos would ensue?
"It’s alright," Mark said. He didn’t feel much about it, as he had long grown accustomed to it.
Suzy didn’t pursue the topic any further and lay down on her bed.
Even inside the RV, she could still hear muffled sounds drifting from afar, though much quieter than outside.
Maybe I can ask Jenny about it tomorrow—that girl is always the most well-informed, Suzy thought.
Before long, she drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Suzy woke up very early.
After a quick breakfast, Jenny came over, faint dark circles under her eyes, looking clearly sleep-deprived.
"Why are you rocking panda eyes?" Suzy teased with a smile.
Jenny wore a pitiful expression. "Didn’t sleep well last night."
Sitting on a folding chair, Suzy gestured for Jenny to come over and sit. There were still barely any people around their area, making it a convenient spot to talk.
Jenny walked over briskly, pulled out an empty chair, and sat right down.
"You’re a bit later than yesterday," Suzy noted.
Jenny let out a yawn. "Don’t even get me started. I almost couldn’t wake up! It was so noisy outside in the middle of the night—did you guys hear anything over here?"
"We heard it. Do you know what happened?"
As Suzy asked, she pulled out a bottle of mineral water and two packs of bread from a small box nearby, sliding them in front of Jenny.
Jenny stared wide-eyed at the sight, almost thinking she was dreaming.
Holy crap, Suzy is way too generous!
Just for sitting down, she got water and bread—if she worked for the base, she’d have to labor an entire day for this kind of payoff!
This woman is a total tycoon, Jenny marveled in her heart.
"You haven’t had breakfast yet, right?" Suzy asked with a beaming smile.
Jenny’s eyes were fixed on the two packs of stuffed bread in front of her. "Y-Yeah, haven’t eaten yet."
"Then eat while we talk. What happened last night?" Suzy chuckled.
Jenny suddenly realized this was a bribe.
She didn’t stand on ceremony, unscrewing the mineral water first and taking a huge gulp, letting out a satisfied breath. Her lingering sleepiness vanished instantly.
She then tore open the bread wrapper and took a massive bite, speaking with her mouth full: "Yesterday, I don’t know what got into the base, but they suddenly mobilized a massive group of soldiers."
"Do you know where they went?" Suzy pressed.
Jenny swallowed her bite, almost choking in the process, and quickly downed another big gulp of water to wash it down. "I asked around this morning. It seems something happened in the West Zone of the base—around the outer perimeter—which was why they called an emergency assembly."
The West Zone.
It was just as Fiona had guessed: something had indeed broken out over in the West Zone.
